Amazon airline ATSG touts red-hot business for cargo jet leases
- Executives at Air Transport Services Group, which provides aircraft and outsourced cargo transport for Amazon's private airline, say the rise in pandemic-related e-commerce is stimulating heavy demand for flying and leasing Boeing 767 freighters, and that new long-term leases will provide ongoing revenue long after the current freight peak subsides. The provider of bundled air transport services is completely sold out with 15 leases this year, including 11 for Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), and already has firm orders for nine of the midsize widebody aircraft next year, Chief Commercial Officer Mike Berger said Wednesday during an investor presentation.

Air Transport Services Group Starts Business To Train Pilots
- Air Transport Services Group Inc (NASDAQ: ATSG) has added another business line to its portfolio of aircraft leasing and outsourced transport services: pilot training.Wilmington, Ohio-based ATSG said Monday it has formed a new venture, Airborne Training Services, to train commercial airline pilots on Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft through class and simulator-based instruction. The company is essentially consolidating in-house training for its own cargo and passenger airlines, and offering the service to other airlines too. ATSG said it has completed an agreement with Avenger Flight Group LLC to extend its training capacity. Under the seven-year contract, Avenger will provide additional 767 and 777 flight simulator resources for ATSG pilots and Airborne Training Services' customers.Subsidiary airline ABX Air previously handled pilot training and simulators for ATSG. The new venture allows ATSG to become more efficient in providing those services across its three airlines — ABX, Air Transport International and Omni Air International, spokeswoman Kym Parks said in an email. "To be able to provide the same level of training that has been developed over 40 years of operation to external customers, we needed to develop a relationship that would give customers access to a broader range of airframe types and additional access to support capacity," Parks said, explaining the Avenger engagement.ATSG is a diversified air services company. It offers a range of services, including aircraft leasing, crews and maintenance to fly aircraft for other airlines, bundled aircraft and operating service, maintenance and engineering services, freighter conversions and ground-handling services. It operates aircraft for a number of major customers, including Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). The company's second-quarter pretax earnings increased 20%, aided by an overall shortage of air cargo capacity that increased demand for its all-cargo aircraft. The new ATSG training center, certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, offers in-depth classroom instruction and flight training on full flight simulators. It is led by Alex Thurmond, who most recently managed the learning center at FlightSafety International, ATSG said.Click here for more FreightWaves/American Shipper stories by Eric Kulisch. / Contact: ekulisch@freightwaves.com /Twitter: @ericreportsRECOMMENDED READING:E-commerce, pandemic charters boost ATSG's Q2 revenuesAir cargo market: Brace for bigrate hikesMesa Airlines envisions operating 10 DHL cargo jets by 2022See more from Benzinga * USPS' Holiday Surcharges May Be Lump Of Coal For Merchants * TFI Raises 9 Million In Share Offering * JD.com Buys 2 Million Majority Stake In Express Delivery Giant(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Analysis: Amazon Air And ATSG Grow Together
- Amazon's announcement that it will lease 12 all-cargo aircraft from a key contract carrier demonstrates how the online retail and logistics giant has created a formidable private airline in the span of four years to keep up with the enormous growth of e-commerce.The additional Boeing 767 freighters will expand Amazon's (NASDAQ: AMZN) fleet beyond 80 aircraft by the end of 2021, and a new report from researchers at DePaul University in Chicago estimates Amazon Air could have about 200 aircraft at its disposal in seven to eight years. Amazon Air now operates almost 100 flights per day despite focusing primarily on North America, it said.Having an air network to complement its ubiquitous ground-based shipping network allows the company to better control price and performance for overnight and two-day delivery promised to 105 million Prime members, and move inventory between fulfillment centers. Analysts say that having an in-house airline not only helps its own supply chain but positions Amazon to offer third-party, end-to-end logistics services like those of FedEx (NYSE: FDX) and UPS (NYSE: UPS)The new aircraft stem from a December 2018 deal with Air Transport Services Group (NASDAQ: ATSG) that gave Amazon options for 17 aircraft and increased rights to own a piece of its business partner. The dozen aircraft will be leased for 10 years, with options for Amazon to extend the term for three years, according to ATSG.One of the converted freighters entered service last month and ATSG's leasing arm, Cargo Aircraft Management, is scheduled to deliver the remainder next year. More than two dozen CAM aircraft, flown and operated by sister company Air Transport International, are in service with Amazon today. CAM expects to have 31 of the midsize freighters under lease with Amazon by the end of the year and 42 in service by year-end 2021.CAM typically purchases passenger planes that are 15 to 20 years old and then manages their conversion into freighters.Amazon has not made a decision yet on who will operate the latest tranche of aircraft, a spokesperson said, but if history is precedent they will go to Air Transport International. Amazon is ATSG's second-largest customer after the Department of Defense and accounted for 23% of its revenue last year.In exchange for the commitment for 12 more leases, Amazon will receive 7 million warrants to purchase ATSG stock, increasing its potential ownership stake to 38%. If Amazon leases five more aircraft under the 2018 deal, its equity stake in ATSG could reach 40% — double the investment rights granted in the initial 2016 partnership. So far, Amazon has not exercised any of the warrants granted by Wilmington, Ohio-based ATSG. Diversified carrier strategyAmazon recently added Sun Country to its roster of outsourced air transport providers. The e-tailer last summer leased 15 converted Boeing 737-800 freighters from GE Capital Aviation Services and plans to place 10 of them with Sun Country, a traditional passenger airline that launched its cargo operation in late April. The aircraft are suitable for smaller markets where a 767 freighter — the model that dominates the Amazon Air fleet and has a 187,000-pound maximum payload — is not necessary. Amazon's other primary provider of leased aircraft and outsourced airlift, besides ATSG and Air Transport International, is Atlas Air Worldwide, which operates planes under its Atlas Air and Southern Air brands.Having multiple air subcontractors spreads Amazon's risk, especially as it relates to labor relations with pilots, analysts say. Atlas Air, for example, has been embroiled in contentious contract talks with the Teamsters union for a long time. Last year, disaffected pilots conducted work slowdowns and sick-outs that led to service disruptions and Amazon transferring flying responsibility for two planes to ATSG."What Amazon has done is create a firewall around having direct exposure to pilot labor and pushed that to subcontractors," Brian Clancy, a partner at Logistics Capital & Strategy, told FreightWaves. "They want as many viable subcontractors within each of the payload range segments. They're trying to create an ecosystem where subcontractors are fungible. Next man up. I can plug and play."If you read the fine print on any of these contracts, they might have a contractual duration that might be multiyear, but when you look at all the outs, all the footnotes, they are very flexible to Amazon," Clancy said. The Sun Country-Amazon marriage is timely for both parties, Clancy added. Amazon gets another partner it can play off against others, and Sun Country, now owned by private equity group Apollo Management, is in growth mode. Some of Amazon Air's future expansion could be in the form of smaller airlines, such as twin-engine turboprops or the Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster used by FedEx Express, or through the acquisition of another cargo airline, suggests the DePaul University study authored by Professor Joseph Schwieterman. And Clancy said at some point it will make sense for Amazon to upsize to Boeing 777 or MD-11 aircraft for international and domestic trunk routes.Airport hubsAmazon still relies heavily on FedEx Express and UPS for domestic air transport and DHL to haul international shipments. UPS, by comparison, operates about 265 aircraft and has about 300 aircraft in its fleet, when charters and lease are included. DHL Express operates over 260 dedicated aircrafts with 17 partner airlines, including Southern Air and ATSG subsidiary ABX Air. FedEx, the largest air cargo operator in the world, operates 679 planes (398 truck aircraft and 282 turboprop feeder planes), according to its latest quarterly report. Amazon's air network is decentralized and not designed to ensure nationwide next-day delivery, as FedEx and UPS systems do. Instead, Amazon air stations are located at secondary, cargo-friendly airports near major warehouses and within a day's truck drive of fulfillment centers. * (Source: Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, DePaul University)Amazon this summer plans to open a 42-acre air terminal at Lakeland Linder International Airport, a general aviation airport near Tampa, Florida, after last month picking San Bernardino International Airport outside Los Angeles as its western hub and opening a regional hub at Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas last September."Amazon Air's network does not yet have the breadth to allow Amazon to provide the same range of service as FedEx and UPS. It is designed partially to compete with — and partially complement — the services of these other companies. Such complementarity is reflected in the fact that three of the five airports having the most Amazon Air flights — Cincinnati, Chicago Rockford and Ontario, Calif., — are large hubs for air-freight integrators," the DePaul report said.FedEx and UPS also operate at San Bernardino airport and FedEx has a sort facility at Alliance Airport.Amazon still is predominantly oriented toward second-day delivery, which makes having late-night flights less critical. About three-quarters of the Amazon Air flights evaluated by the DePaul researchers depart between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., versus overnight for the big express carriers. Although FedEx and UPS schedules are highly predictable, Amazon's vary considerably."Amazon Air marches to the beat of a different drummer than FedEx or UPS. It is more likely to operate flights during the daylight hours, operate from cargo-focused airports having little passenger traffic, and dynamically change schedules from one day to the next," Schwieterman said in an email.Amazon is on track to open its primary air hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in 2021, which includes a $1.5 billion, 3 million-square-foot sortation facility. Amazon is currently using DHL's facility there to sort packages and service aircraft for Amazon's 14 routes from the airport. The ability to eventually handle 100 aircraft per day in a hub-and-spoke system could alter Amazon's approach.(Click here for more articles by Eric Kulisch)See more from Benzinga * Breaking: Truck Transportation Jobs Dropped Slightly In May * Volume Faucet On Full Blast But Rates Still A Dribble * Protecting Reefer Containers From Premature Wear(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. - Looking into the current session, Air Transport Services Group Inc. (NASDAQ: ATSG) shares are trading at $22.32, after a 5.43% increase. Moreover, over the past month, the stock increased by 4.15%, but in the past year, fell by 1.72%. Shareholders might be interested in knowing whether the stock is undervalued, even if the company is performing up to par in the current session. The stock is currently higher from its 52 week low by 69.09%. Assuming that all other factors are held constant, this could present itself as an opportunity for investors trying to diversify their portfolio with integrated freight & logistics stocks, and capitalize on the lower share price observed over the year. The P/E ratio is used by long-term shareholders to assess the company's market performance against aggregate market data, historical earnings, and the industry at large. A lower P/E indicates that shareholders do not expect the stock to perform better in the future, and that the company is probably undervalued. It shows that shareholders are less than willing to pay a high share price, because they do not expect the company to exhibit growth, in terms of future earnings.Depending on the particular phase of a business cycle, some industries will perform better than others.Compared to the aggregate P/E ratio of the 27.97 in the integrated freight & logistics industry, Air Transport Services Inc. has a lower P/E ratio of 15.45. Shareholders might be inclined to think that they might perform worse than its industry peers. It's also possible that the stock is undervalued.Price to earnings ratio is not always a great indicator of the company's performance. Depending on the earnings makeup of a company, investors may not be able to attain key insights from trailing earnings.See more from Benzinga * 17 Industrials Stocks Moving In Thursday's Pre-Market Session(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Amazon Dives Into Weak Aircraft Market, Leases 12 More Planes
- (Bloomberg) -- Amazon.com Inc. is expanding its air cargo operations with plans to grow its fleet to more than 80 planes as the online retailer takes advantage of a depressed market for aircraft during the pandemic. The company announced Wednesday that it had leased 12 converted Boeing 767-300 passenger planes from Air Transport Services Group Inc. One was added to Amazon’s existing fleet of 70 aircraft last month, and the rest will be delivered in 2021, the Seattle-based company said in a statement. The deal comes as the global aviation industry grapples with severe travel restrictions to limit the spread of Covid-19. Air Transport shares rose as much as 16% on the news.Amazon, meanwhile, is trying to keep up with a booming e-commerce business that has benefited from a surge in online shopping from people sheltering at home. The company unveiled the air cargo service, now called Amazon Air, in 2016 as it looked to rely less on carriers such as United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp.A report released last month by the DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute of Metropolitan Development estimated that Amazon Air may grow to 200 planes in the next seven or eight years, creating a cargo service that could rival UPS. “Amazon Air’s robust expansion makes it one of the biggest stories in the air cargo industry in years,” the study’s authors wrote. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

Airlines Fight To Exit 'Intensive Care'
- Despite signs of modest improvement in passenger traffic and the lifting of many coronavirus restrictions, airlines aren't relaxing efforts to shore up balance sheets and restructure in hopes of remaining solvent until demand returns in a meaningful way years from now.Since Friday, several U.S. and international airlines have announced they are receiving more government assistance to stay afloat, implementing reorganization plans, and laying off workers. Still, some airline executives are preparing scenarios for surviving and thriving, beyond the next 12 months.Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) on Monday said in a regulatory filing that it received the second tranche of funding, worth $652 million, from the U.S. government's emergency assistance program for airlines aimed at protecting jobs through September. The U.S. Treasury Department has disbursed $2.3 billion of the $3.2 billion committed by the government, about two-thirds of which is in direct grants and the rest in the form of low-interest loans. The remaining installments are scheduled for June and July. Southwest has 60,000 employees, many of whom have taken unpaid temporary leave while the airline operates at about 40% of its normal schedule. Public focus is on the $25 billion in workforce assistance to passenger airlines, but cargo airlines were also promised $4 billion. On Thursday, Air Transport Services Group (NASDAQ: ATSG), a provider of outsourced charter transport, said it had reached agreement with the Treasury Department for non- repayable grants totaling $67 million for subsidiary Omni Air International and an additional $8 million for Air Transport International, which provides dedicated airlift for customers such as Amazon and DHL. The money will be paid in installments through September. In exchange, the company cannot implement involuntary furloughs or reduce employee pay and benefits and will limit executive compensation through March 24, 2022. The U.S. government was motivated to support one of its largest carriers after the Defense Department's order in March to restrict movement of all military and civilian personnel, and troop deployments, around the world, Susquehanna Financial Group airline analyst Christopher Stathoulopoulos said in a research note. Omni operates 15 passenger aircraft and is a major supplier of passenger airlift for the Defense Department, which is ATSG's largest customer. Contract work for the U.S. military by Omni, ATI, and sister cargo carrier ABX Air was the biggest source of ATSG's 63% growth in revenue last year, Chief Financial Officer Quint Turner told investors in early May, when the company reported a $134 million quarterly profit.Continuation of military travel restrictions could put additional pressure on adjusted operating profits for ATSG and Atlas Air Worldwide, which has not applied for payroll support from the government. The different approaches may be explained by the fact that only a quarter of Atlas' revenue comes from the Defense Department compared to about one-third for ATSG.Domestic passenger airlines have made clear that they will have to significantly downsize their workforces after the government assistance ends because they expect to be operating fewer aircraft for several years until large numbers of people feel safe flying again, or can afford to do so after the pandemic. Their financial health is important to shippers too because they are a convenient way to ship cargo in normal times. On Friday, United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) said it was eliminating 13 officer positions as part of a reorganization that began earlier in the week. Effective June 15, United will consolidate several departments and functions, with a single vice president for financial planning, corporate real estate moving to new Chief Customer Officer Toby Enqvist's shop, environmental affairs moving under government affairs, and domestic and international line stations reporting to a single person. In total, eight officers, including Jim DeYoung, vice president of network operations, will leave the company by Oct. 1 and five positions will not be refilled.Earlier in May, the airline said it would carve out 30% of its mid-level management and administrative staff. The next round of management and administrative changes will be announced before the end of June, and the entire reorganization process will be completed by August, United said in a memo to employees.Meanwhile, Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL) and its pilot's union are in talks to avoid dismissals for 2,327 pilots who currently don't have flying assignments after a reshuffling of pilots to different locations or airline types designed to align staffing levels with summer flying schedules. Reuters was first to report the pilot changes. The Delta Master Executive Council, part of the Air Line Pilots Association, said in a statement that it also is discussing potential early retirement for pilots who qualify, as well as voluntary leave programs. Future Vision Travel demand has ticked up from the bottom six weeks ago, with Transportation Security Administration data for screened passengers show a decline of 90.4% in May from the year-ago traffic compared with 95.3% in April. Industry officials say leisure travel to beach and mountain destinations is luring travelers, while business and international travel continue to lag.United CEO Scott Kirby said last week he is looking beyond short-term survival and trying to manage the recovery by minimizing involuntary furloughs so the company can seize the moment to grab market share when demand rebounds. One option was recently modeled by Brussels Airlines pilots, who offered to work fewer hours to keep more on staff after the company last month said its restructuring would involve shedding 25% of its workforce. And in a video message posted on Southwest Airlines' community blog, Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly said the airline is trying to reimagine a long-term future after each department was instructed to develop 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day plans for responding to the crisis and navigating through the recovery. "Since the company is in intensive care, so to speak, our immediate planning is focused on today," but Southwest is developing flexible long-term scenarios to position the airline for whatever health and economic conditions exist at the time, he said. * Gary Kelly (Photo: SW Airlines)"We're preparing contingency plans if radical changes are required in order for us to survive," Kelly said. Aircraft levels will vary depending on the scenario that materializes, adding that he hopes the 737 MAX will be cleared to return to service by the fourth quarter because "tis the most cost-effective plane in terms of fuel and maintenance" and provides a great customer experience."When traffic returns we'll compete hard for customers, understanding it will be a brutal low-fare environment as there are far more airline seats right now and for some time than there are customers," Kelly said. Southwest Airlines has a good chance of getting back on its feet because it is the largest U.S. domestic carrier. It also has a strong balance sheet with $12 billion in liquidity that could carry it well into 2021 with zero revenue, a loyal following, single-fleet type (Boeing 737) and a strong management team experienced at dealing with downturns, says Helane Becker, an airline analyst at Cowen investment bank. The delay in receiving more MAX aircraft from Boeing has actually helped the company in the short term, she added in a note to clients.International Response Deutsche Lufthansa AG (FRA: LA) on Monday also said it has agreed to a financial aid package from the German government and will reluctantly accept European Commission conditions to relinquish access rights at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. The company is urging shareholders to approve the deal at a June 25 general meeting even though they will take a haircut."It must be clearly stated, however, that Lufthansa is facing a very difficult road ahead," Board Chairman Karl-Ludwig Kley said in a statement. "Stabilizing our Lufthansa is not an end in itself. Together with the German government, it must be our goal to defend our leading position in global aviation," chief executive Carsten Spohr added. "We are grateful to all those involved in the stabilization process, including our customers, employees and shareholders for this perspective. We will not disappoint them and will now work hard to ensure the competitiveness and future viability of our airline group."Analysts expect international travel to take longer to bounce back than domestic travel. Lufthansa depends heavily on international business and the company is planning workforce reductions "in the most socially acceptable way possible," Spohr said. Emirates, which operates a long-haul network out of Dubai, also said in a statement that it will let go of an undisclosed number of employees because of the financial hardship caused by COVID-19. Fellow Gulf Arab carriers Etihad and Qatar Airways had previously announced layoffs.Emirates cut salaries and wages after drastically reducing passenger operations in March in an effort to avoid job reductions, and Chairman and CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said then the United Arab Emirates would provide financial assistance. Emirates has seen a drop in cargo revenue because many of its wide-body passenger aircraft are grounded, but cargo business is still strong compared to passenger because of high demand for freighters and passenger jets used as auxiliary cargo planes.Airlines are taking tentative steps to restore passenger service, as countries slowly reopen their economies. Italy opens its borders to regional and international travel on Wednesday, giving the tourism industry its first sign of optimism since the nation went into lockdown in early March.

Amid COVID Outbreak, Freighter Demand Boosts ATSG In Q1
- It's much better to be a cargo than a passenger airline these days. The former has seen demand shoot through the roof; the latter's business has fallen off a cliff.Air Transport Services Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATSG) delivered first-quarter operating profit of $133.7 million, or $2.27 per share, versus $22.6 million in the year-ago period on the strength of combined revenue growth of 12% for its aircraft leasing and air transport segments. That's a good three months compared to passenger carriers that were hundreds of millions of dollars in the red as the coronavirus destroyed travel demand.Consolidated diluted earnings of 84 cents per share beat consensus estimates by 54 cents, and revenue came in 11.8% higher than expected at $389 million. The results follow record revenues and strong earnings growth in 2019.ATSG, Wilmington, Ohio, is not providing full-year guidance but did say it expects adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to exceed the 2019 total of $452 million. That's more detail about future performance than most companies are giving these days because of coronavirus uncertainties. The air services provider said it expects to receive $67 million from the federal aid package for the airline industry designed to prevent involuntary furloughs through September.View more earnings on ATSGThe company continues to be busy, from its cargo subsidiaries deploying more aircraft to meet growing e-commerce demand at customers such as Amazon.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) and DHL, to its maintenance and engineering group completing avionics work on short notice for the New England Patriots' Boeing 767 so it could fly to China to pick up about 1 million N95 face masks for hospitals in Boston and New York."Despite the pandemic, we remain cautiously optimistic about the rest of 2020, as we deploy more 767 converted freighters for customers responding to expanded e-commerce shopping, and operate passenger aircraft to support the U.S. military's evolving requirements," CEO Joe Hete said in his final earnings statement before retiring on Thursday.Cargo Aircraft Management (CAM), the leasing company, benefited from seven newly converted 767 freighters deployed in the past year, including one being flown by UPS since January. CAM has 62 of its in-service cargo aircraft leased to customers — three more than a year ago — and 35 of those are operated by sister companies ABX Air or Air Transport International. CAM has 15 aircraft being converted to cargo configuration or ready for lease, and more than half are already committed to customers, with the rest likely to be rented this year or next, ATSG said.First-quarter revenue for its contract air transport subsidiaries increased 10%, mainly from growth in passenger charter Omni Air and Air Transport International. The three airlines operate 69 aircraft, 15 of them passenger variants. The company said it is holding on to two 757-200 freighters for the rest of the year even though DHL's contract for them expired Friday.Air Transport International is training crews now to begin flying four additional 767-300 aircraft leased by Amazon from CAM.See more from Benzinga * Stifel Sees Decent Volumes Near Term, 2Q In Jeopardy(C) 2020 Benzinga.com.
