IBM Inks Multiyear Hybrid Cloud Deal With Coca-Cola European Enterprises
- Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has signed a multiyear hybrid cloud agreement with IBM Corp. to help streamline its existing IT infrastructure, which is aimed at cutting operating costs and driving additional efficiencies. With the help of IBM (IBM), the world's largest Coca-Cola bottler based on revenue, wants to accelerate its shift to an open hybrid cloud environment to create a platform for standardised business processes, data and technology. The move is designed to reduce its operational expenses, increase IT resiliency and leverage analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) in its daily operations for enhanced business insights and to improve services to its millions of customers. As part of the agreement, IBM will help CCEP (CCEP) in its digital transformation by deploying the IBM public cloud and several large workloads. IBM will also provide CCEP with a consolidated view and single point of control over its entire IT infrastructure."As businesses shift to cloud, we understand that each industry and client has unique business needs in their cloud adoption journey. IBM is excited to take CCEP on this next chapter of their cloud journey delivering on an industry-specific solution as they migrate mission critical workloads to the cloud," said Howard Boville, SVP IBM Cloud. "By selecting IBM for its hybrid cloud environment CCEP is embarking on a journey towards an open and secure cloud architecture driving greater digital advancement."IBM will help CCEP modernize its IT environment by using Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which is expected to provide an open standard, cost-effective platform. IBM's Multicloud Management capability will be used to allow private and public clouds to be integrated and managed from a single dashboard.Shares in IBM, which have climbed 6.6% over the past month, are still down 5.2% year-to-date. (See IBM stock analysis on TipRanks).Argus Research analyst Jim Kelleher at the end of last month upgraded IBM to Buy from Hold with a $155 price target (22% upside potential), as he believes that the company has "turned a corner", adding that legacy parts of the business could remain under pressure."The company's hybrid cloud business is accelerating; the overhang of low-return services contracts has largely run off; and the deferred revenue drag from acquiring Red Hat is lessening,” Kelleher wrote in a note to investors. “Margins are benefiting from the software-heavy business mix, enhanced by Red Hat. And demand from the company's blue chip client base is proving resilient amid the pandemic."The rest of the Street has a cautiously optimistic outlook on the stock with a Moderate Buy analyst consensus. The $138.50 average price target indicates 9% upside potential for the coming 12 months.Related News: Qualcomm Pops 12% In After-Hours On $1.8B Huawei License Deal Logitech Ramps Up Annual Profit Outlook As Q1 Income Leaps 75% IBM Pops 5% in Extended Trading After Quarterly Profit Beats Expectations More recent articles from Smarter Analyst: * Susquehanna Lifts PT on Dick’s Sporting Ahead Of 2Q Results * Casper Sleep Beats 2Q Revenues; Shares Dip Over 10% * Citigroup Doubles Carvana's PT On Higher Sales Bet * Nio Rising 8% On Record-High Quarterly Deliveries; But Street Cautious

Buffett's firm reports nearly $50B loss as investments drop
- OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Warren Buffett’s company reported a nearly $50 billion loss on Saturday because of a huge drop in the paper value of its investments, though the company is still sitting on a huge pile of cash. Berkshire Hathaway Inc. said it lost $49.7 billion, or $30,653 per Class A share, during the first quarter. That's down from last year's profit of $21.66 billion, or $13,209 per Class A share. The biggest factor in the loss was a $54.5 billion loss on the value of Berkshire's investment portfolio as the stock market declined sharply after the coronavirus outbreak began. The year before, Berkshire's investments added $15.5 billion to the company's profits. Buffett has long said Berkshire’s operating earnings offer a better view of quarterly performance because they exclude investments and derivatives, which can vary widely. By that measure, Berkshire’s operating earnings improved to $5.87 billion, or $3,617.62 per Class A share, from $5.56 billion, or $3,387.56 per Class A share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected operating earnings per Class A share of $3,796.90 on average. Berkshire's revenue grew 1 percent to $61.27 billion. Berkshire is sitting on a pile of more than $137 billion cash because Buffett has struggled to find major acquisitions for the company recently On Saturday afternoon, Buffett plans to lead an abbreviated online version of Berkshire's annual meeting without any of the roughly 40,000 shareholders who typically attend. The company shifted to an online meeting and cancelled all the events surrounding the event because of the coronavirus outbreak. Berkshire Hathaway Inc. owns more than 90 companies, including the BNSF railroad and insurance, utility, furniture and jewelry businesses. The company also has major investments in such...

Earnings season is in full swing and uncertainty is certain
- The most active week of the earnings season is on and the rush of quarterly reports Tuesday, 39 in all, captured the maneuvering of companies from almost every sector as they feel their way through an unprecedented economic shockwave. Companies are being affected in different ways but if there's a common theme, it's that the situation was bad in the first quarter, and it's going to get worse. When the coronavirus emerged, the energy sector was already in the midst of a price war ignited by a supply glut as global economic growth slowed. Today, there is almost no place to store oil. Some oil contract holders were forced to pay people to take crude off their hands last week. The price of U.S. crude has plunged 80% this year. On Tuesday, BP PLC reported a quarterly net income equivalent of $628 million. Last year, it was $2.1 billion in the same stretch. Debt reached $51.4 billion in the first quarter, pushing debt-to-capital ratio to an uneasy 36%. Exxon and Chevron report later this week. Those tumbling energy prices are essentially free money for airlines. But only if they're flying. On Tuesday, Southwest posted its first quarterly loss in almost a decade. Delta, the biggest and most profitable U.S. airline, posted its its first quarterly loss in five years last week. Few expect a profitable year. More anticipate a smaller industry, and soon, with furloughs already underway. Air traffic has been reduced to levels last seen in the pre-jet age and Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said Tuesday there is no sign of easing. "Trip cancellations remain at unprecedented levels,” Kelly said. Companies that would theoretically thrive in a self-isolated world are suffering as well. The plunge in business activity and rising costs has offset a surge in home deliveries by UPS. . ..

Japan Medical Assn: Tokyo Olympics difficult without vaccine
- TOKYO (AP) — The medical community in Japan is moving toward a consensus that holding next year's Tokyo Olympics may hinge on finding a coronavirus vaccine. Japan Medical Association president Yoshitake Yokokura said in a video media conference on Tuesday that the Olympics were possible only if the infections were under control, not only in Japan, but globally. "In my view, it would be difficult to hold the Olympics unless effective vaccines are developed,” Yokokura said. He did not say whether he opposes the Olympics without vaccines. Japan has reported 13,576 COVID-19 cases, and 712 others from a cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo earlier this year. On Tuesday, the health ministry reported 389 total deaths from the virus. Japan and the International Olympic Committee agreed to postpone the Tokyo Games until July 23, 2021, because of the coronavirus pandemic. Japan is under a month-long state of emergency amid a rapid increase of infections across the country. A Japanese professor of infectious disease said last week he was also skeptical the Olympics could open in 15 months. “I am very pessimistic about holding the Olympics Games next summer unless you hold the Olympic Games in a totally different structure such as no audience, or a very limited participation," said Kentaro Iwata, professor of infectious disease at Kobe University. Devi Sridhar, a professor of Global Health at the University of Edinburgh, also said holding the Olympics may depend on finding a vaccine. This could also apply to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in China, where the coronavirus was first detected. She said a vaccine was “optimistically 12 to 18 months away." “Science is just half the battle,” Sridhar said in an email to The Associated Press. “The other half is...

Wall Street is expecting top line numbers from Google's parent to be hit by a slowdown in digital ad spending due to the coronavirus outbreak. Market participants will be focusing on a two-day meeting by the U.S. Federal Reserve. In recent months, the Fed has slashed rates to near zero, restarted bond purchases and rolled out an unprecedented range of programs to keep credit flowing and shore up business and household confidence. A raft of pharma companies, including Pfizer Inc, Merck & Co Inc, Centene Corp and Novartis AG are scheduled to post their first-quarter results. Pfizer is expected to provide an update on the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on its businesses. Investors would also be looking out for progress on the company's coronavirus drug development programs and details on its deal with Mylan. Merck's sales of cancer drug Keytruda are expected to remain strong despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Investor focus will also be on Merck's sales in international markets such as China and any changes to its full-year forecast. Investors will also focus on Centene's comments about COVID-19 related costs and possible benefits due to a decline in healthcare spending by Americans. Meanwhile, Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG is seen reporting sales rose from $11.1 billion in 2019 on the strength of skin and arthritis drug Consentyx and its heart failure medicine Entresto. Chief Executive Val Narasimhan may also update progress on testing generic hydroxychloroquine in coronavirus patients. Ford Motor Co is expected to report a first-quarter loss. The automaker will discuss efforts to shore up its cash position. The company previewed a big loss related to COVID-19 shutdowns. PepsiCo Inc is expected to report a rise in revenue for the quarter ending in March, but all eyes will be focused on any forecast the company makes about demand in the second quarter after rival Coca-Cola Co warned of sales taking a hit as restaurants, theaters and other venues closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. consumer confidence index is expected to have dropped to 87.9 in April from a reading of 120.0 in the previous month. The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller composite index of home prices in 20 metropolitan areas is also scheduled for release. Home price growth in 20 metro areas is likely to have increased 3.3% in February from a year ago, compared with a gain of 3.1% in January. (0900/1300) Caterpillar Inc is scheduled to post its first quarter earnings. The heavy equipment maker is expected to report a steep drop in earnings, hurt by business disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Starbucks Corp releases its second-quarter earnings. Focus will be on the coffee chain's business in China, where it was forced to close nearly all of its stores due to the coronavirus crisis earlier in the year. Several cafes in Asia are now open and investors will look for updates on the business and consumer behavior. Updates on its U.S. market, especially any comments on when stores are expected to reopen, will also be key. Yum China Holdings Inc is also scheduled to post it first-quarter results. Harley-Davidson Inc is expected to report lower first-quarter profit, hurt by the coronavirus pandemic that has forced it to temporarily suspend production in the United States. Oreo maker Mondelez International Inc is likely to post an increase in first-quarter revenue, thanks to consumers stockpiling snacks and chocolates ahead of the coronavirus-related lockdown in the United States and some European countries. Investors will be on the lookout for potential revisions to 2020 outlook and comments on demand so far in the current quarter. Xerox Holdings Corp is expected to post a drop in first-quarter revenue, hurt by weaker demand for its printers and photocopiers as more businesses digitize their work. Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc is expected to post a rise in revenue for the first quarter. Investors will be on the lookout for any commentary on the economic uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on forecast. Southwest Airlines Co is scheduled to report first-quarter results that will show the initial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on earnings and travel demand, which airlines say has virtually disappeared and may not fully return before the end of the year. Wells Fargo & Co shareholders will vote on a number of proposals at new CEO Charlie Scharf's first meeting at the company. The meeting has drawn large protests every year since the 2016 sales practices scandal erupted. Meanwhile, HSBC Holdings plc reports its first quarter earnings and expected to show a heavy hit from the economic impact of the new coronavirus in its twin homes of Hong Kong and London. UBS Group AG also presents its first-quarter results. Investors will be looking out for signs of how the coronavirus pandemic is likely to impact business. BP Plc reports its first quarter results which are set to be dominated by the dramatic drop in demand for energy and collapsing oil prices due to coronavirus. Other major companies, including United Parcel Service Inc and 3M Co are also scheduled to post their first-quarter results, while D.R. Horton Inc is expected to release full second-quarter results after reporting preliminary results on April 7. Canadian companies including commercial real estate service provider Colliers International Group Inc and wood products company West Fraser Timber Co Ltd are scheduled to post earnings for the first quarter. Brazil's statistics agency IBGE releases mid-April IPCA-15 consumer price index. The consumer prices had increased 0.02% in the month to mid-March. Separately, Mexico is slated to release trade balance data for March. The country had posted a $1,429 million trade surplus in February when adjusted for seasonal swings. In non-seasonally adjusted terms, it posted a trade surplus of $2,911 million.
