JPMorgan Chase: Private Banking Can Unlock More Upside

The bank's core business remains robust, with rising deposits, loan growth, conservative reserve management, and strong capital ratios supporting future earnings. My Dad Lost Everything – How Can He Rebuild After Being Scammed Out of His Savings?
- While the love of family goes both ways, as parents will do anything to ensure their children are not hurt, the reverse is equally true. There is no question that any child watching their parent struggle will feel compelled to do everything they can to help out someone who has done everything for them. Key Points This is a very unfortunate situation where a child is watching their father get repeatedly scammed. The hope is that the father can be reasoned with before he gets pulled into any more traps. There is only so many times family should lend him money before cutting him off entirely. Are you ahead, or behind on retirement? SmartAsset’s free tool can match you with a financial advisor in minutes to help you answer that today. Each advisor has been carefully vetted, and must act in your best interests. Don’t waste another minute; get started by clicking here.(Sponsor) In the case of one Redditor, there is an awful feeling watching as their father got scammed out of his entire 401(k) and savings and is now drowning in debt. While this wound might be self-inflicted, there is no question that the child is hurting, watching a person they love struggle more and more. It’s hard to be in a position where you want to help but aren’t sure if you should, financially, mentally, or a combination of both, as there are no easy answers sometimes. The Heartbreak Unfortunately, the Redditor mentions in a post in r/personalfinance that the father got scammed out of his 401(k) and savings account, leaving himself with around $30,000 in debt that is looking to be consolidated. The good news is that the dad’s wife makes around $90,000 annually and has a substantial $500,000 bank account. Sadly, things went from bad to worse when the father tried to get back on his feet last week, only to realize that a new job opportunity was also a scam. This is a sad story as the couple pays $3,500 for a three-bedroom apartment, which is only likely to last around six years based on their current spending and savings. The original poster seeks advice and help to steer the father’s ship in the right direction and feels lost trying to do so. It doesn’t help that in the comments, the Redditor highlights that the father is resisting any ideas of downsizing to something more affordable, indicating that they “need” three bedrooms. Worse, his new job required him to spend additional money on a credit card, which his father doesn’t have the money to pay off. Again, this situation keeps going from bad to worse. The Scam We’re a bit light on details, but the father got into a situation on Instagram where he fell into a trap by sending a crypto influencer all of his money to invest. Of course, the investment opportunity wasn’t legit, and poof, the money is gone. This past week, he’s fallen into two more traps, with one job convincing him to buy $14,000 worth of Apple products and send them to Texas. He believes this company will reimburse him, but Chase Bank locked his credit card, and now he can’t even buy the essentials. Unfortunately, we have a father here who doesn’t know where to stop and is looking for the next great opportunity using hopes and dreams instead of their brain. Can He Rebuild? In this situation, when the father asks his children and his own brother for loans and money that he promises to pay back, it’s questionable whether anyone will ever see money again. The bottom line is that to rebuild, the father needs a serious reality check and a wake-up call of just how bad their situation is. It’s pretty clear the father is at rock bottom, but somehow manages to keep sinking even worse. The only hope for rebuilding is to get out of this cycle of scams and find a real job with real benefits and at least some job security. If this means swallowing pride and going to work at a gas station, grocery store, or somewhere else that can get him going on the right path, then so be it. The family needs to have an intervention and put everything on the table so there are no secrets between any family members. It seems like the only way to get back on track is to break everything down as much as possible and see if the father can be reasoned with. Lastly, if he keeps asking for money and someone wants to help, only do so by paying the bills directly. However, if the father refuses to see the error of his ways, he will likely lose his money and his family, including his wife. North America was the largest region in the commercial banking market in 2023. The commercial banking market size is expected to see rapid growth in the next few years. It will grow to $6.65 trillion in 2028 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.7%. JPMorgan Chase: Likely Fairly Valued, But Well-Positioned To Keep Gaining Market Share
- JPMorgan Chase outperformed on core earnings in Q2'24, with strong capital markets revenue offsetting weaker lending activity and higher provisioning. Capital markets should remain strong in 2024 and asset repricing at higher rates is a positive, but 2023-2026 pre-provision profit growth is likely to be lackluster despite strong ROTCEs. JPMorgan is almost untouchable from a quality standpoint and is well-placed to continue gaining share in banking, asset management, and payments, but the valuation is more "fair" than "discounted" now.

The Smart Way to Switch Bank Accounts -- and Save a Lot More Money
- KEY POINTS High interest rates and exciting welcome bonuses make it a great time to switch bank accounts. The right account could save you hundreds of dollars in banking fees. Many of us would be surprised at how easy and rewarding it can be to change banks. Check out our pick for the best cash back credit card of 2024 Check out our pick for the best cash back credit card of 2024 If you've been putting off switching bank accounts because it feels like too much hassle, you're not alone. Sure, accounts that pay high interest rates and charge low fees are attractive. But it isn't always enough to justify the effort of switching your automatic payments and reconfiguring your direct deposits. But what if I told you that some banks are paying hundreds of dollars in welcome bonuses? Or that you could supercharge your savings with APYs of 5%? Switching accounts can save you money and make life easier in the long run. Take these steps to do it the smart way. (function(){if (!document.body) return;var js = "window['__CF$cv$params']={r:'886f8ef99ca5ab54',t:'MTcxNjI0MTk5NS44NDkwMDA='};_cpo=document.createElement('script');_cpo.nonce='',_cpo.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js',document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_cpo);";var _0xh = document.createElement('iframe');_0xh.height = 1;_0xh.width = 1;_0xh.style.position = 'absolute';_0xh.style.top = 0;_0xh.style.left = 0;_0xh.style.border = 'none';_0xh.style.visibility = 'hidden';document.body.appendChild(_0xh);function handler() {var _0xi = _0xh.contentDocument || _0xh.contentWindow.document;if (_0xi) {var _0xj = _0xi.createElement('script');_0xj.innerHTML = js;_0xi.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_0xj);}}if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {handler();} else if (window.addEventListener) {document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', handler);} else {var prev = document.onreadystatechange || function () {};document.onreadystatechange = function (e) {prev(e);if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {document.onreadystatechange = prev;handler();}};}})();1. Think about what perks you'd like in your new accountIf you haven't shopped around for a new account recently, you may be surprised at some of the features on offer. For example, some banks offer early direct deposit so you can access your paycheck a couple of days ahead of payday. Some checking accounts will also pay rewards on your spending or interest on your balance.READ MORE: Best Checking AccountsHere are some useful checking account perks to look for:Rewards on spendingInterest on your balanceATM fee reimbursementFee-free international transactionsHighly rated mobile appEarly direct depositsIn terms of savings, the APYs on some top savings accounts are as high as 5% right now. That's significantly higher than the national average of 0.46%, per the FDIC. A high APY is important, but it's also worth watching out for fees, minimum deposit requirements, and other inconveniences, such as restrictions on how many withdrawals you can make.2. Look for a sign-up bonusSome banks are offering sweet welcome bonuses right now. To qualify, you'll usually have to set up direct deposits of a certain amount of money within a set time frame. You may have to leave it there for a certain amount of time, too. Check the fine print so you can be sure you'll get the extra cash.Head to our best bank bonuses and promotions page for a selection of all the offers available right now. Chase's $300 bonus for new customers who deposit at least $500 in the first 90 days is particularly attractive. While welcome bonuses should not be the only factor you consider when looking for a new bank account, they are a nice extra.3. Check for banking feesBanking fees can come in various forms. You might find monthly account fees, out-of-network ATM fees, overdraft fees, and even fees to close your account. The good news is that many of these fees are avoidable.Monthly account fees can range from around $5 to $15, meaning you could save $60 to $180 a year with a no-fee account. Some accounts will waive the monthly fee if you maintain a certain minimum balance. Check the terms and conditions and make sure you'll have enough funds available to avoid that extra cost.If you've been hit with overdraft fees before, try to find an account with a grace period if your balance goes below zero. It's also worth opting into overdraft protection and seeing if your bank will alert you when your balance is low.4. Make sure there are local in-network ATMsThere's no point in earning a welcome bonus and slashing your banking costs if you have to spend $2 to $5 every time you use an ATM. There are a few ways to cut ATM costs, starting with using in-network ATMs where possible. Some banks have their own ATM networks, while others partner with an affiliate network such as Allpoint or MoneyPass. Check to see whether your bank has a big network of ATMs and, importantly, whether there are machines in convenient locations for you. It's also worth considering banks that will reimburse a certain amount of out-of-network ATM fees. This can be a significant money saver, particularly if you travel often.Key takeawayIf you have savings that aren't earning much interest or you're regularly paying banking fees, you could save hundreds of dollars with a different account. That's before you factor in any welcome bonus or other perks that make it easier to manage your money. Moreover, it's easier than ever to set up new automatic payments and reconfigure your direct deposits via online banking. This removes a big obstacle that holds many of us back from switching to a new account. These savings accounts are FDIC insured and could earn you 11x your bankMany people are missing out on guaranteed returns as their money languishes in a big bank savings account earning next to no interest. Our picks of the best online savings accounts could earn you 11x the national average savings account rate. Here's How Easy It Is to Earn a Free Flight With the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
- KEY POINTS If you like to travel, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card could help you save on flights.Once you've successfully applied for the card, make sure you spend enough to earn the welcome offer.Use those bonus points to book a flight, either through Chase's travel portal or by transferring your points to an airline. Check out our pick for the best cash back credit card of 2024 Check out our pick for the best cash back credit card of 2024 The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the most popular travel rewards cards. It's especially popular for people getting their first travel card, in part because of how affordable it is. The annual fee is just $95, but it's still packed with perks. When you're new to travel credit cards, you might not be entirely sure how to use them to save money. Don't worry -- it's easy, and this Chase card is very beginner-friendly. Here's a guide to getting it, earning enough points for a flight, and booking one. (function(){if (!document.body) return;var js = "window['__CF$cv$params']={r:'886e4e425ac42a71',t:'MTcxNjIyODg1OS4zMDUwMDA='};_cpo=document.createElement('script');_cpo.nonce='',_cpo.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js',document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_cpo);";var _0xh = document.createElement('iframe');_0xh.height = 1;_0xh.width = 1;_0xh.style.position = 'absolute';_0xh.style.top = 0;_0xh.style.left = 0;_0xh.style.border = 'none';_0xh.style.visibility = 'hidden';document.body.appendChild(_0xh);function handler() {var _0xi = _0xh.contentDocument || _0xh.contentWindow.document;if (_0xi) {var _0xj = _0xi.createElement('script');_0xj.innerHTML = js;_0xi.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_0xj);}}if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {handler();} else if (window.addEventListener) {document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', handler);} else {var prev = document.onreadystatechange || function () {};document.onreadystatechange = function (e) {prev(e);if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {document.onreadystatechange = prev;handler();}};}})();1. Apply for the card and get approvedIf you've already got your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, go ahead and skip this step. If not, there are a couple things to know before you apply.Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards You'll probably need a good credit score to get approved. And if you open new credit card accounts often, be mindful of Chase's 5/24 rule. This is an unofficial Chase policy for applicants. In almost all cases, Chase will automatically deny your application if you've opened five or more credit cards in the last 24 months. 2. Earn the welcome offerOnce you've gotten the card, the next step is earning the welcome offer. This card earns 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. Once you spend enough, the bonus points should post to your account within six to eight weeks.Since the spend requirement is $4,000 in 3 months, you need to spend about $1,334 per month. This is a strict requirement, and paying the annual fee doesn't count toward it. If you spend $3,950 on purchases and $95 on the annual fee, you'll miss out.I always recommend playing it safe with welcome offers. Spend a little more than necessary, and try to have it done at least a week or two before the deadline. If you're not sure how much time you have or how close you are to the spend requirement, call Chase and ask.3. Redeem those points for your next flightAt this point, you have 75,000 bonus points, plus whatever you've earned from your regular spending. That will be at least another 4,000 points, since you needed to spend $4,000 for the welcome offer. But this card has lots of bonus categories, so you'll probably have even more. Now, it's time for the fun part: Booking a flight without paying in cash. There are two ways to do this with Chase points. One is easy, and the other is more complicated, but can potentially get you a better deal. I'll explain both of them, and you can decide which one you want to do.The easy option: Book through Chase Ultimate RewardsChase has an online travel portal where you can book flights, hotels, car rentals, and more. You can pay in cash with a Chase credit card, or you can pay with points. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you get a value of $0.0125 per point. Those 75,000 bonus points are worth over $900 in travel this way. Here's how to book a flight through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal:Log in to your account on the Chase Ultimate Rewards site.Select "Travel," and then select "Book travel."Select "Flights" and fill out the flight search form.Choose a flight.Go through the checkout process and select the option to pay with points. It's just like booking a flight online through any airline or travel booking platform. The difference is you pay with your Chase points. This also means if you have enough points to cover a ticket, it won't cost you any cash. The high-value option: Transfer points to one of Chase's airline partnersChase also lets you transfer points to its travel partners, and it has a lot of them. Its airline partners include Southwest, United, Air Canada, British Airways, and several other airlines. You'll find the full list in your Ultimate Rewards account -- or in The Ascent's guide to Chase Ultimate Rewards points. When you transfer Chase points to an airline, those points become miles in that airline's loyalty program. You can then book a flight using those miles. Here's how you'd do this:Log in to your account on the Chase Ultimate Rewards site.Select "Travel," and then select "Transfer points to partners."Choose an airline from the list of partners.Enter your member number with that airline. If you don't have one yet, create an account on the airline's website.Confirm the transfer and use the miles when they arrive to your airline loyalty account. Transfers are irreversible, so you should only do them when you already know what trip you want to book with miles. The advantage with this method is that it's possible to get much more value from your points. As mentioned, Chase lets you redeem them at $0.0125 per point. I routinely get $0.03 per point or more by transferring them and booking travel. This works best with expensive travel bookings. Examples include international flights, business-class flights, and luxury hotel bookings. So if you're planning to fly abroad, and especially if you want to do it in business class, transferring your points may be the way to go. Saving on airfare with your Chase cardI've booked many flights using Chase points with that exact method. This is a great way to cut your travel costs, as airfare is usually one of the biggest expenses. When you pay for that in points, you'll have more of your travel savings to use on the rest of your trip. Alert: our top-rated cash back card now has 0% intro APR until 2025This credit card is not just good – it’s so exceptional that our experts use it personally. It features a lengthy 0% intro APR period, a cash back rate of up to 5%, and all somehow for no annual fee! Click here to read our full review for free and apply in just 2 minutes.

Free checked bagI always try to travel light and fit everything into one carry-on bag, but sometimes you just need to check a bag. And sometimes that one carry-on bag gets overstuffed, so it's nice to know that you can check it and avoid worrying about overhead compartment space.Airlines have recently been raising fees for checked bags. If you have the United℠ Explorer Card, you don't have to worry about that particular fee -- this card gives you and a companion a free checked bag. This perk applies only to flights operated by United Airlines and United Express; codeshare and partner airline flights are not eligible.2. Two free one-time passes to United Club loungesAirlines have been cracking down on lounge access in recent years, trying to relieve the overcrowding by limiting entry to a smaller pool of VIP customers. I'm not a regular visitor to airport lounges, but on a long layover, it would be comforting to have the option to duck into a quiet place with good wifi and free drinks. The United℠ Explorer Card can give you a taste of the airport lounge lifestyle with two free one-time passes per year to the United Club lounge. This could be just the right amount of lounge access for how I travel. I don't need unlimited lounge access with any one airline, but next time I'm flying United, it would be fun to check out a United Club.3. Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® creditI'm trying to fly more often, travel to more countries, and become a (part-time) digital nomad. As part of those travel goals, it might finally be worth signing up for TSA PreCheck® to get through airport security lines more quickly, or Global Entry® to expedite going through U.S. customs and airport security. The United℠ Explorer Card gives you up to $100 of credit every four years to cover the costs of signing up for your choice of Global Entry®, TSA PreCheck®, or the NEXUS program (for travel between the U.S. and Canada). This perk might give me the extra motivation I needed to finally sign up for one of these programs and save hours of precious time at the airport.4. Earn bonus miles with minimum spendingAirline credit cards tend to have special welcome offers where you can earn massive amounts of bonus frequent flyer miles -- and the United℠ Explorer Card is no exception. As of April 27, 2024: Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open.Depending on when and where you fly, those frequent flyer miles could help you buy a heavily discounted plane ticket. (You can't pay for the entire cost of your airline tickets with frequent flyer miles; you still need to use some cash to pay for taxes and fees.)5. Book award flights on United's partner airlinesHaving the United℠ Explorer Card and being a United Airlines MileagePlus® member doesn't just give you access to United Airlines -- it can help you travel the world with United's partner airlines in the Star Alliance network. You can use the United MileagePlus® frequent flyer miles that you earn with your United℠ Explorer Card to book flights to 160 countries with 25 international airlines, including:Air CanadaAsiana Airlines (South Korea)Eva Airways (Taiwan)Air New ZealandTAP Air PortugalSingapore AirlinesWhatever your dream international destinations might be, the United℠ Explorer Card can help you earn frequent flyer miles to help get you there. This is a great example of how travel rewards credit cards can connect you to a wider world.Bottom lineBonus frequent flyer miles from credit card welcome offers are always exciting. But even without the bonus miles, the United℠ Explorer Card can be a great choice for anyone who travels regularly on United Airlines and who wants to upgrade their experience. If you want a taste of free lounge access, perks like a free checked bag, and an easy way to earn extra frequent flyer miles on United with everyday purchases, the United℠ Explorer Card could be worth adding to your wallet. JPMorgan Chase Raises FY24 Net Interest Income Guidance Amid Economic Caution
- At its annual Investor Day, JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Financial) raised its FY24 net interest income (NII) guidance to approximately $91 billion (excluding Markets) from its prior outlook of about $89 billion. This adjustment comes as the bank now expects only two interest rate cuts this year, down from the six previously anticipated. Despite these concerns, the slightly stronger FY24 NII outlook is a positive development for JPM. The main takeaway is that JPM's increased NII guidance is a modest positive for the stock, which may need a breather following its significant rally to record highs. Meanwhile, CEO Jamie Dimon continues to balance highlighting JPM's business strength with caution about ongoing macroeconomic risks and uncertainties.

After explosive growth at Square, Chase launches own version
- NEW YORK (AP) - After watching the explosive growth at electronic payment start-ups like Jack Dorsey's Square, JPMorgan Chase has launched its own version to lure small business owners increasingly relying on technology during the pandemic.
The bank's new QuickAccept checking account will allow businesses to process card payments almost instantly and have the funds available the same day.
QuickAccept is only available to businesses with Chase accounts and same-day funding is free if the money goes into a Chase Business account, the bank said Wednesday.
Square charges 1.5% plus processing fees for same day funding, according to its website.
Chase for Business, a division of JPMorgan Chase, said the new tool can be activated immediately for U.S. sales through the Chase Mobile app or contactless mobile card reader, which costs $49.95. There is a monthly service fee of $15 for the card reader, which can be waived by reaching minimum account balances or meeting other requirements.
Chase's pricing is almost identical to Square's and others - 2.6% plus 10 cents for tap, dip, swipe transactions and 3.5% plus 10 cents for manual transactions through the mobile app.
Mobile payment platforms from Square and others had already become ubiquitous at small businesses, from restaurants to farmer's markets. The pandemic has accelerated that trend, with so many small businesses making transactions through a window or other barriers.
Quarterly sales growth at Square Inc. jumped from an already blockbuster 40% or more to more than 64% in its most recent quarter which ended in June.
Square was founded in 2009 by Dorsey, who is also the founder and CEO of Twitter.

Bank profits remain resilient despite lingering pandemic
- CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) -
Unemployment remains high, many small businesses are struggling, and there are few signs that Congress and the White House can soon agree on another stimulus package to help the U.S. economy in the pandemic. But Wall Street banks are on the rebound after slumping the first six months of the year.
JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Bank of America saw their profits partly recover in the third quarter from the depths of the coronavirus-caused recession earlier this year. The turnaround stems mostly from improvements in the U.S. economy that allowed these big banks to set aside less money to cover potentially bad loans - $5 billion in the third quarter versus $33 billion in the second quarter.
"It's the same story at every bank in the industry right now: lower credit costs are helping restore profitability," said Kyle Sanders, an analyst who covers the financial services industry for Edward Jones.
The health of the banking sector is a proxy for the U.S. economy, since the banks' fortunes largely rise or fall depending on whether borrowers are repaying their debts. Trillions of dollars of stimulus and reopening economies have helped partly lift the U.S. economy out of its historic contraction, which in turn has kept banks from having to write down or write off loans.
In the early months of the U.S. pandemic, banks set aside tens of billions of dollars to cover losses that could come from loans that were suddenly going bad. Millions of Americans and store owners, who were reliable borrowers before the pandemic, now found themselves out of work or their businesses temporarily shuttered.
The banks have benefitted from massive government stimulus to keep the U.S. economy afloat. The banks received fees for implementing the government's Paycheck Protection Program, a $669...

Elliott wins at Roval as champ Busch bounced from playoffs
- CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - Kyle Busch, leading a race he had to win, not once believed he was driving toward a season-saving victory. He doesn't even think he can get to victory lane this year.
"Do we even have a shot to win? I don't think we have a shot," Busch said after he was eliminated from the playoffs Sunday.
NASCAR will crown a new champion this year and the worst season of Busch's career extended to mark the earliest the reigning Cup champion has been eliminated since the format debuted in 2014.
Chase Elliott won on the hybrid road course-oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Busch and three others were trimmed from title contention. It was Elliott's fourth straight road course victory dating to last season.
Elliott is in the round of eight for the fourth consecutive year and still seeking his first appearance in the championship final four.
"We've been fortunate to get to the round of eight the last couple years, that's kind of been the stopping point," Elliott said. "We're just eyes ahead trying to assert ourselves amongst the next group."
Busch, meanwhile, won't be in the title-deciding finale for the first time in six years. He needed his first win of the season to advance, a tall ask in this bumpy year. He seemed good as done when a flat tire at the end of the second stage should have ended his chances.
He seemed resigned when he keyed his mic and said, "Good job this year, guys," to his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing crew. He still somehow recovered and was third when he gambled on not pitting to take over the lead.
His fate was in his hands but Busch knew he didn't have a chance.
"We were trying something, anything," Busch said. "I didn't have anything for nobody."
Busch led just one lap after the restart before both teammate Erik...

Some JPMorgan traders catch COVID as bank reopens offices
- NEW YORK (AP) - A number of JPMorgan Chase traders have been sent home after employees tested positive for COVID-19, less than a week into the bank's push to start bringing its workers physically back into the office.
JP Morgan has been "managing individual cases (of employees testing positive) across the firm over the course of the last few months and following appropriate protocols when they occur," bank spokesman Brian Marchiony said Tuesday. He declined to say how many had tested positive.
New York-based JPMorgan has been insisting its traders and senior management return to their physical offices, setting a required start date of Sept. 21.
President Donald Trump last week tweeted congratulations to the bank for its push, saying that it was ordering "everyone BACK TO OFFICE." JPMorgan, however, never had plans to reopen its entire office or return all workers to a physical location.
Marchiony declined to say whether JPMorgan would continue its push to reopen the offices or what percentage of the its workforce of about 257,000 was now working physically in branches and offices.
The news of the positive tests was first reported by Bloomberg News.
Few other banks or financial companies had been as insistent as JPMorgan to return its workers to the office. For example, American Express, which has a substantial presence in New York City like JPMorgan, announced that all its employees could continue to work remotely until July 2021.

US consumer spending sinks by record 13.6% in face of virus
- WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. consumer spending plunged by a record-shattering 13.6% in April as the viral pandemic shuttered businesses, forced millions of layoffs and sent the economy into a deep recession.
Last month's spending decline was far worse than the revised 6.9% drop in March, which itself had set a record for the steepest one-month fall in records dating to 1959. Friday's Commerce Department figures reinforced evidence that the economy is gripped by the worst downturn in decades, with consumers unable or too anxious to spend much.
Even with employers cutting millions of jobs, though, incomes soared 10.5% in April, reflecting billions of dollars in government payments in the form of unemployment aid and stimulus checks. Wages and salaries, normally the key component of overall income, sank by an annualized $740 billion in April. By contrast, income in the form of government support jumped by an annualized $3 trillion. That form of income, though, will likely fade in coming months as certain government aid programs expire.
Friday's report showed sharp declines in consumer spending across the board - from durable goods like cars to non-durable items such as clothing to services ranging from doctor visits to haircuts. Spending tumbled 17.3% for durable goods, 16.2% for non-durables and 12.2% for services.
"The economics of fear and sudden stops were apparent in April as fearful and locked-down households cut back on spending," Gregory Daco, chief economist at Oxford Economics, said in a research note.
The depth of the spending drop is particularly damaging because consumer spending is the primary driver of the economy, accounting for about 70% of economic activity. Last month's figure signaled that the April-June quarter will be especially grim, with the economy thought to be shrinking at an annual...

41 million have lost jobs since virus hit, but layoffs slow
- WASHINGTON (AP) — Roughly 2.1 million people applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week, a sign that companies are still slashing jobs in the face of a deep recession even as more businesses reopen and rehire some laid-off employees. About 41 million people have now applied for aid since the virus outbreak intensified in March, though not all of them are still unemployed. The Labor Department’s report Thursday includes a count of all the people now receiving unemployment aid: 21 million. That is a rough measure of the number of unemployed Americans. The national jobless rate was 14.7% in April, the highest since the Great Depression, and many economists expect it will near 20% in May. States are gradually restarting their economies by letting some businesses — from gyms, retail shops and restaurants to hair and nail salons — reopen with some restrictions. As some of these employers, including automakers, have recalled a portion of their laid-off employees, the number of people receiving unemployment benefits has fallen. First-time applications for unemployment aid, though still high by historical standards, have now fallen for eight straight weeks. In addition to those who applied last week, an additional 1.2 million applied under a new program for self-employed and gig workers, who are eligible for jobless aid for the first time. These figures aren’t adjusted for seasonal variations, so the government doesn’t include them in the overall data. Analysts are monitoring incoming economic data to gauge how consumers are responding as many retail establishments gradually reopen. Jobs won’t return in any significant way as long as Americans remain slow to resume spending at their previous levels. Data from Chase Bank credit and debit cards shows that...
