Asia Today: Beijing reopening parks in easing of virus rules
- BANGKOK (AP) — Beijing will open public parks to visitors over the five-day May 1 holiday but at 30% capacity as coronavirus cases subside in the country where the pandemic began. Large-scale group activities remain on hold and visitors must book tickets in advance online, according to Gao Dawei, deputy director of the Beijing Gardening and Greening Bureau. Beijing on Thursday downgraded its level of emergency response to the virus from first to second tier, but temperature checks and social distancing remain in force and key tourist sites such as the ancient Forbidden City, past home to China’s emperors, remain closed to the public. China on Friday reported 12 new cases of the virus, six of them brought from overseas, and no new deaths for the 16th day. It has reported a total of 4,633 deaths from the virus among about 83,000 cases, mostly in the central city of Wuhan. Most recent cases reported in China have been among travelers arriving from abroad or in a northeastern province near the border with Russia. Across the country, 599 patients remain under treatment for the virus. Just under 1,000 people are under medical observation because they tested positive but don't show symptoms or have symptoms but testing hasn't confirmed the infection. In other developments around the Asia-Pacific region: — UN CHIEF PRAISES SOUTH KOREA: U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday he hopes many countries will follow the “remarkable example” of South Korea, which he said has been “extremely successful” in addressing the coronavirus pandemic and is planning to tackle climate change in its recovery. As its cases have declined, he said, South Korea has presented plans for “a very ambitious green deal," including a ban on new coal-fired plants and a...

Virus-related delays for Universal parks in Florida, Japan
- ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The company that owns Universal theme parks around the world said it's delaying construction on a fourth theme park in Florida and that the opening of a Nintendo-themed park in Japan will be pushed back by a few months in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said Thursday that the company was delaying construction on its fourth park at Orlando Universal Resort. The Epic Universe theme park was announced last year to great fanfare. It also will push back the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Roberts said. “There is no doubt that our theme parks will reopen,” Roberts said on an earnings report call. “And when they do, I believe they will benefit from strong pent-up demand.” The company's U.S. theme parks have been closed since mid-March when lockdown orders began to be issued by governors and mayors across the U.S. in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. Company officials on Thursday gave no indication when they would reopen or when furloughed workers would be able to return to work. Theme park revenue for the company in the first quarter of 2020 dropped by almost a third to $869 million compared to the same time period in 2019 when revenue was $1.2 billion. Comcast purchased NBCUniversal almost a decade ago. During that time, company officials say, Comcast has put more money into theme parks than any other part of the company. That investment had paid for Harry Potter-themed lands and rides based on other franchises, such as “Fast & Furious.” The fourth park in Orlando will be the biggest investment the Comcast NBCUniversal has made in its theme park business. Originally scheduled to open in 2023, it will have a park, hotels, restaurants and shops. Comcast...

Comcast profit slides as pandemic hits movies, theme parks
- Comcast’s net income slid in the first three months of the year as the coronavirus pandemic forced it to shut down its theme parks and its movies were kept out of shuttered theaters. Comcast also reported Thursday that it lost 409,000 cable TV customers, the biggest source of the company’s profits, as cord-cutting accelerated. That’s already more than half the 671,000 customers it lost in all of 2019. But it added 477,000 internet customers, which it said was its best quarterly number in more than a decade. It came as U.S. workplace shutdowns began in March and a mass work-from-home migration underscored the role home internet plays in Americans' lives. Americans are increasingly opting for cheaper streaming video providers that are delivered over the internet, like Netflix, which both benefits and harms Comcast's business as an internet and traditional TV provider. Competition in online video is also increasing with new entrants like Disney and Apple. Comcast's own streaming service, Peacock, will launch nationwide in July, with free and paid versions. In the Philadelphia company's NBCUniversal arm, revenue slid 7% and a key profit measure plunged by 25% as the Universal Studios parks closed and closed movie theaters hurt box office. It is experimenting with alternatives, releasing “Trolls World Tour” digitally in April, the current quarter. Comcast said it was a success. Analysts expect ad revenues on NBC and the company’s cable channels to decline this year, especially as the Olympics, a big ratings draw, have been postponed until 2021. Ad revenue in the first quarter dipped 2.2% for cable channels and was nearly unchanged for the broadcast channels, NBC and Telemundo. But the outbreak's impact only started being felt in the U.S. at the end of the...

Spain's economy shrinks, oil looms large with oversupply
- The outbreak of the coronavirus has dealt a shock to the global economy with unprecedented speed. Following are developments Thursday related to the global economy, the work place and the spread of the virus. ________________________ CENTRAL GOVERNMENT & BANKS: Nations are continuing attempts to reopen businesses. But evidence of the economic damage from the virus is widespread. — Spain’s economy shrunk by 5.2% in the first three months of the year. That breaks with 25 consecutive periods of positive economic activity going back to 2013. Spain’s National Institute of Statistics said Thursday that the drop in economic activity came after 0.4% growth in the final quarter of 2019. The measurement was based on preliminary data. — Ukrainian authorities have opened all 872 food markets in the country as the government prepares to gradually lift a lockdown enacted on March 12. The decision to reopen the markets comes after a series protests all around Ukraine, during which entrepreneurs and farmers bemoaned the dire economic straits the lockdown has put them in. Ukrainians will be allowed to go to the markets while wearing masks and observing social distancing. Two inspectors will be assigned to each market to make sure the rules are followed and to check visitors’ temperatures. — Greece’s prime minister is outlining steps his center-right government is taking to aid the economy during the pandemic. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced plans this week to ease lockdown restrictions over two months, starting May 4. Greece is widely expected to follow other European countries into recession in 2020. Government estimates say the contraction will be between 4% and 8% of gross domestic product. But financial sector estimates say the downtown could be...

Albuquerque mayor wants businesses reopened with precautions
- SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The mayor of New Mexico's largest city said Tuesday that he favors reopening nearly all businesses with precautions such as reduced indoor crowds, face coverings and COVID-19 screenings for workers. In a town hall-style meeting by phone, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said he hopes to see the restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus lifted in stages to allow nonessential businesses to start reopening within weeks if infections keep leveling off. “We want to have all businesses open,” said Keller, a Democrat. “But how they open is important.” The presentation offered clues about a possible statewide approach to ending closures. Keller said he is talking with Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's office as she decides on a strategy that guards against a resurgence of infections. Keller said state orders should trump any city decisions. Shopping malls and businesses like barber shops and tattoo parlors where people are close together may pose special challenges, said Keller, adding that authorities are watching Colorado and Georgia for practical lessons as they restore nonessential areas of the economy. “We might open up retail, but we might not open up Coronado Mall," Keller said, referring to New Mexico's most prominent indoor shopping center. In an effort to bolster employment, Albuquerque has accelerated $70 million in construction projects that include road work, several community centers and a new public library — a burst of stimulus underwritten by the state. Legislative leaders are anticipating the largest budget deficit in state history that could quickly deplete $1.3 billion in financial reserves. Government income is expected to nosedive as the pandemic and stay-at-home orders take a toll on tax revenue...
