The issue opened on Aug. 10 and closed on Aug. 14.The Singapore government’s sovereign wealth fund picked up 11.08% of the placement, while a Morgan Stanley investment fund bought 7.31% and a Societe Generale SA fund took 5.55%, the Indian lender said.ICICI Bank had already raised about 31 billion rupees by paring stakes in its publicly traded units, including ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co., according to exchange filings. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

World’s Most Favored Bank Stock Misses India Market Rebound
- (Bloomberg) -- India’s ICICI Bank Ltd. is the world’s highest rated banking stock, but its performance hasn’t exactly been stellar. The $32 billion lender has 56 buy recommendations, and its consensus rating of 4.95 on a scale of 5 is the highest among the 50 largest banks globally, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Meanwhile its share price is down 32% this year, ranking it in the bottom four of that same group.Coronavirus lockdowns and low interest rates have taken a toll on global financial stocks, and India’s banks are still reeling from a crisis among the nation’s smaller shadow lenders. Even so, attractive valuations and signs of demand picking up in the villages should stand ICICI Bank’s shares in good stead, said Sanjiv Bhasin, executive vice president at IIFL Securities Ltd.“We are witnessing a strong monsoon rainfall, and the rural sector is doing very well,” Bhasin said. “The valuation of ICICI Bank gives a lot of comfort as it has been an underperformer.”India’s second-largest public lender is trading at about 1.9 times book value, cheaper than the NSE Nifty Bank Index’s 2.7 times. Its earnings have held up, with a 36% rise in net income for the June quarter, helped by the sale of stakes in its insurance subsidiaries. While the bank reported higher provisions against bad loans due to the pandemic, it plans to raise as much as 150 billion rupees through a share sale to institutions to boost its balance sheet. A number of peers have undertaken such financial buffer building this year, and passive flow is seen helping to support ICICI Bank’s stock.“Funds that track the MSCI, FTSE, Nifty 50 and Sensex indexes will need to buy around 40.8 million shares (10% of the share issued in the qualified institutional placement) over the next couple of weeks and the stock could be supported and outperform its peers,” Brian Freitas, an analyst for Smartkarma, wrote in a note on ICICI Bank. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

ICICI Bank quarterly profit misses estimates as provisions soar
- India's ICICI Bank Ltd on Saturday reported a quarterly profit that missed analyst estimates as its provisions for bad loans rose sharply to account for the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Net profit at the country's second-largest private lender for the quarter ending June 30 was 25.99 billion rupees ($347.69 million) compared with a profit of 19.08 billion rupees ($255.25 million) in the same period a year ago, the bank said in a regulatory filing. The additional provisions were "with the objective of completely cushioning the balance sheet from the impact of COVID-19," President Sandeep Batra said on a post-earnings conference call.

Apollo Global Said to Plan to End Venture With India’s ICICI
- (Bloomberg) -- Apollo Global Management Inc. is seeking to start its own credit investment business in India as the U.S. alternative asset manager plans to end a joint venture with ICICI Bank Ltd., according to people familiar with the matter. The New York-based firm plans to stop putting new money into Aion Capital Partners and exit its existing investments over the next few years, the people said. Apollo has informed ICICI of its intentions, said the people, asking not to be identified as the information is private.Apollo, which manages about $316 billion of assets globally, opened its office in Mumbai in 2008, according to its website. It founded Aion Capital as a strategic partnership with ICICI Venture three years later. Aion had assets under management of $660 million as of March 31 and offered a net internal rate of return of 5%, filings show.ICICI Venture’s exclusive partnership with Apollo has matured, and the two parties agreed to change their relationship from April 1, a representative for the Indian company said in a statement. While Apollo will advise on Aion investments until the end of the fund’s term, the U.S. firm and ICICI Venture are free to independently pursue other opportunities, according to the statement.A representative for Apollo said the firm continues to see private equity, credit and real estate opportunities in India. The firm will invest in the country from various pools, including its global flagship fund, where it can be “the most effective and opportunistic” and partner with “the largest groups in the country,” Apollo said in a statement.Building out its private equity and credit platform in India is among Apollo’s growth strategies, according to a May investor presentation. Setting up a credit business could turn the U.S. asset manager into a direct competitor to ICICI Bank and other local lenders in helping companies with their debt. Its peers such as KKR & Co. are expanding their credit operations in the country, which is facing soured-debt woes as the economy slows.India is considering a new category of alternative investment fund, which will focus on acquiring stressed assets from banks and shadow lenders, Bloomberg News reported this week. The fund will be allowed to buy stressed assets directly from the banks and non-banking financial companies, people familiar with the matter have said.At present, investors can only access bad loans through securities issued by asset reconstruction companies. The new fund category will allow them to do so directly. This will give foreign investors, including global hedge funds, easier access to the mountain of local bad debt.(Updates to add Apollo’s global AUM in third paragraph.)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.
