GoPro Turns To Selling Outdoor Gear As Coronavirus Impacts Business
- Digital action camera firm GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRO) launched a line of outdoor gear, bearing the company's branding, worldwide on Tuesday. What Happened: The new gear features products such as bags, apparel, and water bottles, which the company's CEO Nicholas Woodman described as attractively priced. The subscribers of the company's GoPro Plus service can claim a 30% discount on the newly announced gear.GoPro said it would also host a virtual charitable event it is called "GoProLiveIt," between Friday and Sunday. Why It Matters: The adventure camera maker has been bearing the brunt of the pandemic and laid off more than 200 employees in April. The company then announced a direct sale strategy for its cameras and pledged a reduction in non-headcount related operating expenses by $250 million in 2021.GoPro's CFO Brian McGee said at the time that a direct-to-customer-centric approach is "better aligned with the current business climate." In the past, the company has launched products such as flashlights and currently sells four models of its cameras, two of which were launched in 2019, TechCrunch reported. The launch of the gear could be an attempt to stay relevant among sagging sales, and the launch of the branded merchandise is an examplar of the so-called GoPro lifestyle, according to TechCrunch.GoPro's shares have traded below the $10 mark since 2017.Price Action: The company's shares closed nearly 3% lower at $5.13 on Tuesday, and traded 0.4% higher in the after-hours session.See more from Benzinga * Facebook Offering Substantial Financial Incentives To Bring TikTok Talent On Its 'Instagram Reels' Platform: WSJ * Moderna Looking To Price Its Coronavirus Vaccine At -, Significantly Above Rivals: FT * Apple Registers 225% iPhone Sales Growth In Q2 In China, Remains Fastest-Growing Smartphone Maker: Report(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. GoPro Head of Design Left the Company Earlier This Year
- (Bloomberg) -- GoPro Inc.’s chief hardware designer Danny Coster left the camera maker earlier this year after joining from Apple Inc.’s design team four years ago.“After nearly four years at GoPro where Danny was instrumental in transforming our design function, Danny decided to take his career expertise and family back to his native New Zealand to begin a new chapter of his life,” a spokesman for San Mateo, California-based GoPro told Bloomberg News. Coster’s last day at the company was in February, the spokesman added. In April, GoPro cut more than 20% of its workforce, shifted its sales strategy away from physical retail to direct-to-consumer, and cut its 2020 financial guidance due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Still, action camera hardware is key to GoPro’s future, and the departure of Coster means the loss of an influential product and design leader.Read more: GoPro Cuts More Than 20% of Workforce, Changes Sales StrategyCoster joined GoPro in 2016 as vice president of design, and his departure from Apple’s famed industrial design team was one of the first for the Cupertino, California-based technology giant. GoPro stock rises after reporting revenue in-line with pre-announcement in April
- GoPro Inc. rose 1.5% in the extended session Thursday after the company reported revenue in-line with what it pre-announced in April. The company reported a first-quarter net loss of $63.5 million, which amounts to 43 cents a share, compared with $24.4 million, or 17 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Adjusted for stock-based compensation, among other things, losses were 34 cents a share. Revenue fell to $119.4 million from $242.7 million in the year-ago period. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had estimated adjusted losses of 34 cents a share on revenue of $119.1 million. On April 15, GoPro yanked its 2020 guidance due to the coronavirus, said it was laying off 20% of its staff, over 200 employees, and reducing operating expenses by $100 million. The company said at the time that its global distribution network was hurt by the pandemic, but its "product roadmap" for 2020 won't be impacted. The company also pre-announced revenue and adjusted earnings per share in April. GoPro had said it sold roughly 700,000 cameras during the quarter and reduced its channel inventory by 30%. For the second quarter, analysts model adjusted losses of 14 cents a share and sales of $137.4 million. "We've taken decisive action to transition into a more efficient and profitable direct-to-consumer business," GoPro Chief Executive Nicholas Woodman said in a statement. "This benefits GoPro with a substantially reduced operating expense model, improved gross margin and a significantly lower threshold to profitability." Shares of GoPro have fallen 46% in the past year, as the S&P; 500 index fell 1.2%.

STOCKS RISE WITH FED SUPPORT, VIRUS TREATMENT HOPES (1605
EDT/2005 GMT)
U.S. stocks advanced on Wednesday though they pared gains
sharply right before the close. Stocks were boosted by positive
trial results for a potential treatment for COVID-19 and by
comments from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell said now is not the time to worry
about debt, but to use the "great fiscal power" of the United
States to avoid deeper damage to the economy from the virus. He
also warned that the virus would slam near-term growth and pose
"considerable risks" in the medium term.
"There as no expectation of a rate decision. We're at the
zero bound and we'll be there for the foreseeable future. What
the market really likes from Powell is his suggestion that
there's more the Fed can do both in terms of the size and scope
of its tools to aid the economy and markets. This implies that
the Fed is not out of ammunition," said Michael Antonelli,
market strategist at Baird in Milwaukee.
Long before Powell spoke investors had been cheering after
positive early trial results for Gilead Sciences Inc's
antiviral remdesivir, which a top U.S. health official said
would likely to become the standard of care for COVID-19 as it
helped certain patients recover more quickly.

ARE STOCKS JUST POPULAR BECAUSE CASINOS ARE CLOSED? (1315
EDT/1815 GMT)
While volatile stock markets tend to scare away many
part-time investors, DataTrek co-founder Nicholas Colas says
this market is unusual as data suggests that retail investors
have actually been piling in. His explanation? Casinos and
sports events have been closed down, so stocks may be providing
gamblers with their only chance for a flutter.
Colas cites data from online broker Robinhood showing a 40-
120% increase in accounts holding stocks including Ford,
Aurora Cannabis, General Electric, GoPro Inc
and Disney compared with March 1, before
COVID-19 related lockdowns.
He notes that aside from Disney, this is a list of hugely
volatile stocks, which leads him to the conclusion that it must
be at least partly due to participation by gamblers who can no
longer go to the casino. "The dopamine rush of a full house is
the same as holding a hat-sized stock into an up 3% open on the
S&P. The human brain doesn’t know – or care – that one is
gambling (a proven long-run zero return) and one is investing
(proven long-run compounding)," said Colas, also citing data on
Google searches for the term "buy stock" as a support for what
he concedes is a "somewhat off-the-wall analysis."
But the data also leads him to wonder "what happens when the
US economy starts to reopen, and retail investors can go outside
and to work instead of sit at home trading?"
For similar reasons, Julian Emanuel, chief equity and
derivatives strategist at BTIG, also sounded worried about what
happens to trading when the economy reopens.
Emanuel says demand for equities among the Millennial age
group is a core part of his firm's thesis for higher stock
prices. So when Millennial investors are among the first to
return to work and have to leave their trading screens, he sees
a key source of demand for high-flying FAANG stocks disappearing
with them.

S&P 500: TRYING TO LEAP OVER A FIBO FENCE (1201 EDT/1601
GMT)
The S&P 500 is forging just above a key Fibonacci
retracement of its February-March swoon. (Click on chart below)
Indeed, the broad-market average has pushed slightly above
the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement of the recent bear-phase at
2,934.49. Traders will be watching to see if it can make the
leap into the close.
Meanwhile, a momentum study is also nearing an important
hurdle. After falling into deeply oversold territory in
late-February, the daily RSI (now at about 66) has been steadily
improving. That said, it has yet to muster enough strength to
move back into overbought territory (>70.00).
If the SPX can overwhelm the Fibo barrier, with the RSI
moving back into overbought, it can suggest potential for a more
extensive recovery. This because the index's strong underlying
thrust may require more time to dissipate, as was the case
earlier this year. At that time, the S&P 500 made higher highs
while the RSI diverged. The SPX only peaked after a period of
waning momentum.
On a greater advance, the SPX will still have to contend
with its 200-day moving average (now at about 3,006). The
maximum Fibonacci retracement zone of the February-March slide
(76.4%/78.6%) is at 3,109.93/3,136.36. The Nasdaq 100 is
ahead of the game, and already nearing this resistance.
Thus, action in the aftermath of today's FOMC Meeting may be
critical, given the potential for increased volatility.

GDP DROPS 4.8%, ENDING THE LONGEST-EVER U.S. ECONOMIC
EXPANSION (1100 EDT/1500 GMT)
The U.S. economy suffered its sharpest decline in 11 years in
the first quarter as shutdown orders to curb the COVID-19
pandemic brought business activity and consumer spending to a
screeching halt.
Gross domestic product (GDP) contracted at a
4.8% annual rate in the first quarter, according to the U.S.
Commerce Department, marking the largest drop since the global
financial crisis.
In comparison, analysts had expected GDP to fall by 4%, and
many believe the worst is yet to come.
"Ultimately, the market knew this was bad, didn't know the
exact number, but knew that it was a significant negative
leading to what will be a more significant negative," said
Justin Hoogendoorn, head of fixed income strategic analytics at
Piper Sandler.
Personal expenditures shrank at 7.6%, the data point's worst
showing since 1980 according to Oxford Economics, which is bad
news considering the American consumer accounts for about 70% of
the economy.
A separate report from the National Association of Realtors
(NAR) showed pending sales of existing homes plunged
by 20.8% in March, blowing past the 10% drop economists
predicted.
While Lawrence Yun, chief economist at NAR, expects listings
and buying activity will begin to resume as the economy slowly
restarts, he suspects the damage has been done.
"The usual Spring buying season will be missed, however, so
a bounce-back later in the year will be insufficient to make up
for the loss of sales in the second quarter," Yun writes.
"Overall, home sales are projected to have declined 14% for the
year."
But bad economic data seems baked into the market for now.
All three major U.S. stock indexes were sharply higher, with
the S&P's Energy sector leading the charge in percentage
gains.

WALL STREET RISES WITH VIRUS TREATMENT HOPES (1030 EDT/1430
GMT)
Even as data showed the U.S. economy declined more than
expected in the first quarter, Wall Street's main indexes were
rising on Wednesday as investors were optimistic about results
from trials of a potential COVID-19 treatment from Gilead
Sciences.
Investors have been heavily focused on trials for potential
COVID-19 treatments as they are betting that once patients can
be treated, officials will be have greater confidence easing
stay-at-home rules to help reboot the economy.
Gilead said its experimental antiviral drug remdesivir
helped improve outcomes for patients with COVID-19, and provided
data suggesting it worked better when given earlier in the
course of infection.
"If it actually works then that's good news. The market's
moving on the Gilead news," said Chris Zaccarelli, chief
investment officer, Independent Advisor Alliance, Charlotte, NC
in a telephone call.
Zaccarelli wrote that the awful Q1 GDP decline of 4.8% was
even worse "when you consider that the first two months of the
first quarter were relatively normal and this number only
includes the March lockdowns."
But he noted, "GDP news is backward looking. Everybody knew
it was going to be bad."
"What matters to the market is forward looking information
like when we're going to get a cure or a vaccine. Any news on
treatment or a vaccine for COVID-19 is going to outweigh
backward looking economic numbers," he said.
The S&P 500's communication services sector
was the biggest gainer as Google rose ~8%.
After this Energy and financial sectors were
the S&P's biggest percentage gainers.
Mastercard shares rose more than 6% after it reported
quarterly results that were much better than feared. More
defensive sectors lost ground.

STOCK FUTURES REACT TO THE "3Gs", POINT TO HIGHER OPEN (0856

U.S. equity index futures are pointing to a higher open for
the major averages on Wednesday.
This after Alphabet reported double-digit ad
revenue growth in its quarterly report on Wednesday
, and Gilead Sciences said this morning
that its experimental antiviral drug, remdesivir, had met the
main goal of a trial testing it in COVID-19 patients.
That said, Q1 Advance GDP fell 4.8% vs. a Reuters poll
calling for a decline of 4%.
In any event, as the market sorts through the GOOGL, Gilead
news and the GDP data, stock futures have strengthened, while
the U.S. 10-Year Treasury yield is around 0.60%.

GoPro Plunges 14% On ‘Ugly’ Earnings; Decides To Accelerate Strategy
- GoPro Inc (GPRO) shed 14% in Wednesday’s trading after the company pre-announced Q1 revenue of $119 million, down 51% year-over-year, and far below its prior guidance of $140-160 million. The action camera maker reported adjusted losses in the middle of its projected range of $0.30-$0.40 per share, with cash of $125 million and channel inventory down by 30%. However with direct to consumer up significantly in the quarter, the average selling price (ASP) increased 23% sequentially to $350.“For a consumer electronic company with a non-essential product levered towards tourism and getting outside … the numbers were ugly” stated Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz. But he is encouraged by the fact that GoPro management is doing something many others aren’t doing: accelerating its business plan. For GoPro that involves accelerating its strategy towards a direct-to-consumer model, which ‘makes sense’ given that Core GoPro users are already mostly digital. This will enable the company to restructure its sales and marketing team, including a workforce reduction of over 20%. Specifically, GPRO announced plans to reduce Non-GAAP OpEx by $100 million in 2020 (from $377M in 2019) and further in 2021 to $250 million.“With a leaner model, GoPro is better positioned to remain cash flow–positive despite vastly lower revenue (updated model down 52%). And beyond COVID-19, a lean GoPro, a profitable GoPro, a strong brand in GoPro … is an Outperform stock” cheers Uerkwitz. As a result the analyst reiterated his GPRO buy rating with a price target of $7- indicating upside potential of over 150%. However, Uerkwitz is the only bull in the picture right now- with the stock displaying a Hold analyst consensus. (See GPRO stock analysis on TipRanks). The company also withdrew its 2020 financial guidance, while CEO Nicholas Woodman announced plans to forego his salary for the rest of the year.Related News: Goldman Sachs Profit Plummets 49% as Loan-Loss Provisions Balloon Costco Ramps Up Dividend By 8% Arcus Surges 50% In After-Hours Trading On Rumored Gilead Stake More recent articles from Smarter Analyst: * Starbucks Prepares to Gradually Reopen U.S. Cafes in May after Coronavirus Shutdown * RBC: 3 Growth Stocks to Buy for a Post-Coronavirus Recovery * ConocoPhillips to Cut Oil Production, Spending Amid Crude Price Collapse * Jefferies Pounds the Table on Aphria (APHA) Stock

GoPro To Lay Off 20% Of Employees And Shift To Direct Sales Strategy
- GoPro Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRO) will lay off more than 200 employees and sell its adventure cameras directly to consumers amid the coronavirus pandemic. What Happened With its restructuring efforts GoPro, which manufactures action cameras, video-editing software, and mobile apps, will save more than $100 million in 2020. The company also announced a reduction in non-headcount related operating expenses by a further $250 million in 2021, in a statement released on Wednesday.Nicholas Woodman, the CEO of GoPro, said, "GoPro's global distribution network has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, driving us to transition into a more efficient and profitable direct-to-consumer-centric business over the course of this year." The company's Chief Financial Officer Brian McGee believes the more direct-to-consumer-centric approach is "better aligned with the current business climate, is accretive to [average selling price] and gross margin, and positions [GoPro] well for when consumer demand begins to normalize." He said the reduced operating expenses and improved ASP and gross margin, would significantly lower the "threshold to achieve profitability."View more earnings on GPROAdditionally, GoPro announced the appointment of Aimee Lapic as the company's Chief Digital Officer to lead its direct-to-consumer growth initiatives. Lapic's previous experience includes the position of Chief Marketing Officer at Pandora, a Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) run music and podcast platform, and at Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS) owned Banana Republic. Why It Matters GoPro is withdrawing its Q1 and 2020 earnings guidance due to COVID-19 related uncertainty. First-quarter revenue is expected to be $119 million and adjusted loss to the tune of $0.30 per share. GoPro sold 700,000 cameras during the first quarter. It has $125 million in cash and equivalents as of March 31.Woodman will forego the remainder of his salary till the end of 2020, while the Board of Directors has also volunteered to forego the remainder of their cash compensation. The adventure camera maker has also reduced its office space in five locations and slashed sales and marketing expenditures for 2020 and beyond. No change is expected to the 2020 product roadmap, which will involve roll out of new devices and services.Price Action GoPro shares traded 3.01% lower at $2.58 in the after-hours session on Wednesday. The shares had closed the regular session 13.64% lower at $2.66.See more from Benzinga * Robinhood Said To Be Raising 0M In New Funding * Amazon Closes French Warehouses After Court Ruling Limits Operations To Essential Deliveries * President Trump Halts WHO Funding Citing Mismanagement Of Pandemic(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. GoPro Cuts More Than 20% of Workforce, Changes Sales Strategy
- (Bloomberg) -- GoPro Inc. said it will cut more than 200 jobs, shift the company’s sales operation to market its digital adventure cameras directly to consumers and withdraw its 2020 financial guidance in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The operational changes, staff reductions of more than 20% and cuts to office space will save $100 million in 2020, and reduce expenses next year to $250 million, the San Mateo, California-based company said Wednesday in a statement. GoPro said its shift to direct sales will mean a stronger focus on its website. The company said it still will use retail outlets for a small number of regions where such sales are preferred by consumers.“We have a clear opportunity to super-serve consumers’ demand for our products in a more direct and efficient manner which can have a positive impact on the profitability of our business,” Chief Executive Officer Nick Woodman said in the statement. While withdrawing its forecast, GoPro said its expects to report first-quarter revenue of $119 million and an adjusted loss in the mid-30 cents a share. The company sold 700,000 cameras in the period, and said the staff and operational changes won’t affect its 2020 product road map, which will include new devices and services. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.
