Kyle Larson reinstated to compete in NASCAR in 2021

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kyle Larson can return to NASCAR competition next season following a long suspension for using a racial slur while playing a video game. He was suspended in April after he used the n-word while playing an online racing game in which viewers could follow along. He was dropped by his sponsors and fired by Chip Ganassi Racing. Larson, who is half-Japanese, spent the last six months immersed in diversity programs that helped him gain an understanding of racial injustice. He did not apply for reinstatement until last week and the clearance came Monday. "The work I've done over the last six months has had a major impact on me. I will make the most of this opportunity and look forward to the future," Larson said. Larson has spent significant time with retired soccer star Tony Sanneh, whose foundation works on youth development and empowerment in the Minneapolis area. Larson also met with former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee and visited her foundation in East St. Louis, and also spoke with Max Siegel, the CEO of USA Track & Field who also runs a NASCAR-sanctioned team that is part of the stock car series' diversity program. Larson continued work he'd already been doing with the Urban Youth Racing School in Philadelphia. The nonprofit helps minorities advance in motorsports and Jysir Fisher, one of its students, had celebrated with Larson in victory lane following a win in Delaware last October. He put the work in unpublicized in an effort to prove his motives were sincere. "NASCAR continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion across our sport. Kyle Larson has fulfilled the requirements set by NASCAR and has taken several voluntary measures to better educate himself so that he can use his platform to help bridge the divide in our...

NASCAR's upcoming economic model spurs interest in new teams

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Justin Marks tried three times to buy the NASCAR equivalent of a franchise license that guarantees a car a spot in each week's race. Twice he was outbid, he said, and a third deal fell apart. Without that charter, Marks had almost no chance to get his team on track in 2021. He ultimately had to lease one from another organization to become the second new NASCAR owner to announce a team in the last month. As NASCAR plans for the 2022 cost-cutting introduction of the "NextGen" new car, the demand for charters has soared. At least three have been sold since August - ownership records of each charter are not updated by NASCAR until the start of a new year - and the bidding process has been frenzied. "It was much more difficult for us than I anticipated it being," Marks said this week after announcing Trackhouse Racing. "There are a lot of charter buyers out there and unfortunately there are not a lot of charter buyers out there that are trying to build championship-caliber race teams." The environment has dramatically changed in the three years since Furniture Row Racing folded its team and put its championship-winning charter up for sale. Barney Visser struggled to find even a single bidder and Spire Sports + Entertainment, the agency Visser was using to broker a sale, gambled and bought it themselves. The charter system debuted in 2016 to create tangible worth for team owners who in the previous independent contractor market had only inventory, equipment and possibly real estate to show for their NASCAR participation. If they went out of business, there was little recourse to recover any investments. The 36 charters guarantee entry into every Cup race, and therefore a portion of the purse. The charters can be sold on the open market and also leased to another team for one...

Column: Job market rough for mid-level NASCAR drivers

  • TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - One of NASCAR's big shots won at Talladega Superspeedway, a hectic and crash-filled race that still, somehow, managed to showcase three drivers in need of a job. Matt DiBenedetto, Erik Jones and Ty Dillon all followed winner Denny Hamlin across the finish line in a predictably chaotic and white-knuckled triple-overtime finish. A win would not have locked down a 2021 seat for any member of the trio, but it certainly would have generated buzz to sway a potential sponsor. This season during the pandemic has led to the most tumultuous free agent period in two decades and mid-level drivers are being squeezed out during an economic reset. The multimillion-dollar salaries for A-list drivers have shrunk, paying rides are few and far between, and the market is flush with inexperienced, young entrepreneurs armed with some sponsorship dollars. "It's getting to a tough place in the sport where you have to bring money with you," Dillon said. "A little bit goes a long way right now." The nature of Talladega gave all three a shot at racing for the win and then selling their story to a sympathetic crowd. Talladega permitted about 15,000 fans and they saw a record 13 cautions and 12 laps in overtime for a four-plus hour event stopped by two red flags. They booed when Hamlin was declared the winner after a NASAR review, but cheered the underdogs who weathered the on-track carnage while facing job uncertainty: - DiBenedetto doesn't know if his option will be picked up by Wood Brothers Racing and the deadline last week for a team decision passed without a word. It's the second year in a row his job status has been in flux late in the season and he miraculously upgraded his 2019 release with his current Team Penske-affiliated ride. DiBenedetto wants to return to the No. 21 Ford but he's at the mercy...

Hamlin wins in 3rd overtime of Talladega's longest race

  • TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - Denny Hamlin put himself in position to finally win in the playoffs by hanging at the back to avoid the carnage of the messiest and longest race in Talladega Superspeedway history. His sweeping three-wide pass in triple overtime Sunday brought an end to the sloppiest race of the season. The Daytona 500 winner surged to the win coming out of the final turn - it was the 58th lead change of a race that went nearly 32 miles, or 12 laps, longer than scheduled. Talladega was pocked with 13 cautions, two more than the record, and nearly every title contender had some sort of damage. Only six of the 12 made it to the finish. Hamlin insisted lagging the No. 11 Toyota at the back of the field all day, waiting to pounce at the end, was his strategy all along. Either that, or he was simply the last driver standing when given the chance to snap a skid that started with the playoffs one month ago. "I hate to say it, but you have to play the game. You have to get to the next round," Hamlin said. "To win the championship, you have to win the last race and you have to get to the last race. For us, we played the strategy to play the numbers to make sure we got locked in." Fitting for this particular wreck-fest was that Hamlin's win needed official review. He had gone below the yellow out-of-bounds line during the third overtime, but NASCAR ruled the move was legal. "They were crashing in front of us," Hamlin shrugged. "Obviously, I got forced down there." The crowd of 15,000 - the most allowed to attend the Alabama superspeedway - booed Hamlin as he was declared the winner. He dismissed any notion of a controversy over the yellow line rule, noting it had been called by NASCAR the same way the entire race. The race went more than four hours,...

NASCAR at long last adds schedule variety with 2021 changes

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - After two decades of the same left turns at the same tracks over and over again, NASCAR finally upended its stagnant calendar with a 2021 schedule that is as radical as the sport has ever seen. Three new venues. A dirt race for the first time in more than 50 years. And a whopping six road courses for the elite Cup Series in an overhaul unveiled Wednesday that dumped some of the cookie-cutter oval tracks right off the list. It is a true shakeup after a lack of imagination created the most predictable schedule in sports, one that favored new speedways - 1.5-mile ovals that not only all looked the same, but raced the same, too. Not since Indianapolis Motor Speedway was added in 1994 had a Cup race been awarded to a track that was not part of an ownership group for an active speedway. NASCAR set aside all the old ways of doing business. "We said back in 2019 ... 2021, you were going to see some really bold changes from NASCAR," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's executive vice president. "We believe we've delivered on that. We are excited for our fans, it's an historic schedule, the most changes since 1969." NASCAR will visit three new venues: Road America in rural Wisconsin, which will host the Cup Series for the first time since 1956; the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas; and Nashville Superspeedway, a visit that was previously announced. Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee will fill its 0.533-mile bullring with soil for the first Cup race on a dirt track since Richard Petty won at State Fairgrounds Speedway in Raleigh in 1970. Next year's schedule was the first time NASCAR could make big changes since 2016, when it entered into unprecedented, five-year sanctioning agreements with race promoters. That meant no changes, even as...

Column: Busch family hobby goes full circle at home in Vegas

  • LAS VEGAS (AP) - The racing bug hit the Busch family long before the NASCAR champion brothers were born. Their father attended the first Daytona 500 in 1959 with his parents, and later, while working as a mechanic at a Las Vegas car dealership, he decided to try racing at the local short track. Tom Busch built and won in his own cars. When his boys were born, he built cars for them, too. It was just a hobby when it began but it turned out the Busch brothers were a pair of thoroughbreds. Busch developed his sons into a pair of aggressive and motivated young drivers who dominated the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, then raced their way to North Carolina hoping to make it in NASCAR. Kurt kicked the door open and Kyle, seven years his junior, followed. Today they have a combined 88 Cup Series wins, three shared Cup titles and are considered among the most talented and knowledgeable drivers of their generation. Now they are celebrating a weekend that brought the Busch family full circle. Kurt Busch finally won at the home track about 24 hours after a third generation Busch went to victory lane: Brexton Busch, Kyle's 5-year-old son, earned the first win of his career, in a winged box stock at Millbridge Speedway in North Carolina. Brexton's budding career is being steered, of course, by Tom Busch. "My dad is the truck driver, the team manager, the crew chief, the lead mechanic and all that stuff, on his cart. So he's got a big task," Kyle Busch said. Brexton's win sparked emotions for all the Busch drivers, particularly Kurt, who was reflective after his nephew's win. Kurt wasn't there when Brexton won Saturday night but got all the details as the family flew to Las Vegas together Sunday morning. "I just sat there on the plane going 'My dad helped me, we...

Hamlin, Michael Jordan partner on NASCAR team for Wallace

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Denny Hamlin has joined Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan to form a NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace as the driver, a high-profile pairing of a Black majority team owner and the only Black driver at NASCAR's top level. The partnership was announced Monday night in coordinated social media posts by Jordan and Hamlin, with Wallace adding his own comment. The posts showed a picture of Jordan alongside a firesuit-clad Hamlin in a motorhome at a race track. "Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few Black owners," Jordan said in his statement. "The timing seemed perfect as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more." Jordan becomes the first Black principal owner of a full-time Cup team since Hall of Famer Wendell Scott drove his own race car in 495 races from 1961 to 1973. Scott's 1964 victory at the Jacksonville 200 is the only win by a Black driver in Cup history. The NBA great, who earlier this year pledged $100 million over 10 years for initiatives combating systemic racism, said the move into NASCAR is another step toward racial equality. "I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for Black people in racing," Jordan said. Jordan joins former NBA player Brad Daugherty, a partner at JTG Daugherty Racing, as the only Black owners at NASCAR's elite Cup level. "Michael and Bubba can be a powerful voice together, not only in our sport, but also well beyond it," Hamlin said. Hamlin, a three-time Daytona 500 winner and a top contender for this year's Cup title, will be part of a single-car Toyota entry aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin has raced his entire career for Gibbs, a Hall of Fame NFL coach. "Eleven years ago I met Michael Jordan at a...

NASCAR races, Wallace says fight for racial equality goes on

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Major sports across North America ground to a halt in the wake of another police shooting of a Black man, this time in Wisconsin. Auto racing was not among them. NASCAR drivers do not plan to skip Saturday night's race at Daytona International Speedway to raise awareness of social and racial injustices. Bubba Wallace, the only fulltime Black driver in the elite Cup Series, said that decision should not be interpreted as "turning away from the dark and evil acts that have taken over our nation." The 26-year-old Wallace has been a leader in pushing NASCAR for more diversity and its recent ban on the Confederate flag at race tracks. His activism since George Floyd died while in police custody in Minnesota has made him a spokesperson of sorts for his peers on social issues, and he was the first driver to address any action potentially planned at Daytona. "I hope you all understand that by us continuing to race this weekend, DOES NOT mean we are stepping down and turning away from the dark and evil acts that have taken over our nation," Wallace tweeted. "Absolutely NOT!!! I can assure all of you that myself and many of my competitors are continuing to work hard with @NASCAR to continue the efforts and the fight for racial equality. Let's stand or kneel TOGETHER and continue push for what's right." The Milwaukee Bucks did not take the court for their NBA playoff game Wednesday night in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The NBA, WNBA and MLS called off games, the NHL postponed its playoffs for two days and some Major League Baseball teams refused to play. Like NASCAR, other racing series pressed ahead this week, including IndyCar in Illinois and Formula One in Belgium, where six-time champion Lewis Hamilton - the only Black driver...

Hamlin holds off JGR teammate Truex for 1st Dover victory

  • DOVER, Del (AP) - Denny Hamlin crossed Dover off the meager list of tracks where he had yet to win and turned his ambitions toward one more goal he'd like to scratch off the docket. Pushing 40, Hamlin's first career Cup championship is within his grasp -- and he might never be better. "I'm in the prime of my career right now and I've got things rolling," Hamlin said. Hamlin tamed the concrete mile oval that gave him fits for 15 years and zipped past Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. with eight laps left to win the NASCAR Cup Series race Saturday at Dover International Speedway. Hamlin was 0 for 28 at Dover, the kind of losing streak that had him studying the runs of his more successful JGR teammates in Truex and Kyle Busch to pick up tips on how best to win at the track. He learned from his teammates -- then beat them in the No. 11 Toyota, though Truex's runner-up finish and Busch's third gave JGR a 1-2-3 finish in the first of two races this weekend at Dover. "People always ask what your least favorite track is and I say Dover just because I'm not that good," Hamlin said. "I love the track, I just haven't been very good here." Hamlin matched Kevin Harvick for the season victory lead with six, matching his total from last season and closing within two of his career high set in 2010. He opened this season with a Daytona 500 win, and added wins at Homestead, Pocono and Kansas to catapult toward the kind of sensational run he's never had in an otherwise stellar career. "There's been no year where it's been like this," Hamlin said. "Every week. It's literally every single week. We set some lofty goals at the beginning of the year to try to win 10 races. It's still achievable. We should have more than six easily." . ..

Johnson makes last-gasp playoff push in final year at Dover

  • Jimmie Johnson is at the win-or-else stage of his playoff push as he hits his favorite track. Johnson has a record 11 victories at Dover International Speedway, a staggering total that started in 2002 and stretched to June 2017, a win that has stood for three-plus years as his last in NASCAR. With Dover moving one of its two scheduled NASCAR race weekends to Nashville Superspeedway next season, Johnson's mark seems unbreakable. But his farewell season could end in tatters if he's racing out the string with nothing at stake and no fans roaring from the stands. "I never wanted to have a winless drought or have a winless season," Johnson said Friday. "But I've worked through so many of those emotions over the last couple of years and also understand that there are factors that I can't control that have affected my performance." Win at least one of the two Cup races this weekend at the Delaware track, and he's in the postseason. Dover, where Johnson has led 3,110 laps, is no sure shot these days for the No. 48 team -- Johnson has lost his magic touch on the Monster Mile with two finishes of 14th or worse in the last three races. Without a win, his playoff chances hang by a thread. Johnson is 25 points outside the playoff cutline with two Dover races and next week's regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway left to end his final full NASCAR season in the championship hunt. Yes, he's far removed from his dominant days in the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, which has nudged him into the outside of the playoff field. Johnson, a 22-1 longshot, might be in a more snug position had it not been for two disastrous results: His No. 48 failed inspection in May at Charlotte, negating his runner-up finish. That cost him 45 points, a total which...

The Latest: Clemson's Trevor Lawrence considered opting out

  • The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world: ___ Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence said he considered opting out of this season when he was unsure what college football would look like going forward amid the coronavirus pandemic. But Lawrence said Friday once he understood he'd play an 11-game season with a chance for an Atlantic Coast Conference and national championships, he decided to play his junior season. Lawrence is considered a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy and a likely No. 1 overall pick in the next NFL draft should he leave college early. Lawrence said he's completely committed to this season. Lawrence was 25-0 as a starter until he and Clemson fell to LSU in the national title game last January. Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 junior, had perhaps his poorest performance in college in the 42-25 loss to LSU. He joked how after his freshman year when he led Clemson to a championship he heard how amazing he was and since the LSU defeat, he heard how much work he has to do improve. Lawrence said he's confident in Clemson's ability to keep himself and his teammates safe this season. - Conference USA is leaving open the option for its schools to play a full 12-game football schedule. The league's board of directors said Friday that the initial conference schedule, with each team playing eight C-USA games, will remain intact. The first conference game is Sept. 12. League schools will also be allowed to play up to four non-conference games at their discretion. C-USA's championship game remains scheduled for Dec. 5, though league officials said there was flexibility for moving to a later date if that weekend is needed to potentially reschedule any regular-season games. The board approved return to play safety...

NASCAR and jousting exceptions to SC's large crowd ban

  • COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Fans can watch September's NASCAR race at Darlington in person and have a four-course meal while watching a medieval jousting tournament thanks to exceptions granted to South Carolina's rule banning gatherings of more than 250 people during the COVID-19 pandemic. At least 71 events have been given permission to draw the larger crowds, according to the South Carolina Department of Commerce, which reviews the requests. Some are mutliday versions of the same event or concerts. Some are shows at Myrtle Beach like the Medieval Times dinner and jousting competition. There are sporting tournaments for children and the Showstopper Dance Competition. A bridal expo in Florence is a go, as well as the South Carolina Farm Bureau's annual meeting. Gov. Henry McMaster lifted the ban on gatherings of up to 250 people on Aug. 3, but allowed anyone who wanted to have more people to ask the state's business agency for an exception. The Commerce Department requires any group with a large gathering to require masks and detail other ways they can keep the crowd safe from COVID-19. The agency said it also consults health officials. The Southern 500 NASCAR race at Darlington Raceway is the only large scale sporting event given permission to have fans so far. The track hosted NASCAR's first race after the pandemic in May with no one in the stands. College football teams also expect to ask to bring in at least some fans for games starting next month. The list was first reported by The Post and Courier of Charleston. The larger crowds come as South Carolina's COVID-19 outbreak appears to have ended nearly two months of rapid spread. The virus hasn't stopped - there were 1,265 newly diagnosed cases Friday, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and...

The Latest: Miami sack master Gregory Rousseau opts out

  • The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world: ___ Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau, who was second in the nation with 15.5 sacks last season, has opted out of this college football season. Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said during a conference call that Rousseau would not play. He would have been a third-year sophomore and is eligible to enter the NFL draft next year. Rousseau is the fourth prominent player, joining Penn State linebacker Micah Parson earlier in the day, who has decided not to play in a season filled with uncertainty because of the pandemic. Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley and Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman, both expected to be high draft picks, have previously announced they are opting out. Rousseau played two games in 2018 as a freshman before breaking his ankle and taking a redshirt. He had a breakout season in 2019, finishing strong with 10.5 sacks in the second half. The 6-foot-6, 260-pounder is projected as a possible first-round draft pick. ___ Middle Tennessee is making up for losing three games by scheduling a very rare for football home-and-home with Troy. Massaro says they anticipated this scenario. Contracts have not been signed yet, and Massaro says this agreement works for both of the former Sun Belt Conference rivals with no guarantees involved and bus trips for both teams. Middle Tennessee also will keep future schedules intact. — Penn State says it is not expecting to have fans at home football games this season, a decision forced by the pandemic that will cost the schools millions in revenue. Athletic director Sandy Barbour said during a conference call she has taken a 15% pay cut on her salary. Penn State has one of the largest stadiums in the country, holding more than 107,000 fans for big games. Students typically camp out in “Nittanyville” around the stadium leading into football Saturdays. Statewide policies are limiting gatherings in Pennsylvania to fewer than 500 people. Barbour said if the policies change, plans for fans might as well. In a letter to season ticket holders, Penn State provided options for this season, including refunds or making payments a donation to the school. ___ BYU will...

Ganassi makes crew chief change for Matt Kenseth

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Chip Ganassi Racing has made a crew chief change for the No. 42 driven by Matt Kenseth, with engineer Phil Surgen taking over for the remainder of the season. Surgen has been with the Ganassi organization since 2016. He replaces Chad Johnston, who had been the crew chief for the No. 42 team since 2016. The team did not address Johnston's status in its Tuesday announcement. Kenseth was hired in late April after Kyle Larson was fired for using a racial slur while participating in an iRacing event. The former NASCAR champion had retired from the sport but was lured back for this disjointed season because Ganassi believed he was the most talented driver available. Kenseth finished 10th in his debut with the team in May at Darlington but has had one top-10 finish since, a runner-up showing at Indianapolis last month. He finished 37th last weekend at New Hampshire and was involved in three cautions. Kenseth's status for 2021 is not clear, but Ganassi is believed to be courting Bubba Wallace. McDonald's is one of the top sponsors of the No. 42 and already has an existing relationship with Wallace. Wallace is in a free-agent season with Richard Petty Motorsports, which wants to bring Wallace back next year. Team co-owner Andrew Murstein has said a piece of ownership in the Petty organization has been offered to Wallace in their negotiations.

Leavine Family Racing to close at end of 2020 season

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Leavine Family Racing has sold its NASCAR team but will finish the season with driver Christopher Bell. Team owner Bob Leavine made the announcement Tuesday, saying he could not risk his 41-year-old construction business by continuing to fund the team. Leavine is the second team owner to close its doors after aligning with Joe Gibbs Racing. Furniture Row Racing won a championship with driver Martin Truex Jr. in partnership with Gibbs. But when Gibbs raised the price and Furniture Row lost a critical sponsor, owner Barney Visser pulled the plug and closed the team. Truex moved to a Gibbs car and Leavine signed on as a Gibbs partner. The partnership provided a landing spot for Bell, a JGR development driver who needed a promotion to the Cup Series but couldn't get into one of Gibbs' four seats. Bell, a rookie, has just one top-five finish this season and is ranked 23rd in the standings driving the No. 95 Toyota. Leavine has not revealed who purchased the charter, which guarantees entry into the 40-car field each race. "It's a bad taste in my mouth to be perfectly candid," Leavine said. "It's not something I'm used to of not being able to control what we do and what we spend. Right now, I'm happy for what we've done. "Our growth in five years as a full-time team, the people we have here in our shop I would not swap for anyone, anywhere. The family owned a big percentage of the team and we just couldn't continue to commit to put money into it. I don't see a whole lot of things that I've succeeded at. Today isn't necessarily one of the happier days that I've ever had in this sport." Leavine said 2020 has been a difficult year and "the pandemic has impacted our economy, and unfortunately that's just not something we...

"There is no good time to make this announcement, but doing it earlier allows our people to explore employment opportunities, for next season, to provide for their families. There will be opportunities with the new owners which was important to our decision." Keselowski lands extension with Penske after 3rd victory

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Brad Keselowski finally got a contract extension from Team Penske, announced the day after NASCAR's 2012 champion won his third race of the season. Keselowski has been open in his desire to remain with the organization where he gave Roger Penske his first NASCAR championship. The 10-week shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic prolonged extension talks but a deal was announced Monday. Terms were not released, but a person familiar with the contract said the extension is one year through 2021. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not disclose details. Keselowski won Sunday at New Hampshire and trails only Denny Hamlin (five wins) and Kevin Harvick (four) in Cup wins this season. All three of Keselowski's victories have come since the season resumed in May and with a new crew chief. "We are pleased that Brad will continue to be a part of our organization," Penske said. "Brad not only demonstrates talent and skill on the track, but his leadership away from it and his dedication to our partners have had a huge impact in making our organization one of the best in NASCAR." Keselowski's deal was announced as NASCAR prepares to race twice this weekend at Michigan International Speedway, his home track. He has 33 career victories - 31 since joining Penske in 2010, the year he won the Xfinity championship. He added the prestigious Cup title two years later. Keselowski has been part of four Xfinity Series owner championships and passed Mark Donohue in 2019 as Team Penske's winningest driver. "I have been racing for Team Penske for the vast majority of my NASCAR career and to continue to represent Roger Penske, our partners and his organization is exactly where I want to be," Keselowski...

  • SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - The $21 billion sale of Speedway gas stations has bought Marathon Petroleum some breathing room as the global pandemic continues to quash travel and smother demand for gasoline and jet fuel. Wall Street focused on the sale to 7-Eleven over the weekend, rather than the huge losses the company posted Monday, with a lack of demand for fuel leading to refinery shutdowns. The deal comes just two days after Marathon announced the idling of refineries in New Mexico and California. The sale bolsters Marathon's cash reserves after it posted an $868 million second-quarter loss. Marathon will use the proceeds to reduce debt and pay dividends to shareholders. A lot of cash-starved companies have slashed dividends to ride out the pandemic, a more difficult proposition in the energy sector, where investors take a regular dividend as a given. "We think the dividend is safe," said Citi analyst Prashant Rao, who believes the cash infusion will provide some debt cushion to the Findlay, Ohio, company. The all-cash sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2021 and comes with a 15-year fuel supply agreement for 7.7 billion gallons per year for its stations. Marathon could also negotiate supply for 7-Eleven's other retail gas stations. The companies did not say how many Speedway stations were included in the agreement. Marathon lists more than 10,000 U.S. locations under Marathon, Speedway and Arco signs. U.S. crude prices have plummeted 33% this year in the outbreak. While that would lower input costs for refiners like Marathon, gasoline demand has fallen in tandem as businesses and households cut travel. "Despite seeing some recovery during the quarter, demand for our products and services continues to be significantly depressed, particularly...

Keselowski wins in New Hampshire for 3d win since shutdown

  • LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - With about 70 laps to go in his back-and-forth battle against Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin radioed in to his team: "This is awesome racing." Imagine how Keselowski felt. The 2012 Cup champion took the checkered flag at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, beating Hamlin by 1.647 seconds after trading the lead with him for most of the 301-lap race. The two swapped stage wins and held the lead a combined 18 times before Keselowski claimed his third victory since the sport returned from the pandemic shutdown, along with the now-traditional prize of a 18-pound, live lobster. Afterward, Keselowski grabbed a U.S. flag and spun his car around in front of a crowd that spent most of the race masked and socially distanced before crowding the fence to chant "Brad! "Brad!" "It's so great to be racing back in front of fans again. It feels like forever, so welcome back, guys," said Keselowski, who is in a contract year at Team Penske. "We're just so glad to have them all back. It feels so weird to be racing without fans, but we're glad you're here. I hope you stay safe and thank you for being here." Hamlin also finished second in New Hampshire last year following a sprint to the finish that left him 0.210 seconds behind Kevin Harvick. Hamlin has five victories this year, including last week in Kansas. "It was fun racing those guys. They were very very deserving today and I'm happy for them," he said. "The two best cars finished 1-2 today and they got the better end of it. I was having a good time there." Martin Truex Jr. was third after working his way back from the rear of the field because of a penalty for a runaway tire in the pits. Joey Logano was fourth and Harvick fifth. "When those things happen, you just have to...

Finger Lakes area expects economic hit from cancelled race

  • WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Business owners and local officials predicted the decision to cancel the NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International later this month will be a major economic loss for the Finger Lakes region of New York. NASCAR and Watkins Glen International have cited coronavirus-related health regulations and logistics issues for the decision to move the event to the Daytona International Speedway road course in Florida. It was scheduled to take place Aug. 13-16. Schuyler County Administrator Timothy O'Hearn told the Poughkeepsie Journal the NASCAR weekend generates about $50 million in revenue for the region. It's the biggest event at the speedway and typically attracts up to 100,000 people. "The loss of NASCAR plus the loss of state aid plus a drop in tourism, it's been a perfect storm for us," O'Hearn said. "It's impossible to replace the loss of NASCAR. It could result in 20% of our revenue, as much as $2 million, in direct sales tax loss. We're most dependent on tourism and its impact on our economy." Kamala Keeley, president of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce, said the weekend has been important to the hospitality industry, local restaurants, retailers, service industries and the Elmira Corning Regional Airport. "Watkins Glen is one of the most popular locations for NASCAR and the races are a sellout event, generating significant sales tax and room tax," Keeley said. "Although we understand moving the race to Daytona this year was a necessary decision given the current circumstances, it's no doubt our entire region will be missing that annual boost to local economies," she said. The speedway announced Saturday that a sports car race that had been rescheduled for September will now be moved to Georgia "as a...

Hamlin-Harvick duel resumes as Cup Series hits New Hampshire

  • Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick spent the final lap at New Hampshire a year ago jockeying for the lead, the two clearly the class of the field as the NASCAR Cup Series race approached the checkered flag. It turned out to be a harbinger of the wacky 2020 season. Hamlin and Harvick have been the strongest cars on a weekly basis amid the coronavirus pandemic, combing for nearly half of the wins through 19 races. Hamlin won his series-leading fifth just over a week ago at Kansas Speedway, where Harvick - the winner at New Hampshire last season - lamented how off his No. 4 Ford felt despite a top-5 finish. "Those guys have been solid. They're going to be in the top 5 even on their bad days," Hamlin said ahead of Sunday's return to the flat, mile-long track at New Hampshire. "You call it a bad day; he nearly won it with 10 to go or so. He still finds a way to get to the top 5. That's just a really strong race team." Then again, so is the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin could match the six wins he posted a year ago, when he made the final round of the playoffs, and begin setting his sights on the eight wins he had during the 2010 season. And more importantly, he could continue to rack up playoff points to help usher him through this year's postseason as Hamlin pursues his first series championship. "This race team, we go to win every week. That's our goal," said Hamlin's crew chief, Chris Gabehart. "I'm not saying we're going to meet that measure, but I go into every week planning to do our very best to do it." Hamlin and Harvick both have been pretty successful at New Hampshire. Harvick leads all active drivers in wins with four while Hamlin has three, and he has five second-place runs there with the most recent being last year. Remember? When...

Bubba Wallace Is By Himself, Again

  • Click here to read the full article. Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr., the only African American top-tier driver in all of NASCAR , recently hit a wall, literally, crashing during the qualifier for the Cup Series All-Star Race in Bristol, Tennessee. But by the end of June - after spearheading a successful campaign to ban the Confederate flag from all NASCAR events, followed by the discovery of a noose hanging in the garage assigned to him at Alabama's Talladega Superspeedway - when he spoke to Rolling Stone , the 26-year-old driver was just ... done. "Yeah, let me paint the picture for you," Wallace says, with notes of both relief and apology in his voice. "Last couple weeks, obviously, have been a lot. Part of it, all warranted. And tons of interviews, and interviews, and interviews. And you, my friend, are the last one before I get to shut my phone off. So if my answers are short, I apologize. The Latest: Saints QB Drew Brees donating another $5 million

  • The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world: ___ Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his wife, Brittany, say they’re donating $5 million toward a partnership with a Louisiana health care provider to build “numerous” health centers in economically struggling communities around the state. Brees said in his announcement on social media that the first center will be built later this year in eastern New Orleans in partnership with Ochsner Health. This marks the second multimillion donation Brees has made to benefit Louisiana since the coronavirus pandemic spread to the United States. In March, he donated $5 million to assist food banks in the state as people began losing jobs because of businesses closures or staff reductions stemming from government restrictions aimed at curbing the virus’ spread. Louisiana, with a population of nearly 4.7 million, has been hard hit by the virus. As of Sunday, state health department figures showed a total of 107,574 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,651 deaths. ___ The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has decided to cancel fall sports competition due to continuing health and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor says there are simply too many factors that prohibit the conference from safely delivering a competitive atmosphere. A decision on whether fall sports competition would be feasible in the spring will be determined by the conference presidents at a later date. MAAC student-athletes whose seasons have been canceled will still be permitted to train when they return to campus, and institutions will be responsible for implementing their own training guidelines in accordance with state and local COVID-19 regulations and guidance provided by the...

The Latest: NCAA cuts required number of fall contests

  • The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world: ___ The NCAA has reduced the minimum number of contests required of Division I fall sports teams, excluding football, by 50% this season. The decision by the Division I Council coordination committee to grant a blanket waiver for any school that needs it affects men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, field hockey, men's water polo and women's volleyball teams. Some conferences, like the Big Ten and Pac-12, have already announced they will play nothing but conference schedules in their fall sports. The oversight committee also agreed to suspend the criterion requiring teams to have at least a .500 record to be considered for at-large selections into a championship field. A previous decision by the Division I Council allows conferences to determine how their automatic qualifiers are chosen for NCAA championship events up to two weeks prior to selections. ___ The National Hockey League reported zero players tested positive for the coronavirus last week. The league says it administered a total of 4,256 tests to more than 800 players from July 18-25. Two players tested positive during the first week of training camps July 13-17. Denny Hamlin downright dominant as NASCAR season pushes on

  • KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - There was no talk of championships when Denny Hamlin's team met during NASCAR's offseason to discuss goals for the upcoming year, even though that is just about the only thing he has yet to win at the sport's highest level. In fact, team owner Joe Gibbs and crew chief Chris Gabehart didn't even mention the season-ending race at Homestead. "His goal has been very simple," Hamlin said. "He gave me a list of probably six guys in history that won X number of races. He said, 'You want to be a legend? Get on that list. You win that number of races, you've done something special.'" Hamlin won't divulge that number, but it must be more than five. That's the number he hit Thursday night at Kansas Speedway, where he led four times for a race-high 57 laps. He took the lead for the last time on Lap 255 and held off the charging Brad Keselowski over the final 12 laps to making back-to-back wins at the fast mile-and-a-half track. The win broke a tie with Kevin Harvick for the most this season and gave Hamlin at least five for the second straight year. It also gave him 11 wins in less than two full seasons with Gabehart, whose arrival last year instantly reinvigorated the No. 11 team - and Hamlin, who was coming off his first winless season since his 2005 rookie year. "This is as good as he's ever been," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. "All the pieces are there for him, that's for sure." Together, Hamlin and Gabehart have become the latest "it" team in NASCAR, following in the footsteps Harvick-Rodney Childers and Jimmie Johnson-Chad Knaus. They've built a certain comfort and trust that is rare in the sport, and that's why even on what they call an off night - like at Kansas - they still found a way to coax their Toyota to the front. . ..

Bowyer heads to Kansas Speedway without his typical crowd

  • KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — This is typically one of the busiest weeks of the year for Clint Bowyer, who grew up in the small southeast Kansas town of Emporia and began his racing career on the dirt surface of Lakeside Speedway just outside Kansas City. The NASCAR star is fielding ticket requests for the Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway. He's slipping back to his home town to check on his auto dealerships. He's entertaining sponsors, meeting with friends — among them Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce — and trying to squeeze in a Royals game over at Kauffman Stadium. But there is nothing typical about anything in the age of the coronavirus. Instead, Bowyer will show up for Thursday night's race with no family crowding into his hauler, no fans in the stands. He will wear a mask along with everyone else in the garage area, and head to the track without practice or qualifying. “Obviously it's going to be drastically different not having fans,” Bowyer said. "That is what put this sport on the map. That is what has kept it on the map all these years and without that, it is just a void that can't be replaced. “Are we putting a product on the track? Yes. Are there people at home watching? Yes, the ratings show that and these are the things keeping us relevant,” he continued. “I think the rest of the world is fixing to see first-hand just like we experience in the last few months and the difference and challenges and impact of not having that fan presence there. It isn't just the presence, it is the atmosphere of your event. Without that, it isn't quite the event it could be or should be or would be.” There have been fans at select NASCAR races since the pandemic began, including the All-Star race at Bristol and last weekend's race at Texas. Tickets are also being sold for New...

Column: Houff crash renews debate on NASCAR's standards

  • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kyle Busch was hit with a wave of backlash when he griped about drivers who lack the experience to race at NASCAR's top level. This was last fall, after the opening race of the playoffs at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, when Busch ran into the back of Garrett Smithley, who was 12 laps down. "We're at the top echelon of motorsports, and we've got guys who have never won Late Model races running on the race track," Busch fumed. "It's pathetic. They don't know where to go." Busch's point was lost in his delivery and he was quickly painted as an entitled champion driving for an elite team who just wanted a backmarker to get out of his way. Smithley and other lesser-known drivers from underfunded teams quickly defended their right to race in the Cup Series. Busch's argument - that there should be standards to be among the top 40 NASCAR racers each week - was never actually addressed. And here we are again: Quin Houff, in his 35th career Cup start, made a late mistake Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway that not only scrambled the finish but altered the playoff picture. Houff tried to dive onto pit road but hit two other cars he did not see, bringing out a caution with 29 laps remaining in the race. Several contenders had pitted and dropped a lap off the pace because of the untimely caution.
