Thrifty ice cream goes greek with new pint flavors available now at
california rite aid stores
Camp hill, pa.--(business wire)--californians can now pick up rite aid's (nyse: rad) award-winning private brand thrifty ice cream in six new flavors including two greek-style nonfat frozen yogurts. thrifty is one of the first ice cream brands to convert the trendy greek-style yogurt into a sweeter, frozen variety. two new flavors – blueberry cheesecake and chocolate lovers – are crafted in the greek style, which is characterized by higher protein content, lower levels of lactose and live probiotic cultures that can help aid digestion. a third greek-style flavor – strawberry – is coming soon. "rite aid is proud to be one of the first retailers to offer greek-style frozen yogurt," said ron simmer, general manager of the thrifty ice cream plant in el monte, calif. "like the many storied thrifty flavors that came before, our greek-style varieties are primarily sourced, made and distributed in california – all for about half the price of most national competitors." in addition to the greek-style frozen yogurt, thrifty has also unveiled four new ice cream flavors – chocolate chip cookie dough, red velvet, mint 'n chip and pistachio nut. all six of the new flavors – and strawberry greek-style frozen yogurt still to come – are available in take-home pint containers at nearly all california rite aid stores for $2.29 each. the two current greek-style varieties have bold, green packaging to match the existing nonfat frozen yogurt varieties, which debuted summer of 2010 – also in the convenient pint containers. as a beloved californian brand, thrifty ice cream has been winning gold medals at the los angeles county fair every year since 1952. all thrifty ice cream is made with real california milk, and many of the ice cream recipes have remained the same for 50 years. the thrifty ice cream tradition began in 1940, when the first production plant opened in hollywood, calif. in 1976, the plant relocated to el monte, calif., where it remains. rite aid is one of the nation’s leading drugstore chains with approximately 4,700 stores in 31 states and the district of columbia. information about rite aid, including corporate background and press releases, is available through rite aid’s website at www.riteaid.com. photos/multimedia gallery available: http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/mmg.cgi?eid=50175820&lang=en
