Egg producer Cal-Maine swings to profit as demand and prices rise during pandemic
- Cal-Maine Foods Inc. said Monday it had net income of $60.5 million, or $1.24 a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter to May 30, after a loss of $19.8 million, or 41 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales rose to $453.3 million from $280.6 million. The FactSet consensus was for EPS of $1.20 and sales of $454.0 million. "After three fiscal quarters characterized by an oversupply of eggs and depressed market prices, demand for eggs increased and market prices rose 62.4 percent during our fourth fiscal quarter over the average price for the first three quarters, as consumers purchased more eggs for preparing meals at home in response to the COVID-19 pandemic," Chief Executive Dolph Baker said in a statement. The demand trend coincided with the Easter season, a peak for egg sales. The supply of eggs has continud to trend downward through the quarter, he said, as hen numbers fell by 13.9 million to 319.8 million, according to USDA numbers. Specialty egg sales came to $133.3 million to account for 29.9% of egg sales revenue, compared with 119.9 million, or 44.1 percent of egg sales revenue, in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2019. "Current supplies of corn and soybeans are favorable, and we believe we will continue to have an adequate supply of both grains in fiscal 2021," said Baker. "However, current ongoing uncertainties and supply chain disruptions related to the COVID-19 outbreak, weather fluctuations and geopolitical issues surrounding trade agreements and international tariffs may lead to further price volatility." The company will not pay a dividend this quarter. Shares fell 2.3% premarket, but are up 3.4% in the year to date, while the S&P 500 has fallen 0.2%.

Cal-Maine Foods Beats Quarterly Estimates, Sees More Price Volatility
- Cal-Maine Foods Inc. (CALM) beat estimates for quarterly earnings on Monday as the coronavirus outbreak boosts demand for the U.S. producer’s eggs.Looking ahead, the producer and distributor of fresh eggs sees more price volatility this year as egg prices soared to record levels since the end of the third quarter and as the COVID-19 pandemic creates more uncertainty regarding future disruptions.Cal-Maine Foods said net income dropped to $13.7 million, or 28 cents a share, in the quarter to Feb. 29, from $39.8 million, or 82 cents a share, in the year-earlier period amid more challenging market conditions. Sales fell 10% to $345.6 million due to lower average egg prices. (See Cal-Maine Foods earnings on TipRanks)“An unfavorable balance of egg supply and demand continued to adversely affect market prices,” said Dolph Baker, chairman and CEO of Cal-Maine Foods. “Ongoing uncertainties and supply chain disruptions related to the COVID-19 outbreak and geopolitical issues surrounding trade agreements and international tariffs could create more price volatility in the future.”Ben Bienvenu, four-star Wall Street analyst at Stephens, this month raised the company’s stock to Buy from Hold. Bienvenu’s $47 price target suggests 15% upside potential for the shares in the coming 12 months. (See Cal-Maine Foods stock analysis on TipRanks)Cal-Maine Foods said that its businesses and facilities are operating “normally” during the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and that is has not experienced any supply chain or delivery disruptions.Related News: Zoom Stock Zoomed Too High, Too Fast, Thinks Goldman Sachs JPMorgan: These 3 Stocks Are Poised to Surge by at Least 35% 3 Under-The-Radar Dividend Stocks With Over 8% Dividend Yield More recent articles from Smarter Analyst: * 3 Penny Stocks With Triple-Digit Upside Potential * Goldman Sachs: 3 “Strong Buy” Stocks to Snap Up Now * British American Tobacco to Raise $2.4 Billion From Debt Offering * Imperial Brands Sees No Coronavirus Impact, Secures New Loan

PAEK materials being optimized for laser sintering
- The University of Exeter, in collaboration with Victrex, has completed commissioning of an EOS P 810 laser sintering platform for high temperature polymers. The strategic arrangement aims to introduce next-generation Victrex PAEK polymers and composites while improving the performance of the underlying AM (additive manufacturing) processes. Investment in the new state-of-the-art equipment, and its commissioning, are expected to accelerate the commercialization of AM materials for high performance parts. High-temperature PAEK polymers can be printed on the EOS P 810 laser sintering platform. Image courtesy of Victrex . The Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) at Exeter is one of the first to commission the recently launched equipment. “We can now further our research by utilizing the next generation of high temperature systems, the EOS P 810,” explains Professor Oana Ghita, the lead of CALM at the University of Exeter. “The new equipment allows us to link the fundamental research with the commercial manufacturing process, to optimize the materials and their application, while accounting for the new thermal, optical, and mechanical upgrades and providing us with accurate insights into the detailed dynamics of laser sintering.” The new EOS P 810 is capable of printing with materials that have melting temperatures around 300°C (572°F) and particularly suitable for the new low-melting-point PAEK polymers, designed and optimized by Victrex specifically for AM.
