Policy support remains uncertain, but potential positive developments in tariff negotiations and growth rates could fuel a market recovery.

Buy, Buy, Bad Week. Time To Get Greedy
- This week has been one of the most intense of my career, with daily political headlines and market records being broken. I invested more than half my cash, expanding positions. While the market experienced extreme volatility, the recent 90-day tariff pause and lower inflation offer some relief. The drop in long-term yields could also provide more stability for the market. Although I'm not convinced we'll reach all-time highs anytime soon, I remain focused on quality dividend/value stocks, as strategic, long-term investing in this environment can offer great opportunities.

Chaos Breeds Bargains! Here's What I'm Buying
- My portfolio took a major hit on April 3 and 4, with losses surpassing previous records. Yet, despite the pain, I remain optimistic. Market corrections are essential for long-term wealth building. Though short-term declines are difficult, I view them as opportunities to improve my risk/reward and income potential. I'm eyeing undervalued opportunities, especially cyclical stocks. The current market weakness, amplified by tariffs, offers great buying potential for stocks like Union Pacific and Prologis, and many others.

Live Markets: GOOGL, AMD, AMZN Weigh on Nasdaq
- Today’s trading reveals technology investors see the glass half empty at the moment. A tech malaise fueled by Google parent Alphabet (Nasdaq: GOOGL) and chipmaker AMD (Nasdaq: AMD) is pressuring the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 moderately lower while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is eking out a gain. The tech malaise can be blamed on Alphabet’s steep 8% drop, owing to a revenue shortfall coupled on top of an aggressive AI spending plan that didn’t sit well with Wall Street. Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) shares are down in sympathy ahead of the company’s earnings report after the closing bell tomorrow. Old Dominion Footprint Expands; 9 Terminals Added So Far In 2020
- Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ: ODFL) has already opened nine new less-than-truckload (LTL) terminals so far in 2019, it announced Monday. The Thomasville, North Carolina-based carrier's network of service centers now stands at 238.The facilities have been added in new and existing markets in efforts to expand capacity and improve shipping times."Even during an unprecedented time, we will continue to invest in our network and look for additional ways to improve our operations. Our goal is to build capacity to win market share, while shortening response time and transit times. Our investments align with our long-term strategic plan of investing in our business," Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning Chip Overbey said in a news release. The company reiterated its 2020 capital outlay of $195 million for real estate and expansion projects in its second-quarter earnings release last week. On its second-quarter earnings call, management noted several opportunities to increase its market share. They said that some of the freight the carrier had lost to lower prices early in the quarter was coming back to their network as shippers appear more willing to pay a premium for service.Old Dominion originally expected terminal projects to total $245 million at the beginning of the year before COVID-19 cast uncertainty on freight markets. On the call, management said revenue per day was down 19.3% year-over-year in April, the peak of the COVID downturn, but improved as the quarter progressed. The year-over-year revenue decline was 11.4% in June, with July only seeing a 3% dip as manufacturers have resumed operations and supply chains restock depleted inventories. The new facilities, representing nearly 500 doors, are located in Montana, Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Georgia, New York and two in Illinois. The bulk of the new door space is incremental, and the facilities have been constructed with the ability to expand in the future."Our customers are having to adapt to these rapidly changing times. Our newest service centers are integral to Old Dominion Freight Line's operations, accommodating unique customer needs and shipping higher volumes of goods. We will continue to invest in long-term solutions to help our customers keep their promises," concluded Overbey.Click for more FreightWaves articles by Todd Maiden. * Forward Air to expand pursuit of traditional less-than-truckload market * Intermodal growth here to stay, says Hub Group * Schneider eyes deployment of growing cash balanceSee more from Benzinga * Canadian Railways Expect Steady Grain Carload Volumes In 2020-2021 * Funding Go-Ahead For Mississippi River Deepening Seen As Boon For Exports * Isaias Disrupting East Coast Markets – FreightWaves NOW(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. The steady growth solidifies the company’s strong presence across the United States, bringing total nationwide service center count to 238. The less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier’s new facilities include, Butte, Mont., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Conroe, Texas, Jonesboro, Ark., Lafayette, Ind., LaGrange, Ga., Rochester, N.Y, Rock Island, Ill. and University Park, Ill.The nine new and renovated service centers are strategically placed for operational efficiency and designed with innovative technology. Our investments align with our long-term strategic plan of investing in our business.”Old Dominion selects new locations with the intent of better serving customers. Each service center is built with future growth in mind, including room to increase door-count, potential to hire additional employees, and equipped to leverage the latest technology. The new facilities allow the company to operate with a high standard of excellence and a commitment to employee growth, who are the backbone of each operation.“Our customers are having to adapt to these rapidly changing times. Our newest service centers are integral to Old Dominion Freight Line’s operations, accommodating unique customer needs and shipping higher volumes of goods. We will continue to invest in long-term solutions to help our customers keep their promises,” said Overbey.Old Dominion’s service center openings include: * Butte, Mont. – Butte is strategically located near two major highways, I-90 and I-15, and in close proximity to two class I railroads, the Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad. In addition, the port of Montana provides a variety of services. This 20.25-acre and 42-door service center is a critical gateway to improve deliveries to Canada's international border. As one of six service centers in Montana, this location allows Old Dominion to improve service offerings, shipping times, and better serve customers. * Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Located on nine acres, the Cedar Rapids service center operates with 44 doors and room to increase by up to 20 doors in the future. The facility will service the surrounding communities, including Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Iowa City, Mt. Pleasant, Manchester, and Dyersville, where “Field of Dreams” from the 1989 movie is located. * Conroe, Texas – As the Houston metro area continues to see sustained growth, Old Dominion adds an additional service center to the market. This facility has 63 doors on nearly 25 acres and is equipped to expand by up to 100 more doors if needed. The Conroe service center currently has 27 employees. * Jonesboro, Ark. – Just three miles from its previous location, the new Jonesboro service center is one of the largest LTL facilities in Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel. The new facility is sixty-four percent larger than the previous location, sitting on 14.67 acres of land, with 44 doors and the potential to add over 30 more doors. As one of four Old Dominion service centers in Arkansas, the Company has proudly served this community for over 12 years. * Lafayette, Ind. – Old Dominion opened the Lafayette service center to accommodate the region’s recent growth. The new facility sits on 23.1 acres with 42 doors and space to double the door count in the future. As the sixth service center in Indiana, the Lafayette location will increase capacity in the area and help OD to provide faster response and service times. The service center immediately created eight new jobs. * LaGrange, Ga. – Located near the Georgia and Alabama border, the move to the new 63-door service center sits in a prime location by two major interstates, I-85 and I-185, and near major retail distribution centers and industrial manufacturers. The LaGrange location is one of ten service centers in the Peach State. * Rochester, N.Y. – Old Dominion returns to the Rochester area after moving operations to a nearby community in the early 2000s. This service center brought 17 new jobs to the community. The remodeled facility has 28 doors and sits in a central location to offer closer proximity to customers. The Rochester location plays a critical role in delivering shipments to and from Canada. * Rock Island, Ill. – The Rock Island service center serves major markets like Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Des Moines, Kansas City, St. Louis, Omaha and Indianapolis. Located only a few minutes from the second-longest interstate in the country, I-80, the 77-door facility was built on 24 acres. Over the last five years, the economic strength in the Quad-Cities region increased by 5.2 percent. * University Park, Ill. – Out of all of the new service centers this year, the University Park facility has the highest door count with 86 doors. It is strategically placed to provide easy access to the state's major interstates, I-57, I-355, I-80, I-294, and I-94. A high door count and ideal location allows the Company to reduce stem time to the customers and adds more capacity. The new facility moves a variety of essential products like food, cleaning supplies, tires, over-length items and more. This service center also has a unique feature where the dock has trailer bumpers, which helps keep the elements out of the dock. The newest service centers are examples of Old Dominion’s investment and commitment to its customers as the Company continues to enter new markets, operate with efficiency to meet high standards and further solidify OD’s promise of transporting shipments on-time and in-full.For more information about Old Dominion, visit www.odfl.com or call (800) 432-6335. Old Dominion Makes Its Favored LTL Benchmark Clear: Revenue Per Shipment
- With numerous metrics to determine how a less-than-truckload (LTL) company is doing, the CFO at Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NYSE: ODFL) talked this week about the measurement that his company likes to look at: revenue per shipment. In a conference call with earnings analysts following the release of the company's strong second-quarter earnings report, ODFL CFO Adam Satterfield said that metric is one that the company favors as a barometer of the strength of the business. "We believe revenue per shipment is a better measurement, as we focus internally on maintaining a positive spread between our revenue and cost per shipment," Satterfield said.Focusing on that spread is vital, Satterfield said. "Managing those two factors [revenue and cost per shipment] has really been a key contributor to our long-term ratio improvement," he said. Old Dominion's operating ratio was 10 basis points improved in the quarter. It's a small amount, but it stands in sharp contrast to XPO, where the OR in its LTL division shot up about 10 percentage points, depending on the measuring stick. While some of ODFL's metrics were down in the challenging second quarter, revenue per shipment was up. Old Dominion's revenue per shipment excluding fuel was $321.47, up from $306.37, a gain of 4.9%. Satterfield said that rate of increase was "relatively consistent with the change in the first quarter of 2020, as well as our long-term trends." The gain in revenue per shipment stood in contrast to some other key LTL metrics that declined (yet the company's OR improved regardless). Old Dominion's revenue per hundredweight, another key metric, was down to $21.85 from $22.72.But Satterfield noted that revenue per hundredweight has some flaws. According to a transcript of the earnings call supplied by SeekingAlpha, Satterfield said that metric is subject to "multiple factors" that can have a "significant impact" on its calculation. He specified average length of haul and weight per shipment as two of those factors. The relationship between changes in revenue per hundredweight and changes in Old Dominion's mix of freight are not "linear," Satterfield said. "As a result, revenue per hundredweight is a tough measure to evaluate, when the mix of our business changes so significantly like it did during the second quarter," he said.Weight per shipment was volatile during the second quarter for Old Dominion, one of the reasons why Satterfield suggested revenue per hundredweight was a less-than-stellar barometer. Satterfield said Old Dominion's weight per shipment was about 1,600 pounds in January and February and then climbed to 1,677 pounds in April. It worked its way back toward 1,600 pounds in June. View more earnings on ODFLWeight per shipment, depending on the mix, is a double-edged sword for LTL carriers. Depending on what is driving the gains, higher is not necessarily better. Satterfield said one of the reasons it reached the 1,670-pound level is that in the early days of the pandemic, national accounts continued to be consistent users of Old Dominion's services but some smaller accounts did not. Some of those smaller accounts are returning to the fold, Satterfield said, bringing the number back to 1,600. That bigger is not always better was evident in this answer from Satterfield to an analyst's question: "We're happy to see it kind of coming back to the 1,600-pound range. If we can see that stay around that sort of level for the time being, that would be a good trend and contributor too to the overall revenue per shipment that we're seeing."Price negotiations are more positive than revenue per hundredweight indicatesSatterfield, noting that drop in revenue per hundredweight, said that could be construed as a sign of a weakening market. But the CFO said that is not the case. "While the change in revenue per hundredweight might suggest otherwise, we continue to negotiate rate increases during the second quarter and believe underlying pricing trends remained relatively consistent," he said. Satterfield, in response to an analyst's question, said Old Dominion did lose some business earlier in the year as it stuck to the line on pricing. "In the early part of this quarter, that may have impacted some of our volumes as well," he said. "But ... we are starting to see some volumes coming back to us. That's been an encouraging trend."CEO Greg Gantt echoed Satterfield, noting the return of some lost business. "We did see customers more likely to put out bids and rebid the freight, and that was definitely a challenge for us," Gantt said. But he added that Old Dominion did gain some business from competitors, "and fortunately, we are gaining back some revenue that we lost earlier, because they couldn't meet the service standards they had with us."On a separate issue, Gantt said Old Dominion has "somewhat of an appetite for an acquisition. I just don't know who that is or exactly what that is." He added that ODFL is "not looking at anything currently."More articles by John KingstonRyder sees weak market for used vehicles lingering, and it has a glut of themU.S. Xpress has strong second quarterDrilling Deep: The LTL model adapts to the COVID-19 worldSee more from Benzinga * Old Dominion Held The Line On Costs, Has Slight Uptick In OR Even As Volume Dropped * Geofencing Data: Less-Than-Truckload Boost Carries Into June * Trying To Make Sense Of The YRC Bailout(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Old Dominion Held The Line On Costs, Has Slight Uptick In OR Even As Volume Dropped
- Less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ: ODFL) turned in a second quarter that saw it actually improve its operating ratio (OR), though several metrics on the volume side of the ledger were down.Total revenue for the company was down 15.5% to $896.2 million from $1.06 billion, a drop of 15.5%. The LTL services revenue line of $884.0 million made up the bulk of that, down 15.6% from the year-ago period.Operating income fell at a pace roughly in line with the decline in revenue. Operating income was down 15.1% to $199.1 million, down from $234.4 million. But the company's OR ticked up 10 basis points to 77.8% from 77.9%. Where Old Dominion saw big changes was in its costs. Operating expenses for salaries, wages and benefits dropped to $460.9 million from $532.5 million, a decrease of 11.7%. Since such expenses are generally viewed as "sticky," that sort of decline against a revenue drop of 15.5% is a significant accomplishment. The numbers on average full-time employees tell the story – there were 17,911 employees in the second quarter of 2020 and 20,735 in the second quarter of 2019. The transportation analysis team at Deutsche Bank was impressed. In a quick analysis of the earnings put out soon after the Old Dominion numbers were released, the team led by Amit Mehrotra wrote that ODFL "exhibited very strong cost performance in a very difficult top-line environment," the Deutsche Bank report said. The overall cost decline was 15.6% against a drop in revenues of 15.5%, allowing for the slight improvement in OR. View more earnings on ODFLThe Deutsche report noted that the cost line of "operating supplies and expenses" was just 8.4% of sales, which the report said is likely the smallest in company history. Operating supplies and expenses plummeted to $75.4 million from $122.4 million, a drop of a whopping 38%."Clearly ODFL took a hard line on discretionary costs in the quarter, which together with best-in-class management of the other aspects of its cost structure, equated to a nice bottom-line beat," Deutsche wrote.More articles by John KingstonRyder sees weak market for used vehicles lingering and it has a lot of themUS Xpress has strong second quarterNew Jersey court ruling victory for employers seeking to compel arbitrationSee more from Benzinga * Geofencing Data: Less-Than-Truckload Boost Carries Into June * Trying To Make Sense Of The YRC Bailout * April The Bottom For Less-Than-Truckload?(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Geofencing Data: Less-Than-Truckload Boost Carries Into June
- Less-than-truckload (LTL) volumes continued to improve throughout May and into the first week of June, said Deutsche Bank (NYSE: DB) analyst Amit Mehrotra in a note to clients. He reported that in the first week of June, LTL activity levels improved 7% versus the average levels seen in May and were up 8% compared to the last week of May. Mehrotra believes that Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ: ODFL) and SAIA (NASDAQ: SAIA) outperformed the average increase and United Parcel Service, Inc. (NYSE: UPS) and YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW) underperformed. The investment firm has mapped approximately 1,000 LTL service sites, providing it with a high-frequency geolocation dataset for the LTL industry. The geofencing data covers all regions for major public and private LTL carriers, including all of Old Dominion's more than 200 facilities. The week-by-week analysis evaluates shipment trends for both regional and national carriers. The note said that the firm hasn't mapped XPO Logistics (NYSE: XPO) facilities yet.The regional data showed "sharp inflections." The Midwest saw activity improve 19% and the Northeast climbed 28% in the first week of June compared to the last week of May. The data shows that activity "stabilized at lower levels" in the Southwest. Chart: dbDIG Primary ResearchThe PMI, a survey of manufacturing supply executives, jumped 9.5 percentage points in June to a level of 52.6%. A reading above 50% implies expansion in the U.S. manufacturing sector. This was the second consecutive monthly improvement in the survey. The New Orders Index increased 24.6 percentage points from May to 56.4%, with the Production Index climbing 24.1 percentage points to 57.3%.Manufactured goods can represent nearly 85% of total tonnage for some LTL carriers. The early June data is a continuation of a meaningful recovery from the COVID-19-induced lows seen in April. Many LTL carriers highlighted improving tonnage and revenue trends from April to May in their midquarter reports.ArcBest Corp. (NASDAQ: ARCB) and Old Dominion reported year-over-year revenue declines of around 20% in April and in the mid- to high teens in May. SAIA reported a 12.9% year-over-year decline in April tonnage, with May tonnage down only 8.8%. SAIA doesn't provide midquarter yield metrics."Our observations are positive for our overall bullish stance on LTL industry and pricing dynamics, with our top picks remaining XPO and SAIA, and only valuation keeping us on the sidelines with respect to ODFL," concluded Mehrotra.Click for more FreightWaves articles by Todd Maiden. * Trying to make sense of the YRC bailout * YRC gives government 30% stake in its latest financial bailout * million financing keeps Workhorse's share surge hummingSee more from Benzinga * Current Volume Level Is Likely Unsustainable, But Just How High Can We Expect Throughput To Be Post-Fourth? * Pandemic Prompts DHL To Beef Up Expedited LCL Services * Fourth of July, 2020: U.S. Fireworks Industry Annual Revenue(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. April The Bottom For Less-Than-Truckload?
- Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ: ODFL) reported a 16.2% year-over-year decline in revenue per day during May as tonnage declined 12.1% and revenue per hundredweight, or yield, moved lower. The less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier reported the May tonnage decline was the combination of a 16.7% decline in shipments, partially offset by a 5.4% increase in weight per shipment. So far through the second quarter of 2020, revenue per hundredweight is down 4.7% year-over-year, 1.4% lower excluding fuel surcharges, compared to the same period in 2019.The May declines are less severe than the 19.3% year-over-year decline in revenue per day during April, which was the result of a 15.3% decline in tonnage (shipments down 22% with weight per shipment 8.5% higher) and a 4.8% decline in revenue per hundredweight, down 2% excluding fuel."Old Dominion's revenue results for May reflect the significant decline in the domestic economy as well as a decrease in fuel surcharge revenue. While economic uncertainty continues, we are encouraged by the gradual improvement in our daily revenue trend throughout the month of May," said President and CEO Greg Gantt. The year-over-year revenue decline is partly due to the precipitous drop in diesel fuel prices, which has resulted in lower fuel surcharge revenue for the carrier. Average diesel prices have moved more than 20% lower in the quarter compared to the same period of 2019. However, the spread between wholesale and retail diesel prices has widened in the second quarter, which presents a tailwind for earnings.Chart: SONAR: DOE.USAGantt's reference to improvement in revenue trends as May progressed was noted by Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE: DB) analyst Amit Mehrotra on a conference call with clients on June 1. The investment firm has been monitoring activity levels at Old Dominion's more than 200 terminal locations using geofencing technology. Mehrotra said the data showed activity around the carrier's facilities improved 21% from the first week of May to the last.Johns Creek, Georgia-based LTL carrier Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) provided a mid-quarter update on Wednesday, June 3, as well. The carrier reported a 16.2% year-over-year decline in shipments during April as tonnage dropped 12.9%, partially offset by a 4% increase in weight per shipment. May's results were better with shipments down 9.2% and tonnage off 8.8% compared to May 2019.During Mehrotra's conference call, he said the Old Dominion data, which showed activity improving 15% from April to May in the Northeast, would bode well for Saia's May results. Saia has significantly added terminal capacity in the region over the last three years. In a note out to client's today, Mehrotra said, "To be sure, June will be more telling, but we remain optimistic that LTL volumes (and freight volumes more broadly) bottomed in April and will see a steady improvement, which has positive implications for transportation equities and valuation. In this context we're encouraged by both ODFL and SAIA's update today."Shares of ODFL are up less than 1% in early trading with shares of SAIA moving nearly 3% higher. ArcBest Corp's (NASDAQ: ARCB) shares are up nearly 8% on a rating upgrade from Bank of America Corp (NYSE: BAC).See more from Benzinga * Drayage update: The Future Of EDI (With Video) * APL England Master Charged Following Loss Of Containers * Truckers On Edge As Civil Unrest Rages In Major U.S. Cities(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Old Dominion Freight Line Provides Update for Second-Quarter 2020
- Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (Nasdaq: ODFL) today reported certain less-than-truckload ("LTL") operating metrics for May 2020. Revenue per day decreased 16.2% as compared to May 2019 due to a 12.1% decrease in LTL tons per day and a decrease in LTL revenue per hundredweight. The change in LTL tons per day was attributable to a 16.7% decrease in LTL shipments per day that was partially offset by a 5.4% increase in LTL weight per shipment. For the quarter-to-date period, LTL revenue per hundredweight and LTL revenue per hundredweight excluding fuel surcharges decreased 4.7% and 1.4%, respectively, as compared to the same period last year.

A Tale Of Two Cities And How They're Welcoming Trucking Facilities
- Trucking facilities tend to leave a sizable footprint in the communities where they operate. Their construction and expansion can become a flashpoint and set off local political battles.Love's Travel Stops is facing some of that opposition in its attempt to build a truck stop in Glendale, Arizona, on what had been farmland. More than halfway across the country, Old Dominion Freight is trying to build a new terminal in Youngstown, Ohio, where it already has one. There, the company appears likely to receive tax breaks to support its efforts. The opponents don't always win. Consider the case about 18 months ago of a new Pilot J travel center in the Los Angeles region, with the prospect of almost 200 new parking spots. It ultimately was approved. In the case of Love's in Glendale, a spokesman for the city said, "Some neighbors in the area have raised concerns. The city has provided opportunities for them to voice concerns at council meetings, public hearings and a neighborhood meeting."In a news report about the dispute carried by KNXV, the local ABC affiliate in Phoenix, a resident named CJ Unzen said of those opposed to the Love's facility that the group is worried about potential crime, safety issues and diesel fumes. "We're not against the trucking industry, we're not against truckers and we're not even against truck stops," she said. "We just do not believe that this is the right location — we do not believe that they should be near any neighborhoods."The area where the former farmland is targeted for the travel center had been in an unincorporated section near Glendale. But it has since been annexed by the city. The story also said city planning staff had made a presentation on the project late last year, identifying the travel center as being in line with current uses in the area, which is near a major highway, Loop 303, which links Interstate 10 west of Phoenix with north-south Interstate 17. "City staff cited the growing number of warehouses and industrial buildings built or planned for the area near where the travel center would be built," the news report said. There is no other truck stop in Glendale. A spokesman for Love's in the story published by KNXV said if the Love's was built, it would be the 13th in the state for the chain. In response to an email from FreightWaves, a Love's spokeswoman said the company did not yet know how many parking spaces would be part of the project. The spokeswoman also confirmed comments in the KNXV story from Love's spokesman Chad Previch, who was quoted as saying that the city has worked with a traffic engineer on a study that is being reviewed by Glendale and the state. He also said Love's would take up 10-12 acres of the site.In Ohio, Old Dominion Freight Line wants to build a second terminal in Warren County in the northwest portion of that state. According to a story in the Tribune Chronicle, the LTL carrier is seeking a property tax break on the site, which would be built in Lordstown. The local newspaper said approval for the tax request "seems likely." It also said the tax break would result in a drop of about 60% in ODFL's tax bill over 10 years. Although the project is slated at $6 million, the size of the tax bill can't be known yet. But the Tribune Chronicleestimated it would be about $27,500 per year compared to the levy if there was no break offered. .Lordstown is the location of a shuttered GM plant that was bought late last year by Lordstown Motors, which has plans to build battery-powered pickup trucks at the site. GM, however, is planning on building a battery plant in Lordstown and the planned ODFL site is adjacent to that, according to the Tribune Chronicle.See more from Benzinga * Getting Crews On And Off Ships And Airplanes * US Rail Volumes Rise On A Week-To-Week Basis * E-commerce Drives Multi-Pronged Expansion At UPS Airlines(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Old Dominion Posts Highest 1Q OR Despite Drop In Revenue
- Even as business began to slide in the second half of March, and most measurements of volume were down for the three months, Old Dominion Freight Lines (NASDAQ: ODFL) posted a first quarter in which it reached a record operating ratio (OR) for that calendar period. The first quarter's OR was 81.4%, a 60 basis point improvement over 2019's 82%. This occurred even as several barometers of volumes all pointed lower: intercity miles (down 2.3%); total tons (down 2.4%); tonnage per day (down 3.9%); shipments (down 3.6%); and shipments per day (down 5.1%).But revenue barometers were all higher. Revenue per intercity mile was up 2.5%. Other indicators: revenue per hundredweight, up 2.6%; same statistic, excluding fuel, up 3.3%; revenue per shipment, up 3.9%; same statistic, excluding fuel, up 4.6%. In a prepared statement accompanying the earning release, President and CEO Greg C. Gantt said demand for ODFL services "declined in the last half of March, however, due to the widespread effects of the COVID‑19 pandemic on the domestic economy."Wall Street liked the earnings. At approximately 10:45 a.m., ODFL stock was up 7.48%, a gain of $9.59 to $137.84.Weight per shipment was up 1.3% for the quarter but looked to be rising as the quarter ended and rolled into April. "We experienced a significant increase in our average weight per shipment and this trend has also continued into April," Gantt said. "While this helped offset the decline in shipments per day, an increase in average weight per shipment generally has the effect of reducing revenue per hundredweight," he said. View more earnings on ODFLRevenue per hundredweight is known as a less-than-truckload (LTL) company's yield. For the quarter, it was $22.68, up 2.6% from $22.10. But in an interim report published in early March, ODFL said yield through that point in the quarter was up 4.3%. In turn, yield is impacted by weight per shipment, which was up 1.3%. The interim report had it down 1.5%. In a report after the earnings release, the transportation analysis team at Deutsche Bank led by Amit Mehrotra noted that in its release, ODFL indicated its approach toward pricing was stable. The trend then in yield, Deutsche wrote, "(indicates) this was more mix-driven rather than indicative of deteriorating pricing dynamics."The Deutsche Bank team also wrote, "The company was very clear in the release that decelerating yield is not a reflection of pricing but rather higher weight per shipment (i.e. higher weight = less $ per hundredweight but it is positive for mix/margin)...which we take as a positive indication of industry pricing trends."The improved barometers in revenue per hundredweight and shipment even in the face of declining revenue led the company overall to post net income of $133.1 million for the quarter, down just about $150,000 from the first quarter of 2019. Operating income rose to $183.1 million from $178.4 million. Revenue declined to $987.36 million from $990.78 million in the first quarter of 2019. On the company's earnings call, one analyst said she believed it was the first sequential decline in revenue for ODFL in 20 years. Salaries, wages and benefits rose to $524.4 million, up slightly from $522.3 million. But in a period in which complaints of rising insurance costs are prevalent in every sector of the trucking industry, Old Dominion's "insurance & claims" expense line actually fell to $9.85 million from $11.17 million in the corresponding quarter of 2019.Other notable statistics in the earnings report: * The Deutsche team said the report was better than expectations. "Relative to our expectations...revenue was $13M better while expenses were exactly in line, translating into a $13M/7% underlying EBIT beat." * ODFL's cash stockpile dropped to $356.97 million from $403.57 million. Its long-term debt is $45 million, up from essentially zero at the end of last year. * Its capital expenditures for the quarter were $52.2 million. That includes a drop in real estate spending of about $50 million in the first quarter, "as certain projects will be deferred to a future period due to the current trend for shipments." Capital expenditures in 2020 are expected to be $265 million. * The net income figures do not reflect a $10.1 million bonus paid to drivers as part of a pandemic relief/reward announced in March.See more from Benzinga * YRC Receives Grace Period For Union Benefits Amid 'Sharp Decline' * Trucking Stocks Are Doing About As Miserable As The Broader Stock Market * Less-Than-Truckload Headwinds Continue, Old Dominion Sees Small Decline(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. If colleges cut sports programs, could new models emerge?
- College sports programs are already being cut and more are likely on the chopping block. The coronavirus pandemic has triggered fears of an economic meltdown on campuses around the country. The cancellation of the NCAA men's basketball tournament cost schools $375 million and more losses are expected, especially if football season is disrupted in the fall. In tough times, athletic administrators often drop sports programs to save money. In the past few weeks, Old Dominion said it will drop wrestling and Cincinnati will no longer have men's soccer. Warnings of tough times ahead have come from all over college athletics, even some of the wealthiest Power Five schools. “To say it’s not going to have any economic impact — that, I would say, would be grossly naïve," said Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, who oversees a program that had $148 million in operating revenue in 2017-18 and boasts of 20 straight years of balanced budgets. "We’re just hoping to minimize it,” he said. Paving the way for more cuts to come, the commissioners of five Bowl Subdivision conferences have asked the NCAA to waive over the next four years a slew of requirements for Division I membership, including the minimum number (16) of sports a school must sponsor. Some observers see the coming crisis as a chance for schools to consider radical changes to how athletic departments are run or for new development paths to emerge for young athletes. “Budgets reflect our values,” said Arne Duncan, a former U.S. education secretary and now co-chair of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. “I think we’ll see now whether in a time of cutbacks, what gets prioritized. Is it the interest of adults and unbelievably high salaries? Or is it the interest of student-athletes...

University of Cincinnati drops men's soccer in virus fallout
- CINCINNATI (AP) — The University of Cincinnati eliminated its men's soccer program Tuesday as other colleges weighed cutbacks because of budget problems resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. College are grappling with revenue losses from spring sports cancellations, including the NCAA basketball tournament. Eliminating sports is considered a last resort by athletic directors who face difficult choices. Earlier this month, Old Dominion eliminated wrestling as part of its response to the pandemic. Cincinnati athletic director John Cunningham expects other schools to face similar choices because of the uncertainty over fall sports, including football. “I've spoken to other athletic directors and everything is on the table at this point,” Cunningham said in a phone interview. “There will be different sorts of cuts and pullbacks that schools are going to make, and it's definitely possible that will include sports offered." Cincinnati began offering men's soccer in 1973. If the football season is affected by virus precautions, schools that rely on football will be forced to consider deeper cuts, Villanova athletic director Mark Jackson said Tuesday. “Our revenue center is in basketball — we’re not dependent on football,” Jackson said in a Zoom interview with reporters. “But the closer we move to fall, as you’ve read, and the more that football is impacted in a lot of different Division I programs, I think the decisions are going to become more drastic, I really do.” Schools have made cutbacks in athletic staffing and expenses. Eliminating a sport is at the bottom of the list of options, Cunningham said. “It's the last thing you want to do as an athletic director,” he said. Both Cincinnati and Old Dominion tried to lessen the impact on students...

Gaming machines get possible reprieve because of pandemic
- RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Unregulated betting machines in gas stations and bars have been granted a possible 11th hour reprieve in Virginia thanks to the coronavirus. And casino legalization in the Old Dominion has taken a big step forward. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam took action on several gambling-related pieces of legislation over the weekend, including a bill that would have banned so-called “gray machines," which have proliferated in restaurants, bars and convenience stores in recent years. The governor is now asking lawmakers to delay the ban, saying the impact of the coronavirus on the economy requires a new approach. Northam wants to tax the machines and use the revenue to fund a virus relief plan aimed at helping small businesses and improving social services for individuals. Northam's chief of staff Clark Mercer said banning the machines now would hurt the restaurants that rely on the extra revenue from the games and have been hit hard by mandated closures due to the coronavirus. “Clearly, our restaurants have been hurting," Mercer said. The machines are called gray machines because they operate in a gray area of the law. The games look and play like slot machines, though the manufacturers say there is an element of skill involved. Companies that make and distribute the machines spent heavily on campaign donations and lobbying to keep the machines legal in Virginia. “We appreciate the governor's leadership in this matter as he worked to address a revenue stream which greatly assists local small businesses and their employees,” said Mike Barley, a spokesman for Pace-O-Matic. Northam also took action on high-profile legislation to legalize casinos in five cities — Bristol, Danville, Richmond, Portsmouth and Norfolk. Virginia is one of only a handful of...

Mississippi State hires Nikki McCray-Penson as women's coach
- STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State hired former Old Dominion women’s basketball coach Nikki McCray-Penson to replace Vic Schaefer as the Bulldogs’ head coach. Athletic director John Cohen called McCray-Penson “a proven winner who will lead one of the best programs in the nation” on the department’s website. McCray-Penson, a former Tennessee star and Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer, said it’s been a dream to coach in the Southeastern Conference and she’s “grateful and blessed for this incredible honor and opportunity.” McCray-Penson was 53-40 the past three years at Old Dominion, her first head coaching job with the storied program following nine seasons as a South Carolina assistant under Dawn Staley. The Lady Monarchs posted consecutive 20-win seasons under McCray, including 24-6 overall and 14-4 in Conference USA last season, when she was conference coach of the year. McCray’s challenge in Starkville is keeping the powerhouse program in Southeastern Conference and national championship contention after Schaefer led the Bulldogs to consecutive runner-up appearances in 2017 and ’18. She owns an impressive pedigree as a college and pro player, coupled with her vast coaching resume and initial success at ODU. She helped Staley lead South Carolina to its first Women’s Final Four in 2015 and to the NCAA title in 2017. A two-time SEC Player of the Year at Tennessee under Hall of Famer Pat Summitt from 1991-95, McCray helped the U.S. Women win gold medals at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. She became a three-time WNBA All-Star in eight seasons. McCray also played two seasons in the ABL, winning the 1997 Most Valuable Player award while leading the Columbus Quest to the first of two championships. McCray was inducted into Women’s...

Morgan Stanley: 2 Stocks to Buy (and 1 to Stay Away From)
- The most recent quarter marked the worst first quarter on record for both the S&P; 500 and the Dow Jones. For investors in search of a bright spot, investing firm Morgan Stanley sees plenty of compelling opportunities being presented as a result of the market’s COVID-19-driven sell-off. Morgan Stanley's chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson stated, “We like these prices a lot.” He added, “We’ve been scaling back into stocks over the last two, three or four weeks...We think this is probably the best risk-reward we’ve seen for investors in two years.”Heeding Wilson’s advice, we used TipRanks’ database to take a closer look at stocks covered by Morgan Stanley’s analysts in the hope of finding some exciting plays to catch on recent weakness. It turns out that two of the firm’s recently upgraded picks have received significant support from other members of the Street, with the Buy-rated tickers also offering some impressive upside potential. That being said, one name stands out as being an investment to avoid, falling out of favor with Morgan Stanley as well as the broader analyst community. Let's take a closer look.Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL)Back in 1934, Old Dominion Freight Line opened up shop with only one truck running a 94-mile route in Virginia. Now, the company is one of the top LTL trucking players. Unlike the broader market, the last month has gone easy on this stock, with it down by only 1.6%, and Morgan Stanley is betting that substantial growth is on the horizon.According to analyst Ravi Shanker, who covers the ticker for the firm, even though COVID-19 might make fundamentals worse before they get better, the risk/reward profile for the industry as a whole is becoming more stable. First and foremost, retail supply chains being stretched by consumers getting ready for lockdown has spurred an improvement in trucking data.On top of this, Shanker stated, “While many parts of the manufacturing complex and other industries (airlines, hospitality) may be required to shut down completely in a national lockdown, the supply chains for consumer staples will likely continue to run, putting trucking, at least, toward the defensive end of industry exposure.” Once supply chains resume normal activity, freight transportation will be needed to restock, with this potentially causing tightness in supply and significant rate inflation.Specifically explaining why ODFL represents an exciting play, the four-star analyst said, “We see ODFL as a best-in-class trucking asset and the most defensive company within Freight Transportation. This should protect the multiple better than at peers, in our view... We also note that ODFL arguably has more room to cut costs in a down cycle compared to other fixed cost businesses (like the Rails, for example) since their record margins in recent quarters have been driven by strong yields rather than cost cutting.”As a result, Shanker upgraded the stock from Equal-weight to Overweight, but dropped the price target from $220 to $205. Should this target be met, a twelve-month gain of 56% could still be in store. (To watch Shanker’s track record, click here)With 2 Buys and 6 Holds assigned in the last three months, the word on the Street is that ODFL is a Moderate Buy. Not to mention the $199.50 average price target brings the upside potential to 52%. (See Old Dominion stock analysis on TipRanks)Virgin Galactic Holdings (SPCE)Operating as part of the Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson’s spaceline and vertically integrated aerospace company wants to expand access to outer space, developing and operating a new generation of space vehicles to achieve this goal. While some investors might see Virgin Galactic’s steep drop in the last month as a negative, Morgan Stanley argues the opposite.Weighing in on the stock for the firm, analyst Adam Jonas wrote in a note to clients that the recent weakness doesn’t change his underlying bullish thesis. Acknowledging that the space tourism space could see a modest decline, he points out that the company maintains a “healthy” cash position, which lands around $500 million. He adds, “... its expected ~$16 million per month cash burn (MSe $180 million in 2020) positions it well to navigate any near-term headwinds.”Going forward, Jonas notes management has stated that each step in the testing process is important and with each mission, continuous refinement, like fatigue dynamics and stress testing, of the spacecraft can be performed for reusability, quick turn-around, cost and safety. Expounding on this, the five-star analyst commented, “We expect this process of continuous refinement will ultimately be measured in years and will continue concurrently with the early commercial missions...”Having said that, given the COVID-19-induced sell-off, there’s a risk that demand for luxury experiences will drop. However, Jonas argues, “All that being said, the company's estimates conservatively assume an under penetrated high net worth (HNW) market (<0.1% of those with $10 million-plus net worth) and the space tourism capacity it expects to deliver has been expected to fall short of demand. Lastly, the story and mission remain unchanged, where the space tourism business serves to incubate the hypersonic P2P opportunity.”With the share price reflecting a space tourism business delay and early credit for the hypersonic opportunity, Jonas joins the bulls, upgrading his call to Overweight. Even though he cut the price target to $24, this still leaves room for 62% growth to the upside. (To watch Jonas’ track record, click here)Looking at the consensus breakdown, 2 Buys and 1 Hold issued in the last three months add up to a Moderate Buy consensus rating. At $29.67, the average price target implies shares could soar 101% in the next year. (See Virgin Galactic stock analysis on TipRanks)Cognex Corporation (CGNX)As for Cognex, Morgan Stanely is much less optimistic when it comes to the maker of advanced machine vision and industrial barcode reader systems, with shares taking a fall in the last month.Writing for the firm, analyst Joshua Pokrzywinski acknowledges that the company has experienced multiple expansion over the last few years as a result of investors deeming the current year as a “trough”. However, he believes that the flattening of demand after the 2017 OLED boom and decline in automotive and consumer electronics markets has delayed a rebound by several years.“Given meaningful weakness in automotive production and demand this year, we see another year of double-digit declines. Weaker consumer demand also weighs on our outlook for consumer electronics for CGNX, though multiple weak years softens the blow,” Pokrzywinski commented. There is some good news. Pokrzywinski thinks Amazon’s COVID-19-driven throughput challenges could fuel significant growth for CGNX in the logistics market. However, he foresees “many other customers to defer spending as cash in traditional retail markets grows extremely tight in the short-term due to both lower consumer spending and the lack of brick-and-mortar foot traffic.”Also concerning, the company saw negative operating leverage on 5% revenue growth in 2018 as well as a 97% decremental margin in 2019. “The company has a small, highly skilled employee base and we believe management will rightfully prioritize retention, but that it will drive a similarly high decremental margin in 2020,” Pokrzywinski explained. In line with his pessimistic take, Pokrzywinski gave CGNX a thumbs down, downgrading the rating from Equal-weight to Underweight. The price target gets a haircut as well, to $36 from $42. The new target puts the downside potential at 15%. (To watch Pokrzywinski’s track record, click here)Turning to the rest of the Street, other analysts take a cautious approach. Based on 1 Buy, 3 Holds and a single Sell published in the last three months, CGNX earns a Hold analyst consensus. In addition, the $44.25 average price target implies modest upside potential of 5%.
