- China Southern Airlines on Tuesday rolled out an 'all you can fly' pass, becoming the latest in a fleet of cash-strapped carriers to join a promotional craze that analysts say has helped revive a coronavirus-ravaged air travel market. The global aviation industry is keenly eyeing China as a pilot for air travel recovery trends, as the country reopened its economy months earlier than other places after managing to bring the pandemic mostly under control - at least for now.

Chinese airlines resort to short-term debt for lifeline as coronavirus batters global aviation industry
- Major Chinese airlines have been resorting to short-term financing to stay afloat after their revenues all but stopped amid travel restrictions aimed at containing the deadly coronavirus pandemic. The debt burden among carriers globally is expected to surge by 28 per cent by the end of this year after the pandemic brought demand for air travel to a virtual halt.Mainland China's three largest airlines " Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines " and their parent companies have issued an unprecedented 90.5 billion yuan (US$12.7 billion) worth of short-term notes since January 23, the day when Wuhan, the epicentre of the original outbreak, went into lockdown, according to data tracked by the South China Morning Post.Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines and its parent had issued 47.7 billion yuan of super short-term commercial paper (SCP) " which usually mature within nine months or less " the largest amount among the big three airlines in that period. Coupons for most of those notes were well below 2 per cent, except for a 2.7 billion yuan 269-day bond that was priced at 2.14 per cent."The increase of debt is unavoidable, the most urgent thing is to survive," said Lei Zheng, founder and president of the Institute for Aviation Research. "Some airlines are not even able to borrow money."The frequent short-term note issuance of Chinese carriers comes as global airlines struggle to stay afloat after fleets were grounded amid travel restrictions imposed to help stop the spread of Covid-19.China's three biggest carriers recorded their steepest quarterly losses in the first quarter since the global financial crisis. They are expected to lose US$314 billion in revenue this year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). China's airlines poised for post-coronavirus 'revenge travelling'Governments across the world have stepped in to provide US$123 billion in financial aid to airlines in the past few months. However, it is something of a double-edged sword as most of this exposes the airlines to higher debt risks. Airline debt is expected to balloon to US$550 billion by year-end, IATA said last week."A tough future is ahead of us," said Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of the Montreal-based IATA. "After surviving the crisis, recovering to financial health will be the next challenge for many airlines."China Southern and China Eastern last month warned that their new borrowing had accounted for, respectively, 23.9 per cent and 28.9 per cent of their net assets as of the end of 2019."The big three airlines' interest rate is lower, they are relatively stable in terms of debt quality," said You Luya, an analyst at Bank of Communications International. "But buying bonds of other carriers would be risky as the outlook for the industry for the next five years is unclear."Sichuan Airlines and Xiamen Airlines, smaller Chinese carriers, have issued nine and seven batches of SCP since January 23, respectively, worth 5.1 billion yuan and 3.3 billion yuan, according to the Post's calculations."In the post Covid-19 era, operating costs of airlines will increase as they need to pay interest for more debt," said Lei at the Institute of Aviation Research. "Because many of these borrowings are in the form of short-term bonds, they may need to continue to borrow more money to pay them back."This article originally appeared in the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the most authoritative voice reporting on China and Asia for more than a century. Delta's 1Q was bad, but it will get worse for US airlines
- The biggest and most profitable U.S. airline just posted its first quarterly loss in more than five years. Now things are going to get really bad. Delta Air Lines Inc. reported Wednesday that it lost $534 million in the first three months of the year, when it suffered a glancing blow from the coronavirus pandemic during March. For most of the first quarter, the virus seemed like an abstraction to many Americans. Sure, it sounded dire, but it was an ocean away. Life in the U.S. unfolded normally. The economy was humming, people took business trips and leisure flights, planes were nearly full. Since then, the virus brought restrictions on travel and stoked fear of being trapped in a flying aluminum tube while sharing recycled air with people who might be infected. Travel has plunged about 95%. Delta's first-quarter revenue dropped 18% from a year ago. The airline forecast a much grimmer picture for the second quarter, when the full impact of the global pandemic will be felt. Revenue is expected to plunge 90% for Delta, and things will likely to look just as bleak or worse for its competitors. It could be a long time before travel returns to pre-outbreak levels. “Whether it's three years or two years or four years is anyone's guess,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. Here are some vital signs to watch in the airline industry: ___ TRAFFIC HAS VANISHED If there is one chart that captures the implosion of the U.S. airline industry, it might be the number of people screened each day at the nation's airports by the Transportation Security Administration. About 2.3 million people passed through security checkpoints on March 1, unchanged from the same day last year. The numbers careened sharply lower from that point on, plunging below 100,000 by early April — a drop of about...

Delta loses $534 million in 1Q; much bigger losses looming
- Delta Air Lines, the biggest and most profitable U.S. airline, lost $534 million in the first quarter, a setback that will appear trivial when the full force of the pandemic is revealed in the current quarter. Delta warned Wednesday that revenue during the April-through-June quarter, typically a period of harried travel, will plummet by 90% compared with last year, when there were no government travel restrictions and flights were full. “These are truly unprecedented times for all of us," CEO Ed Bastian said. Delta is the first U.S. carrier to detail the damage that began to emerge in at the tail end of the first quarter, although United Airlines said Monday that it would record a pretax loss of $2.1 billion, confirming what most had suspected. The focus now at Delta and other airlines is to hunker down, cut costs, and borrow billions of dollars needed to ride out the pandemic. The fate of Delta and other airlines will depend on whether that is a matter of months, or years. Industry leaders just weeks ago talked of a slump that would be followed by a sharp rebound once the public felt that the outbreak was under control. They're now bracing for a much more painful and drawn out recovery. Flights within the United States in the past week have averaged about 12 passengers each, according to trade group Airlines for America. And there are already 75% fewer flights than is typical. Delta is now paying out more in refunds for cancelled flights than it receives from new bookings. At the end of March, it was burning through $100 million a day, though it hopes to cut that rate in half before July. With passenger traffic roughly 5% of year-ago levels, Delta is taking an ax to its schedule, cutting passenger-carrying capacity in the second quarter by 85%, with the deepest...

Pandemic has set the number of air travelers back decades
- The number of Americans getting on airplanes has sunk to a level not seen in more than 60 years as people shelter in their homes to avoid catching or spreading the new coronavirus. The Transportation Security Administration screened 94,931 people on Wednesday, a drop of 96% from a year ago and the second straight day under 100,000. The official tally of people who passed through TSA checkpoints exaggerates the number of travelers – if that is possible – because it includes some airline crew members and people still working at shops inside airport security perimeters. Historical daily numbers only go back so far, but the nation last averaged fewer than 100,000 passengers a day in 1954, according to figures from trade group Airlines for America. It was the dawn of the jet age. The de Havilland Comet, the first commercial jetliner, was just a few years old, and Boeing was running test flights with the jet that would become the iconic 707. As air travel became safer and more affordable, the passenger numbers grew nearly every year until 2001. There was no commercial air travel in the U.S. for several days after the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and people were slow to get back on planes — U.S. passenger traffic didn't grow again until 2003. It could be longer this time. Polling firm Public Opinion Strategies said that fewer than half the Americans it surveyed about 10 days ago say they will get on a plane within six months of the spread of the virus flattening. A Stifel Nicolaus analyst estimated that air travel demand won't return to pre-outbreak levels until the middle of next year under the best outcome, and it's likely to be later. TSA, which was created after the 9/11 attacks, has been chronicling the plunge in air traffic, posting numbers on how many people its officers screen each day. On March 1, it...

The government of the southern province of Hainan, where HNA [HNAIRC.UL] is based, is in talks to take control of the group and sell off its airline assets, Bloomberg said on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Chinese airlines hit by slides in demand on routes to Hong Kong, Taiwan
- China's three biggest airlines saw double-digit declines in demand on their so-called regional routes in September, as protests in Hong Kong and Beijing's travel restrictions to Taiwan took their toll. Two of them, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have also aggressively cut capacity on those routes to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan - routes which account for about 5% of their revenue. China Eastern said demand on its regional routes, as measured by revenue passenger kilometres, tumbled by nearly a quarter in September from the same period a year earlier, while China Southern slid 21.1% and Air China fell 15.7%.

China's top airlines brace for smaller profits on slower demand, weak yuan
- China's top three airlines are bracing for a further margin squeeze as softer travel demand pressures passenger yields and a weakening yuan currency inflates costs, analysts said, as many of them slashed their annual profit forecasts for the carriers. The outlook revision - for which analysts also cited an economic slowdown amid a U.S.-China trade war and fears of rising oil prices - comes after China Southern Airlines, Air China and China Eastern Airlines turned in lower net profits for the January-June period last week, erasing first-quarter gains. China Southern, the country's largest carrier by passenger numbers, posted a 20.9% year-on-year drop in profit to 1.69 billion yuan ($238 million), while China Eastern posted a 14.9% drop to 1.94 billion yuan.
