Nashville, tenn.--(business wire)--hca (nyse:hca), which operates 164 hospitals and 111 ambulatory surgery centers, today announced that prince baawuah and jared dunlap are the recipients of the 2011 hca corris boyd scholarships. the scholarship program was established in 2006 in honor of the late corris boyd who was a senior healthcare executive with healthtrust purchasing group and hca. boyd, who died in 2005, was dedicated to improving diversity in healthcare and a champion of excellence in leadership. the hca corris boyd scholarships provide up to $20,000 annually in tuition for two deserving minority students pursuing master’s degrees in healthcare management. baawuah will attend the university of michigan where he will begin work towards a master of public health in health management and policy. he lives in new york and earned a degree in economics from the city college of new york (cuny). dunlap will enter columbia university’s mailman school of public health where he will pursue a master of public health in healthcare management. dunlap, who is from cloquet, minn., graduated from ucla with a bachelor’s degree in american indian studies with a focus on pre-medicine/health. “we are pleased to award these scholarships to prince and jared, both of whom have bright futures in healthcare management,” said sherri neal, hca’s diversity officer. “the corris boyd scholarships are part of hca’s efforts to improve diversity in healthcare management. our cultural competence programs, internal inclusion strategies and external partnerships are essential to our commitment to diversity.” hca has several initiatives to help foster a culture of inclusion. these include the following areas: education and awareness, workforce development, supplier and contracting diversity and culturally competent care. the company has been recognized by the american hospital association and profiles in diversity journal for its focus on promoting diversity in healthcare. hca was founded in nashville, tenn. in 1968 when dr. thomas f. frist, jr., his father dr. thomas f. frist, sr. and entrepreneur jack massey set out to provide communities with better quality healthcare. today, hca is a leading provider of healthcare services, and its 190,000 employees serve approximately 18 million patients each year. the company has developed nationally recognized patient safety initiatives to prevent healthcare-associated infections like mrsa, perinatal safety programs to help protect the health of mothers and babies and bar-code systems to enhance medication safety. all references to “company” and “hca” as used through this release refer to hca holdings, inc. and its affiliates.
