Hca appoints dr. ravi chari vice president of clinical excellence
Nashville, tenn.--(business wire)--hca (nyse:hca), which operates 164 hospitals and 111 ambulatory surgery centers, today announced dr. ravi chari has been named vice president of clinical excellence, a new position, effective today. chari had previously served as chief medical officer of hca’s tristar division, which includes 17 hospitals and 9 ambulatory surgery centers in tennessee, kentucky and georgia. in his new role, he is responsible for enhancing physician engagement and reducing unnecessary clinical variation in the company’s ongoing efforts to improve quality. chari, who reports to dr. jonathan b. perlin, president of hca’s clinical and physician services group and chief medical officer, has worked with physicians to identify opportunities to standardize evidence-based practices that reduced length of stay, for example, and resulted in better patient outcomes. “dr. chari is a physician leader who brings academic credibility, clinical and management skills, and a track record of success in engaging physicians in the ongoing improvement of patient care,” said perlin. “we are pleased he is joining us in this new role to help advance hca’s agenda for high quality, high performance healthcare.” chari joined hca in 2008 as chief medical officer at centennial medical center in nashville. from october 2009 to march 2010, he also served as interim administrator/chief operating officer of the sarah cannon cancer centers for hca’s tristar division. he became chief medical officer of tristar in december 2010. prior to coming to hca, chari was professor of surgery and chief of the division of transplantation at vanderbilt university medical center. originally from edmonton, alberta, chari graduated from the university of saskatchewan college of medicine in 1989 and completed his surgical residency at duke university. he entered fellowship training at the university of toronto in hepatobiliary surgery and abdominal organ transplantation. in 2008, chari received his mba degree from the owen graduate school of management at vanderbilt university. hca was founded in nashville, tenn. in 1968 when dr. thomas f. frist, jr., his father dr. thomas f. frist, sr., and entrepreneur jack massey set out to provide communities with better quality healthcare. today, hca is a leading provider of healthcare services, and its 190,000 employees serve approximately 18 million patients each year. the company has developed nationally recognized patient safety initiatives to prevent healthcare-associated infections like mrsa, perinatal safety programs to help protect the health of mothers and babies and bar-code systems to enhance medication safety. all references to “company” and “hca” as used through this release refer to hca holdings, inc. and its affiliates.
