High-Flying EV Maker Nikola Plummets in Bumpy Earnings Debut
- (Bloomberg) -- Nikola Corp.’s first earnings report was a bumpy one, with executives and analysts trading barbs and investors sending the electric-truck maker’s shares plunging. The stock fell 18% in late trading after the company, which develops big rigs that run on batteries and fuel cells, said it lost $86.64 million in the second quarter, a five-times greater net loss than a year ago.Within minutes of Nikola releasing its statement, its founder Trevor Milton was tweeting that the Phoenix-based company had provided analysts figures on the company’s share count. He wrote that taking those figures into account, the manufacturer beat expectations, contrary to some who said it fell short.Analysts responded in kind by pressing Chief Executive Officer Mark Russell on Nikola’s earnings call for more information on new customers, production timing and any confirmation of a partnership with a manufacturer that will build the company’s electric pickup model, called the Badger.“So, Mark, I just wonder, is this all we get?” Paul Coster, an analyst at JPMorgan who rates Nikola the equivalent of a buy, said to Russell. Jeff Osborne of Cowen said trying to follow timelines Milton has been communicating on social media has been “a bit confusing.” Nikola hopes to begin testing the battery-electric version of its first semi truck, the Tre, with select customers in 2021. The company has a joint venture with CNH Industrial NV’s Iveco truck unit to start limited production of the vehicle in Ulm, Germany, at the end of next year. Trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells will be built in Coolidge, Arizona, starting in 2023, where the company broke ground on its first U.S. manufacturing plant last week.Russell declined during the call to name any new customers beyond Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, which has previously announced ordering 800 fuel-cell semis. In a phone interview, Russell said the company has potential buyers around the world.“We had a fleet week in Europe where we bring the customers in, and we have had representatives of a good chunk of the market in our headquarters,” Russell said. “A good chunk of the target customers have been to see us. We’ve been in conversation with them for some time.”Nikola listed its shares in early June following a reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company and quickly saw its market capitalization surge to almost $29 billion, at one point surpassing Ford Motor Co.’s valuation. Lordstown Motors Corp. and Fisker Inc. are now trying to follow suit. After ending the quarter with $707.3 million in cash and equivalents, Milton said in an interview that Nikola’s focus will be on financial prudence as it brings products to market. The company expects to raise another $264.5 million by redeeming stock warrants.“We run a really tight ship here and we do spend money, but only when it’s needed,” Milton said. “That’s why we’re going to succeed and others have failed. They spent money like it’s just handed out.”(Updates with founder’s tweets starting in the third paragraph.)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

Europe Is Building the Next Tesla. Who Knew?
- (Bloomberg Opinion) -- When Nikola Corp. started trading on Nasdaq in June, the Phoenix-based clean transportation company raced quickly to a valuation of almost $30 billion. Its market worth has since fallen to a more reasonable $10.5 billion, but that’s still pretty spicy for a business yet to generate any revenue. Its most promising products are its heavy trucks, powered by electric batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. The rise of Nikola (whose name, cheekily, is another evocation of electrical engineer Nikola Tesla) will have reinforced a view among European auto industry executives that the U.S. stock market operates by different rules. While Tesla Inc. is only modestly profitable, it’s valued at about $275 billion, more than Europe’s five largest carmakers combined. At least Europe has a stake in the latest heavily hyped project. Founded by Trevor Milton, a 38-year-old American college dropout, Nikola is relying heavily on expertise from the old continent. Robert Bosch Gmbh, a German automotive supplier, has helped develop the U.S. company’s electric powertrain, and the first Nikola trucks will be built in a German factory belonging to Italy’s Iveco, a truck maker backed by the billionaire Agnelli family. Bosch and Iveco each own more than 6% of Nikola. CNH Industrial NV, Iveco’s parent, just recorded a $1.5 billion fair value gain on that investment.(1) The biggest question is whether a start-up dependent on so much external help should have a whizzy valuation like Tesla, which builds much of its technology itself. And if Europe has this expertise, why hasn’t it produced its own rival to Elon Musk’s carmaker?Maybe it’s a lack of chutzpah. Nikola’s name isn’t the only reason it’s often compared with Tesla. Milton’s hyperactive Twitter presence makes Musk look tame by comparison. Both men’s ambitions extend beyond selling zero-emission vehicles to producing and storing clean energy. While Nikola is focused on heavy-duty trucks, it has touted a variety of consumer products including a pickup called the Badger. These are catnip for retail investors, as the excitement over Musk’s Cybertruck demonstrates. While Tesla and Nikola are both working on electric heavy trucks, they differ in at least two important respects. The first is hydrogen: Musk is dismissive, while Milton thinks hydrogen is the perfect fuel for long truck journeys. The second is their attitude toward building stuff in-house. True, in its early days Tesla worked with Lotus to help make the Roadster, and Daimler AG helped develop the Model S saloon. Tesla partners with Panasonic to produce battery cells. But Musk is famous for trying to build his own technology, from electric powertrains and automated-driving software to car seats.Nikola developed its own software, infotainment and battery management-system, as well as vehicle aerodynamics, according to Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne. It has outsourced or used hired help to do much of the other stuff. More than 200 Bosch employees were involved in building important parts of Nikola’s trucks, including the electric motor for the axle, the vehicle-control unit, the battery and the hydrogen fuel cell. The result is a mix of intellectual property owned either separately or jointly by Nikola and its suppliers. There’s no doubt, however, who has the deeper expertise. So far Nikola has been awarded 11 U.S. patents, about 1% of the total Bosch is awarded in a typical year. “Bosch gets paid to help us get to industry standards on products,” Milton told me.Getting partners to provide the technological building blocks has some advantages. Nikola has only 300 employees and yet its first trucks should start rolling off the production line soon. Working with partners cuts the risk of the manufacturing delays and quality problems that plagued Tesla. It’s an efficient use of capital too. Nikola’s research and development expenses were just $68 million last year. Tesla spent $1.3 billion. After going public, Nikola has about $900 million of cash, although that won’t go far in the automotive business. For the North American market, Nikola plans to handle its own manufacturing, with technical assistance from Iveco. Nikola broke ground this week on a $600 million factory in Arizona.Whether or not you believe the extensive involvement of outside partners should have a bearing on its lofty valuation, there are other things that could upset Nikola’s plans. Building a refueling network is a central part of its business model, but this won’t come cheap at $17 million for each hydrogen station. The company is also entering a competitive field populated by more experienced and better capitalized rivals. Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz failed to follow through on its early experiments with electric cars and let Tesla roar past. It probably won’t make the same mistake with trucks.Daimler is the world’s largest truck maker and it plans to start production of its electric eActros and eCascadia models next year. The German giant has also formed a joint venture with Sweden’s Volvo AB to develop hydrogen fuel cell systems for heavy vehicles. That venture is valued by the companies at just 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion), putting the Nikola valuation into perspective. Even if its share price looks overblown, Nikola’s improbable rise shows there’s investor demand for clean transportation companies that don’t still have one foot planted in the combustion-engine past. European manufacturers have the technical chops but they must find better ways to capitalize on investor excitement through new business models or spinoffs. Otherwise someone else will.(1) This was measured on June 30 when Nikola's stock was much higherThis column does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the editorial board or Bloomberg LP and its owners.Chris Bryant is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist covering industrial companies. Connectivity for all Brazilian farmers is the next efficiency leap
- CNH INDUSTRIAL N.V. ConectarAGRO * Connected CNH Industrial equipment enables productivity gains of up to 20%. * The company is a leader of the ConectarAGRO Association, which aims to bring the internet to the countryside and remote regions of Brazil.London, July 23, 2020 Brazil is a world leading producer of grain, and is set to reach a new national grain production record, with some 251 million tons of soybeans and corn in the 2019/2020 harvest, according to the Country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. In the near future, a significant improvement in rural productivity is expected thanks to increasing connectivity, one of the pillars for the continuity of the Brazilian agriculture evolution. To guarantee network access in the field, CNH Industrial is one of the founders and leaders of ConectarAGRO, a non-profit association that aims to bring internet to all agricultural and remote regions of the Country in an open, accessible and simple way – working to overcome a challenge faced by more than 70% of rural properties, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The organization is convinced of the important benefits offered by connectivity, an essential aspect to enable the full use of automation, servitization and digitalization – three pillars of CNH Industrial's growth strategy.“By bringing connectivity to the countryside, we will benefit not only farms, where equipment and people will be connected, but the entire value chain that involves agribusiness as well as logistics operators, who transport the harvest. Both agricultural and construction equipment will be able to operate to their full potential, using all onboard technologies, increasing producer profitability, land usage as well as enabling the reduction of fuel consumption and wasted inputs,” said Vilmar Fistarol, General Manager South America, CNH Industrial. In 2019, ConectarAGRO expanded connectivity to more than 5.1 million hectares of rural areas in Brazil via 4G LTE 700 MHz broadband, which represents around 8% of the Country’s grain and sugarcane planted area – an area which is greater than Belgium, Holland and Switzerland combined. This coverage benefited more than 575,000 individuals, 218 towns and eight states, as well as more than 24,000 kilometers of roads.CNH Industrial has further strengthened its commitment to the initiative with the election of Gregory Riordan, the Company's Director of Digital Technologies for South America, as President of the newly formed ConnectarAGRO Association.“It is a significant responsibility to lead such an important project. By 2021 we want to have more associates, expand connectivity to 13 million hectares in Brazil and develop projects aimed at upskilling people who live and work in the countryside within a new digital reality,” said Mr. Riordan. "In parallel, we will analyze with interest the international expansion of ConectarAGRO, since we have already been contacted by institutions in other South America countries.”Practical gains with connectivityConnected equipment enables significant productivity and efficiency improvements: when using connected technologies Case IH and New Holland Agriculture planters can increase efficiency by up to 5%, when following planned paths together with the use of real-time monitoring, to minimize downtime. The planning of harvesting logistics can increase machine availability by up to 20%, thereby avoiding unscheduled stops and facilitating onward crop handling logistics.Case IH and New Holland Agriculture sprayers can follow pre-prepared prescription rate maps as well as use real time satellite or drone images, resulting in reduced input usage by some 15%, lowering operating costs and enhancing overall efficiency. As such, access to automation and digitalization facilitates better management of machinery fleets, agricultural property and production planning, enabling accurate, fact-based decision making. This roll out will benefit entire rural communities and their ways of working. CNH Industrial N.V. Don’t Pull the Trigger on Nikola Stock Until After the Next Big Dip
- A sudden wariness about speculative tech stocks - along with the disappointment of some investors in the number of orders for Nikola's (NASDAQ:NKLA) upcoming truck -- have caused Nikola stock to slide meaningfully in recent days. Selling by institutional investors who bought shares when the company was private likely also contributed to the slide.Source: Stephanie L Sanchez / Shutterstock.com The downturn is likely to continue for a while. However, given the company's strong potential, I think that long-term, risk-tolerant investors should consider buying the shares if they fall another 30%-40%.In recent days, many investors seem to have become alarmed about the high valuations of some tech stocks. Among the victims of this new-found caution is Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), which Nikola is clearly trying to emulate. The name "Nikola" kind of gives it away.InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading TipsFrom their peak on Monday morning to Wednesday afternoon, Nikola's shares fell 18%. * 15 Growth Stocks That Are Being Propped Up By Low Rates Meanwhile, disappointment about the number of deposits that Nikola has obtained for its upcoming Badger truck has likely weighed on its shares.Specifically, Nikola CEO Trevor Milton reported that his company was receiving "about 1,500 deposits per day" for the Badger. But, as Barron's noted in its July 6 article, "Tesla's [competing] Cybertruck has taken in hundreds of thousands of reservations since it was introduced in late 2019."In a column published on July 6, I had warned that Nikola's decision to accept deposits could hurt its stock price. A Closer Look at Nikola StockAs I also noted in my previous column, I wouldn't bet on the Badger generating runaway sales for Nikola. But I'm much more upbeat on the company's longer-term outlook in the commercial-truck market. And I pointed out in my article on Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) published on July 15, that "regulatory moves by California and Europe are going to lead to hydrogen-fueled trucks becoming much more widespread in those jurisdictions."I also reiterated my belief that "many companies will look to boost their environmental credentials by acquiring and using hydrogen trucks," while "that trend is likely to accelerate as hydrogen and renewable energy become cheaper."Further, I agree with Milton's contention that hydrogen-fueled trucks are far more suited to long-distance travel than battery-electric trucks. Moreover, Nikola's plan to build five hydrogen stations could prove to be quite profitable. That's because, as more hydrogen-powered trucks from various companies hit the road, Nikola could make a great deal of money by selling fuel. And importantly, Nikola has made some impressive deals that validate the company, its know-how, and its vehicles. For example, European vehicle-maker CNH Industrial (NYSE:CNHI) has invested $250 million in Nikola.Further, European auto parts maker Bosch and Chinese solar energy company Hanwha have each invested "at least $10o million" and a cumulative $230 million in Nikola. Finally, as I've noted previously, Anheuser-Busch (NYSE:BUD) in 2018 "placed an order for up to 800 hydrogen-electric powered semi-trucks from Nikola." Nikola Has Further to FallEven if the aversion to growth stocks ends soon, Nikola stock is likely to retreat further. That's because the number of shares of the company that are on the market has recently jumped by 52.5 million, or 14%. Those shares were acquired by institutional investors who bought them for $10 before Nikola went public. And according to a Seeking Alpha columnist, many of those investors will also short NKLA stock, putting further pressure on the name. The writer added that he also expects the impending exercise of millions of Nikola's warrants to pressure the shares. And another Seeking Alpha columnist stated that most of these institutional investors have filed to sell all of their shares, while "selling shareholders want to unload over 20% of the company." The Bottom Line on NKLA StockThe company's longer-term outlook is bright. But longer-term investors will likely soon get a chance to buy the shares much more cheaply. I would advise such investors to wait for the stock to reach $30 before pulling the trigger. Those who currently own the shares should sell them now.As of this writing, Larry Ramer owned shares of PLUG stock. Larry Ramer has conducted research and written articles on U.S. stocks for 13 years. He has been employed by The Fly and Israel's largest business newspaper, Globes. Among Larry's highly successful, contrarian picks have been solar stocks, Roku, and Snap. You can reach him on StockTwits at @larryramer. Nikola Sells $5,000 Reservations for Truck With No Prototype
- (Bloomberg) -- Even in the innovative world of electric vehicles, it’s an unusual proposition: Plunk down as much as $5,000 now to reserve the right in a few years to buy a battery-powered truck, before seeing a prototype or manufacturing plan to assure it’ll ever be built. That’s what Nikola Corp., the Phoenix-based company whose sudden stock surge has captured the attention of investors, is asking customers to do starting Monday. The reservations, which are refundable, take a page from Tesla Inc.’s playbook, but they require would-be vehicle buyers to take an even bigger leap of faith than Elon Musk ever did.Nikola founder Trevor Milton has said he hopes the truck, called the Badger, will one day rival Ford Motor Co.’s F-150, which for 43 years has been America’s best-selling pickup. Nikola went public on June 4 through a reverse merger, and the stock more than doubled on June 8 after he tweeted that Nikola would start taking reservations on June 29 for what he called “the most bad a-- zero emission truck.”Nikola told prospective investors before going public that its focus was on producing a different type of vehicle -- big rig semi trucks starting with a model called the Tre. In a March filing, the company said it didn’t expect to draw up plans for the Badger pickup unless an established manufacturer agreed to make it.Nikola will have more details to share this summer about its Badger manufacturing partnership, Colleen Robar, a spokeswoman for the company, said in an email. Investors haven’t registered any concerns about Nikola’s unorthodox approach to vehicle sales. The shares closed Friday at $63.55, up 87% since their listing, and rose as much as 7.4% shortly after the start of regular trading Monday. At $22.9 billion, Nikola’s market capitalization at the close Friday was just short of the $23.5 billion valuation for Ford, which unveiled its next-generation F-150 pickup last week.Read more: Nikola Founder Has $7.4 Billion Fortune on Free Truck OrdersTesla has accepted reservations for models before the company started production, including for this year’s new Model Y SUV. But customers at least had a prototype to look at, and Musk has now marketed five different vehicles. Nikola doesn’t expect to start delivering its first semi truck to customers until next year. It has a joint venture with CNH Industrial NV, whose Iveco unit has been building big rigs for decades, to manufacture the Tre in Germany.Nikola’s plan to work with manufacturing partners is a contrast with Tesla, which went through what Musk repeatedly referred to as “production hell” trying to mass-produce the Model 3 with its own factory. Cowen & Co. analyst Jeffery Osborne said in a June 17 report that Nikola’s outsourcing strategy could mitigate risk.So far, Nikola has shared only computer renderings of the Badger, and has said it will cost between $60,000 and $90,000. Milton predicts it’ll be a hit. “Most likely it’ll be sold out, so be ready and gets yours reserved,” he tweeted on June 15.Interested buyers have to pay close attention to Milton on social media, where details about the Badger come out in drips and drabs. Milton tweeted on June 8 that he expects deliveries of the Badger to begin in 2022, but exact details would be laid out in a partnership announcement before an event he called nikolaworld2020.Eleven days later, he announced that Nikola World would take place in December -- about five months after Nikola starts taking reservations for the Badger. It will be unveiled on Dec. 4.(Updates with shares trading in the sixth paragraph.)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

A Truck Maker With Zero Revenue Scores $7.6 Billion Return for Early Backers
- (Bloomberg) -- It may have zero revenue, but Nikola Corp.’s stock surge has rewarded a few early believers with 10-figure gains on paper.Six investors have positions in the truck maker totaling $8.3 billion after investing about $650 million combined, according to an analysis of filings by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. They include the Agnelli family’s CNH Industrial NV, with a $1.6 billion holding; $1.3 billion for Jeff Ubben’s ValueAct Capital Management, and $1.4 billion controlled by South Korea’s Hanwha Group. There’s also the firm’s first backer: Worthington Industries Inc., the metals manufacturer where Nikola founder Trevor Milton used to work. It gave Milton a $2 million seed investment when he left to set up Nikola and now holds a $1.2 billion stake.“We have been repaid that capital, so our cost basis is zero,” Worthington spokeswoman Sonya Higginbotham wrote Tuesday in an email. In an interview last week, Milton said he used the $2 million during the first year to cover payroll before bringing in additional investment. That included a consortium led by Thompson Machinery Chief Executive Officer DeWitt Thompson V, which controls a $1.4 billion Nikola stake, and Germany’s Bosch, which owns $1.5 billion of shares.Thompson said the focus should be on Nikola’s ambitions and its workers, not his investment. “They deserve the real recognition.”The value of these stakes has fluctuated wildly since Nikola’s reverse merger earlier this month with VectoIQ Acquisition Corp., and skeptics have questioned whether the company will sustain its lofty market value. Short-seller Andrew Left of Citron Research predicted Nikola shares, which climbed as high as $93.99 last week, would fall to $40 in a month. They closed Tuesday at $62.93.“I wouldn’t be surprised if they never get a truck on the road,” Left said.Nikola’s backers are not fazed.“We believe in the possibilities of a hydrogen-based powertrain and infrastructure,” said Bosch spokesman Tim Wieland. A CNH representative said it’s a “long-term, strategic investment,” while Ubben isn’t even focused on the trucks: “One of the keys to understanding Nikola is to view it as the energy company of the future,” he said. “There is tremendous value in the hydrogen stations.”For Hanwha, which has the right to supply solar electricity to Nikola’s hydrogen-charging stations, it’s about having a common objective. “Nikola’s goal of achieving zero emissions is in line with what’s envisioned by Hanwha,” the company said in a statement last week.Milton and his senior managers are doing fine, too. The founder, along with CEO Mark Russell and Chief Financial Officer Kim Brady, own a combined $9.5 billion of stock and options. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

Nikola May Not Be Next Tesla, But Its Valuation Is More Extreme
- (Bloomberg) -- It has some competition, but no stock on the auto sector is a better reflection of the equity market’s recent exuberance than Nikola Corp. The aspiring battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell truck maker debuted on the Nasdaq last week following a reverse merger and its stock quickly took off, doubling on Monday and rising another 28% shortly after Tuesday’s open. Trading was halted twice within the first 40 minutes due to volatility, with the shares plunging as much as 22%. They were back up almost 8% as of noon in New York. The $34 billion market capitalization Nikola had at the intraday peak belies the company’s fundamentals. Nikola is forecasting zero revenue for 2020 and its first $1 billion year in 2023. It doesn’t expect to be fully utilizing an Arizona assembly plant that it hasn’t built yet until 2028.And yet Ford Motor Co., which is expected to report about $115 billion of revenue for this year, has trailed Nikola by market cap at several points in intraday trading. Many skeptics have questioned for years how much electric-car maker Tesla Inc. should be worth. But with Nikola, investors have taken appraisals of zero-emission vehicle manufacturers named after a celebrated Serbian-American inventor into the stratosphere.“People are looking at this as the next Tesla, and they’re being stupid. Investors are being ridiculous,” Sam Abuelsamid, a transportation analyst at research firm Guidehouse Insights, said by phone. “While I think the tech absolutely has the potential to be disruptive, I don’t know that Nikola in and of themselves are, necessarily.”Nikola’s goal is stable growth over time, Trevor Milton, the company’s executive chairman, said in an emailed statement. The 38-year-old said several factors may have spurred Monday’s gain, and cited examples including his tweeted announcement that the company will start taking reservations for a pickup model concept called the Badger.Starting five years ago, when Milton founded Nikola, through the end of last year, the Phoenix-based company has lost about $188.5 million. It’s planning to start delivering the Tre battery-electric semi truck next year, followed by the Two fuel-cell electric model in 2023.The Badger model that Milton said may have gotten the market excited on Monday might not actually make it into production. In Nikola’s public-offering filing, the company said it is focused on making Class 8 heavy-duty vehicles and doesn’t expect to build the Badger unless it finds an established manufacturer to partner with.A spokesperson for the company said Nikola will announce a partner in the near future, without giving more specifics.Last week, Milton ceded the chief executive officer job to Mark Russell, a former COO of metals manufacturer Worthington Industries Inc. who has been president of Nikola since February 2019. VectoIQ Acquisition Corp., the blank-check company Nikola merged with, is led by Steve Girsky, a former General Motors Co. vice chairman who helped lead the carmaker out of bankruptcy.Little CashNikola had about $86 million in cash at the end of last year. Prior to the stock listing, it had raised more than $500 million of private capital, though that includes a $150 million in-kind contribution from CNH Industrial NV, the truck maker linked to Italy’s billionaire Agnelli family. CNH also invested $100 million cash in Nikola last year. The tie-up with CNH includes a 50-50 venture in Europe that aims to start producing battery-electric trucks in Germany in the first half of next year and an alliance in North America related to a factory Nikola will fully own.Nikola is planning to build a 1-million-square-foot facility south of Phoenix and start making trucks in 2021. It’s expecting to reach full production of about 30,000 fuel-cell electric vehicles in 2027 and 15,000 battery-electric vehicles the following year.Although Nikola touts reservations for 14,000 fuel-cell electric trucks that it says are worth about $10 billion of sales, those are far from done deals. The company told prospective investors in April that it was negotiating with strategic fleet partners to convert pre-orders into binding contracts with deposits. While times are good for Milton -- his fortune stood at $9 billion as of Monday’s close, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index -- he still covets something Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has: a blue check mark on Twitter. Then again, Milton may want to be careful about seeking notoriety on Musk’s favorite social-media platform. The account @TESLACharts, which has accumulated roughly 26,400 followers by incessantly trolling Musk, has taken notice of Nikola’s rise. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

Billionaire-Owned Firms Tap State Aid In U.K. Loan Program
- (Bloomberg) -- Government money aimed at helping companies weather the coronavirus is going to enterprises controlled by some of the world’s richest tycoons, according to data released Thursday by the Bank of England.A number of firms owned by billionaires are tapping an emergency funding program backed by taxpayers, even as businesses great and small struggle to reopen. The initiative, called the Covid Corporate Financing Facility, is one of many the government and its central bank have unveiled to support companies that employ millions of workers and play a key role in the economy. The companies include Chanel, the legendary fragrance and fashion house controlled by brothers Gerard and Alain Wertheimer. Their clan has a combined net worth of $56 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Chanel received 600 million pounds ($760 million) in loans from the initiative, which started in March and is financed from the BOE’s reserves.Another recipient is the enterprise that oversees the stadium for premier league soccer team Tottenham Hotspur, in London. It received 175 million pounds in funding and is controlled by Joe Lewis, a billionaire businessman and onetime currency trader who lives in the Bahamas.Truck maker CNH Industrial NV, linked to the business empire of Italy’s billionaire Agnelli family, sought 600 million pounds. Carnival Plc, the Miami-based cruise ship operator whose vessels became hotbeds of coronavirus infections, signed on for 25 million pounds. Its chairman is Micky Arison, who also owns the Miami Heat professional basketball team and is worth $9 billion. And JCB, a construction group owned by the billionaire Bamford family, received 600 million pounds. Chief Executive Officer Graeme MacDonald told the Telegraph newspaper the company hoped not to draw on any of the facility and viewed it as an “insurance policy” against further disruption. The roster may increase scrutiny of companies that are availing themselves of state aid -- even though they appear to have owners with ample resources of their own.“It is absolutely right that the Bank of England supports companies in order to save jobs and protect livelihoods, but I’m appalled that so many billionaire-owned businesses are being financed by the taxpayer,” said Margaret Hodge, a member of Parliament for the opposition Labour Party. “It’s high time that the mega-wealthy reach into their own pockets rather than the public purse.”Hodge, a former chair of the Public Accounts Committee, said her concerns run deeper than billionaire-controlled companies. She said the government must ensure firms that cut corners or use financial engineering to avoid big tax bills don’t take advantage of public support. In a June 3 letter, Hodge urged Rishi Sunak, Britain’s finance minister, to prevent companies with poor tax compliance records from receiving bailout funds.Tottenham Hotspur said in a statement on its website that it will lose 200 million pounds from the lockdown, and will use the funding to meet working capital needs. As for Carnival, a spokeswoman said the company contributes more than 2 million pounds to the U.K. economy every time its ships dock in the country, which happens 250 times a year.A spokeswoman for CNH Industrial pointed to a press release from April 29, in which the company said using the facility demonstrates its efforts to preserve a sound level of liquidity during the crisis. A spokesman for Chanel, which has 1,600 employees in the U.K., said the company closed all its boutiques in the country during the lockdown and will repay the loan within 12 months.Under the CCFF, the BOE purchases commercial paper, with maturity of up to a year, issued by large firms making a “material contribution” to the U.K. economy. So far it’s provided companies with 16.2 billion pounds of funding. The CCFF is “directly protecting hundreds of thousands of jobs and supporting some of our biggest companies’ cashflows,” a Treasury spokesman said on June 5.The effort operates in tandem with a suite of government-backed lending programs for smaller companies. While lawmakers and business groups have criticized the initiatives as slow and cumbersome, commercial banks have approved 31.3 billion pounds of partially and fully state-guaranteed loans to more than 745,000 companies since late March, according to the Treasury. The government has also provided 10 billion pounds in grants to 800,000 firms, deferred tax bills, and scrapped business tax rates.Burberry Group Plc, Marks & Spencer Group Plc and Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc were among the British businesses to draw on the CCFF facility, the central bank said. But the biggest recipient is Germany’s BASF SE, the chemicals giant. It withdrew 1 billion pounds, the maximum allowed under the program.(An earlier version of this story corrected Carnival’s contribution to the U.K. economy.)(Adds Treasury statement and government data on business support in 12th and 13th paragraphs)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

Alternative Stocks That Can Be Golden
- The term "sloppy seconds" doesn't come with the greatest of connotations, however, in trading it might be your golden ticket in certain market environments. When markets get hot and individual sectors or stocks begin to put in moves that measure in the stratosphere, traders, especially momentum traders will begin to search out correlated, ancillary, or competitor plays. It stands to reason that folks who missed out on DKNG, were looking for sloppy seconds, others names with big upside, smaller floats, that live in a similar space.

WeWork Crisis Prompted Nikola's Pivot On Going Public
- After shunning public ownership because reporting quarterly financials didn't mesh with its business, fuel cell trucking startup Nikola Corp. pivoted Tuesday to merge with VectoIQ, a NASDAQ-listed investment fund that will replace private equity scared off by poorly managed startups. "WeWork really ruined a lot of things for the private market," Nikola CEO Trevor Milton told FreightWaves on Tuesday. "In my network, there are probably a dozen or two really awesome entrepreneurs, and every one of them said the capital just became incredibly difficult after WeWork." A commercial real estate company that provides scalable shared workspaces for technology startups, WeWork has been in turmoil since it filed its public-offering paperwork in August 2019. The coworking company cut its valuation to as low as $10 billion from $47 billion, removed its CEO, and indefinitely delayed its initial public offering. Private Equity Skeptics "The first thing investors would do is come in and say, … ‘Why are you not another WeWork?'" Milton said. "What ended up happening is that investors said, ‘We want more clarity, we want more transparency.' It kind of changed, where all the investors want you to be public right now." Going public at such an early stage has risks, said Mike Ramsey, an analyst with Gartner Inc. who covers electrification and autonomous vehicle technology. "While it opens up more fundraising opportunities, it also requires financial disclosures that might not paint a great picture," Ramsey told FreightWaves. "It also opens a company to much more scrutiny in …
