Insider Sells Atlas Air Worldwide's Stock

  • Shares of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAWW) rose by 2.7% from the previous closing price. A Form 4 filing filed with the SEC on Wednesday, August 12 showed that Mcnabb Duncan J. sold 1,500 shares at an average price of $60.18. The transaction moved the executive's stake in Atlas Air Worldwide Hldgs Inc. to 11,019 shares. The Importance of Insider Transactions While transactions from an insider shouldn't be used as the sole item to make an investment or trading decision, an insider buying or selling stock in their company can be a good added factor that leads to more conviction in a decision.Insiders buying stock after a notable sell off can indicate an insider's long-term belief in the success of the company; insiders buying stock at new highs can be an indication the exec doesn't feel the stock is overvalued. Conversely, insiders who are selling stock at new lows can potentially indicate some kind of capitulation moment. Insiders selling at new highs can indicate that exec wants to "take some profit" and "lock in a gain."Important Transaction Codes Investors prefer focusing on transactions which take place in the open market, indicated in the Form 4 with codes P for purchase and S for sale. If the transaction was an open-market transaction, that means that the insider made a concious decision for the company's stock moving forward.Transaction codes other than P or S are often viewed with less conviction as they are often not tied to a decision by the exec. As an example, transaction code C indicates the conversion of an option. Transaction code A indicates the insider may have been forced to sell shares in order to receive compensation the exec was promised upon being hired by a company.See more from Benzinga * Insider Sells Atlas Air Worldwide's Stock * Stocks That Hit 52-Week Highs On Thursday * Stocks That Hit 52-Week Highs On Wednesday(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Atlas Air Capitalizes On Transport Shortages For Big Q2 Profit Gain

  • Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAWW) on Thursday reported that revenues in the second quarter jumped 24.3% from the same period in 2019 to $825.3 million, significantly pushing up adjusted net income as the all-cargo operator cashed in on the extreme demand for pandemic relief supplies and high freight rates.A significant shortage of global air cargo capacity resulting from airlines withdrawing passenger flights during the coronavirus crisis resulted in higher utilization of Atlas' fleet by airlines and shippers. The Purchase, N.Y., company said adjusted pre-tax earnings totaled $247 million compared with $84.1 million a year prior. Adjusted net income was $4.71 per diluted share, compared with 17 cents per diluted share. The consensus estimate of analysts was for adjusted EBITDA of $166 million, earnings per share of $2.21 and revenue of $758 million."Revenue and earnings in the second quarter continued to exceed our expectations," said CEO John W. Dietrich. "These positive results were primarily driven by the team capitalizing on strong demand and higher yields in our commercial charter and South America businesses. We also continued to provide the U.S. military with essential services and our ACMI customers flew well above their minimum guarantees."ACMI customers bundle the Aircraft lease with an agreement to operate the plane (Crew, Maintenance and Insurance).Atlas Air likely benefited from its exposure to the spot market and the ability to take advantage of high market rates, compared to competitor Air Transport Services Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATSG), which announced results yesterday, and is heavily involved flying under contract for express networks operated by Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and DHL.Cargo charter block hours increased 62% year-over-year on 22% higher yields.During the quarter Atlas reactivated three 747-400 converted freighters and kept a 777 from its pure leasing business for its own use to meet demand for long-term charter programs, including new agreements with manufacturers such as HP Inc., and large freight forwarders like DHL Global Forwarding, APEX Logistics, DB Schenker, Flexport and Geodis that wanted to secure capacity.Atlas Air Worldwide's operating companies are Atlas Air, Southern Air and Polar Air Cargo.View more earnings on AAWWAtlas offered full-year guidance of more than $3 billion in revenue and adjusted EBITDA of about $750 million. At the halfway point, Atlas produced $1.5 billion in revenue with adjusted EBITDA at $368.2 million."Our outlook also expects approximately 50% of our full-year 2020 adjusted net income to occur in the second half of the year. That would result in 2020 adjusted net income being more than double 2019," Dietrich said.Historically, Atlas generates the vast majority of earnings in the second half of the year. The contract flying portion of the business made less money than the charter side because several aircraft underwent heavy maintenance, including engine overhauls, to take advantage of repair shop openings and vendor discounts, Atlas said. Unit results were also impacted by a 10% increase in pilot pay rates resulting from a recent interim agreement and premium pay for pilots operating in certain regions of the world significantly impacted by COVID-19.Atlas improved liquidity to $739 million from $114 million at the start of the year. The improved cash balance included a $20 million grant from the federal government's bailout program for airlines to keep employees on payrolls with existing wages and benefits through the end of September. Although all-cargo carriers are faring much better than passenger airlines, Atlas has tightened its belt to stay lean in case the novel coronavirus crisis gets worse. It has reduced nonessential employee travel, the use of contractors and ground staff hiring. Click here for more FreightWaves/American Shipper stories by Eric Kulisch.RECOMMENDED READING:Pilots blame Atlas Air, FAA for 2019 freighter crashAirlines grew 1H volumes despite drop in volumeAtlas Air takes the lead in Project AirbridgeSee more from Benzinga * Pilots Blame Atlas Air, FAA For 2019 Freighter Crash * NTSB Schedules Public Meeting On Fatal Atlas Air Flight(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. Atlas Air Worldwide Reports Second-Quarter 2020 Results

  • * Results Reflect Strong Airfreight Demand and Resilient Business Model * Reported Net Income of $78.9 Million * Adjusted EBITDA of $247.0 Million and Adjusted Net Income of $123.2 Million * Expecting Third-Quarter and Full-Year 2020 Earnings Growth PURCHASE, N.Y., Aug. 06, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAWW) today announced second-quarter 2020 net income of $78.9 million, or $3.01 per diluted share, compared with net income of $86.9 million, or $1.61 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2019.On an adjusted basis, EBITDA totaled $247.0 million in the second quarter this year compared with $84.1 million in the second quarter of 2019. Adjusted net income in the second quarter of 2020 totaled $123.2 million, or $4.71 per diluted share, compared with $4.5 million, or $0.17 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2019.“Revenue and earnings in the second quarter continued to exceed our expectations,” said Chief Executive Officer John W. Dietrich. “These positive results were primarily driven by the team capitalizing on strong demand and higher yields in our commercial charter and South America businesses. We also continued to provide the U.S. military with essential services and our ACMI customers flew well above their minimum guarantees.“We continued to execute on very favorable business opportunities in a challenging operating environment, with the safety of our employees as our top priority. We leveraged the scale of our world-class fleet, the scope of our global operations and the flexibility of our business model to capitalize on market dynamics.“To serve this increased demand, we reactivated three of our 747-400 converted freighters and operationalized a 777 freighter from our Dry Leasing business. This enabled us to serve the strong and profitable shorter-term demand, while also entering into numerous new long-term charter programs at attractive yields. We expanded our long-term charter business to include new agreements with manufacturers such as HP Inc., and large freight forwarders like DHL Global Forwarding, APEX Logistics, DB Schenker, Flexport and Geodis, all that wanted to secure committed capacity from us.”Mr. Dietrich added: “We continued to deliver safe and high-quality service for our customers, despite the many challenges presented by this pandemic, including a variety of travel restrictions, testing protocols, quarantine mandates and other operational challenges. This is a true testament to the commitment and dedication of all our Atlas team members, particularly our crew and ground staff out in the field.“We are taking every precaution to safeguard all our employees and ensure that we continue to transport the goods the world needs during these important times. We also appreciate our customers’ and vendors’ commitment to safety, and their partnership and unity as we protect our employees and our operations.”  He said: “Atlas is continuing to play an essential role in the global supply chain, and the goods we carry help save lives, fuel economic activity and support jobs. We are playing a key role in our customers’ operating networks, and are helping businesses and communities manage through COVID-19.“With our broad portfolio of aircraft, including the world’s largest fleet of 747 freighters, along with large fleets of 777s, 767s and 737s, we provide our customers with fleet choices and operating capabilities that are unmatched in our industry.“We have a talented team, a strong balance sheet, and we continue to demonstrate our ability to adjust to market conditions, capitalize on strategic growth opportunities, and navigate through these evolving and uncertain times.“Reflecting our first-half results and our current market expectations, and subject to any material COVID-19 developments, we anticipate full-year 2020 revenue of just over $3 billion and adjusted EBITDA of approximately $750 million.*“Our outlook also expects approximately 50% of our full-year 2020 adjusted net income to occur in the second half of the year. That would result in 2020 adjusted net income being more than double 2019.”Second-Quarter ResultsVolumes in the second quarter of 2020 increased to 84,966 block hours compared with 80,282 in the second quarter of 2019, with revenue rising to $825.3 million compared with $663.9 million in the prior-year quarter.ACMI segment revenue during the period reflected lower block hours, primarily driven by the redeployment of 747-400 aircraft to the Charter segment to support new long-term charter programs with customers seeking to secure committed cargo capacity. This was partially offset by an increase in 777, 737 and 747-400 CMI flying.ACMI segment contribution decreased during the quarter primarily due to higher heavy maintenance, including additional engine overhauls and other maintenance performed to take advantage of slot availability and opportunities for vendor pricing discounts. In addition, segment contribution reflected higher pilot costs related to a 10% increase in pay rates resulting from our recent interim agreement with our pilots and premium pay for pilots operating in certain areas outside of the U.S. significantly impacted by COVID-19; and the redeployment of 747-400 aircraft to the Charter segment to support new long-term charter programs with customers seeking to secure committed cargo capacity. Partially offsetting these items was an increase in 777, 737 and 747-400 CMI flying, and a reduction in aircraft rent and depreciation.Charter segment revenue during the period primarily reflected increased levels of flying and an increase in the average rate per block hour. Block-hour volume growth was primarily driven by increased demand for freighter aircraft, reflecting a combination of increased demand for cargo, as well as the reduction of available cargo capacity in the market, the disruption of global supply chains due to the pandemic and our ability to increase utilization. As a result of this increase in demand and in support of new long-term charter programs with customers seeking to secure committed cargo capacity, we redeployed 747-400 aircraft from ACMI and began operating a 777 from our Dry Leasing business. The increase in the average rate per block hour primarily reflected higher commercial cargo yields (excluding fuel), partially offset by lower levels of 747 passenger flying for the U.S. military.Charter segment contribution was driven by the increase in commercial cargo yields (excluding fuel), and demand for freighter aircraft, reflecting a combination of increased demand for cargo, as well as the reduction of available capacity in the market, the disruption of the global supply chain due to the pandemic and our ability to increase utilization. In addition, segment contribution benefited from a reduction in aircraft rent and depreciation, and the redeployment of 747-400 aircraft from ACMI and a 777 freighter from Dry Leasing. These improvements were partially offset by: higher heavy maintenance expense, including additional engine overhauls and other maintenance performed to take advantage of slot availability and opportunities for vendor pricing discounts; lower U.S. military passenger flying as the pandemic disrupted the movement of U.S. military personnel; and higher pilot costs related to a 10% increase in pay rates resulting from our recent interim agreement with our pilots and premium pay for pilots operating in certain areas outside of the U.S. significantly impacted by COVID-19.In Dry Leasing, lower segment revenue and contribution in the second quarter of 2020 primarily related to changes in leases and the disposition of certain nonessential Dry Leased aircraft during the first quarter of 2020.Lower unallocated income and expenses, net, during the quarter primarily reflected a $24.3 million (after tax) refund of aircraft rent paid in previous years.Reported earnings in the second quarter of 2020 also included an effective income tax rate of 29.5%, due mainly to nondeductible changes in the value of outstanding warrants. On an adjusted basis, our results reflected an effective income tax rate of 21.6%.Cash and Short-Term InvestmentsAt June 30, 2020, our cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash and short-term investments totaled $739.2 million, compared with $114.3 million at December 31, 2019.Our improved cash balance primarily reflected strong cash provided by operating activities, and also included the funds we received through the Payroll Support Program available to air cargo carriers under the CARES Act. Those funds will be utilized to pay the salaries, wages and benefits of employees, and helps us to protect the jobs of our highly-skilled team during this period of global uncertainty.Net cash provided by financing activities during the first six months of 2020 primarily related to proceeds from debt issuance and from our revolving credit facility, partially offset by payments on debt obligations.Net cash used for investing activities during the first six months of 2020 primarily related to capital expenditures and payments for flight equipment and modifications, including spare engines and GEnx engine performance upgrade kits, partially offset by proceeds from the disposal of aircraft. To mitigate the impact of any continuation or worsening of the pandemic, we have implemented a number of cost-reduction initiatives, including a significant reduction in nonessential employee travel, the use of contractors and ground staff hiring. We have also taken actions to increase liquidity and strengthen our financial position, such as the sale of certain nonessential assets and our participation in the Payroll Support Program under the CARES Act.Half-Year ResultsReported results for the six months ended June 30, 2020 reflected net income of $102.3 million, or $3.

Greenlight's Einhorn bets on rising inflation with new positions -letter

  • Investor David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital is betting that prices will rise and told investors on Tuesday that Einhorn has added new positions in inflation swaps, a gold miners ETF, as well as in Teck Resources and Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings to be well-positioned for an eventual uptick. "We believe that market groupthink that profitless growth stocks that trade at astronomical valuations, in part on the basis that interest rates are low, will be disrupted by rising inflation expectations," Einhorn wrote in a letter seen by Reuters. Einhorn is coming off a relatively strong July when a 4.1% gain helped trim his loss for the year to down 17.5%.

Last Qantas 747 prepares to depart Sydney for Mojave retirement

  • Qantas Airways Ltd chief executive Alan Joyce signed the carrier's last Boeing Co 747 jet at Sydney airport on Wednesday, shortly before it was due to fly to the Mojave Desert for a retirement brought forward by the coronavirus pandemic. The journey marks the final flight for a Qantas 747 after 49 years of service with the Australian airline, which had previously planned to work the 747-400 fleet through to the end of the year. The four-engine plane with less favourable economics than newer-generation 787s and Airbus SE A350s had fallen out of favour even before the pandemic hit but Qantas, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and KLM have hastened retirement plans due to the lack of international travel demand.

Pilots Blame Atlas Air, FAA For 2019 Freighter Crash

  • (Updated July 17, 2020 at 8:57 A.M. with details from Cargo Airline Association.)The union representing pilots at all-cargo carrier Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAWW) strenuously objected to investigators' findings that mistakes by the captain contributed to a deadly crash last year, blaming the company and aviation regulators for allegedly letting an unqualified co-pilot fly commercial aircraft.A National Transportation Safety Board draft report this week attributed the accident's probable cause to errors by the first officer in response to inadvertent activation of a switch that aborted the plane's automated descent. The co-pilot, confused into thinking the Boeing 767-300 converted freighter was stalling, pitched it into a nosedive. Investigators said the pilot was distracted by other duties and failed to adequately monitor the flight path and quickly assume control of the aircraft. The independent agency also was critical of airline industry practices for selecting pilots and measuring their performance, and the Federal Aviation Administration for dragging its feet on implementing an electronic clearinghouse for sharing pilot records related to qualifications and performance. The investigation determined that the first officer deceived Atlas Air about his employment history to hide a history of performance deficiencies and his tendency to panic when faced with an unexpected event during training scenarios.Atlas Air was operating the plane for Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), which was dressed in the light blue "Amazon Prime Air" livery, when it went down Feb. 23, 2019 in a swamp about 40 miles from Houston's main airport. During a hearing to discuss the staff report, NTSB members "identified problems at Atlas Air that were evident in the safety culture and hiring and training programs, but the Board did not develop those issues into causes, findings or recommendations directed at Atlas Air," Teamster' Local 2750 said in a statement posted on Twitter. "Instead the Board placed responsibility on the captain to compensate for both the FAA's failures and the inadequacies of a pilot that Atlas hired, certified as qualified and type rated in the [Boeing] 767."The union is involved in lengthy and contentious negotiations with the airline on a new long-term contract for pilots. However, the report did fault Atlas Air's human resources department for relying on designated agents to review pilot background records and flag items of concern, which "resulted in the company's failure to evaluate the first officer's unsuccessful attempt to upgrade to captain at his previous employer.""We regularly evaluate our practices and protocols, and since the accident, have made several important enhancements to our own hiring, training, and pilot review procedures," Atlas Air said in a statement. The company declined to provide details about the new personnel procedures.Pilot Records DatabaseCongress instructed the FAA in 2010 to create an electronic pilot records database to ensure FAA and air carrier background information on pilots are retained for the life of the pilot and that air carriers review those records when making hiring decisions. But the mandate did not include a deadline. The concept is similar to renewed calls in the wake of protests over George Floyd's death for a national police misconduct registry so bad police officers can't move from one department to another. The FAA maintains records related to airman certificates, medical conditions and enforcement actions, while carriers maintain records related to pilot training and qualifications, final disciplinary actions, employment separation actions, and drug and alcohol testing. Sharing those forms is manual and often paper-based, with documents exchanged via mail or email. In 2015, the Transportation Department's inspector general admonished the FAA for not making significant progress on developing a centralized database for pilot records. The audit noted that air carriers often don't have all relevant pilot records available to review when evaluating pilot applications and making hiring decisions. The FAA responded at the time that the necessary rulemaking was lengthy and complex to ensure that data collected is reliable and secure.A decade earlier, the NTSB also recommended that the FAA require air carriers to obtain any notices of disapproval for pilots before making hiring decisions, but the agency never followed through with a rulemaking. Notices of disapproval are provided to pilots when they fail to satisfactorily complete a flight test, either an instrument rating, with a flight instructor, or for an airline transport pilot certificate. The FAA on March 30 issued a notice of proposed rulemaking for a pilot records database and says it plans to publish a final ruling early next year. The NTSB said that had the FAA complied with the database requirement, Atlas Air would have had relevant information about the first officer's employment history and deficient training performance. The Cargo Airline Association, in comments filed with the agency last month, said it strongly supports the rule, but that it should clearly spell out the roles and responsibilities of all interested parties to avoid confusion. The rulemaking, the CAA explained, represents a fundamental change in pilot record-keeping because it moves the look-back requirement from five years to a pilot's lifetime, involves technology investments to comply and requires companies to pay a fee to the government to conduct the checks. The trade association, which represents Atlas Air and four other carriers (ABX Air, FedEx Express, Kalitta Air and UPS) complained that the proposed rule didn't address the additional need for adjudication and document review when there are questions about the accuracy of historical records. It also asked that the FAA only require air carriers to check five-years of history for pilots currently employed and a rolling five-year time frame from the time a pilot left a company. The FAA should also postpone plans for a $110 user fee until there is more data on how much it will cost to operate the clearinghouse, it added.Click here for more FreightWaves/American Shipper stories by Eric Kulisch.RECOMMENDED READING:Federal court sides with Atlas Air in dispute with pilotsLessons from Qantas violation for overweight cargoAmazon shifts two freighters from Atlas Air to ATSGSee more from Benzinga * Seroka Working To Stem Tide Of Market Share Loss * Marten Rides Dedicated Division To A Strong Quarter * US-Canada Border Closure Extended To Aug. 21(C) 2020 Benzinga.com. U.S. safety board cites cockpit crew failures in Atlas Air fatal crash

  • The NTSB cited the first officer’s inappropriate response to an inadvertent activation of the airplane’s go-around mode at 6,000 feet that resulted in his spatial disorientation and led him to place the airplane in a steep dive from which it did not recover. Board members said the crash could have been prevented if the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had finalized a pilot records database. "The FAA has been dragging their feet through quicksand and not making sufficient progress," NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said at a hearing Tuesday.
