Mita-teknik and amsc partner to supply a new, low-cost lvrt retrofit solutions for china’s wind turbines

Boston--(business wire)--mita-teknik, a leading supplier of wind turbine control system solutions, and amsc, a global solutions provider for wind and grid industry leaders, today announced the introduction of new lvrt retrofit solutions, which were developed specifically to allow existing wind turbines utilizing squirrel cage induction generators to meet china’s new low voltage ride-through (lvrt) standards. amsc’s wind-rt™ solution and mita-teknik’s mita lvrt solution can be installed inside individual wind turbines to substantially improve the ability of the turbines to survive power system faults and similar events that would have otherwise forced the turbines to trip offline in an uncontrolled manner. the introduction of these products to wind turbines installed in china will help improve the robustness of the chinese power grid and assist in avoiding the type of cascading outages that occurred in jiuquan, gansu province earlier this year. cascading outages and blackouts can occur if a large number of wind turbines trip offline suddenly in response to a dip in voltage caused by a disturbance in the power system. the state grid corporation of china has recently taken action to require existing wind turbines to become more robust in the presence of voltage dips to avoid such situations. wind turbine owners must bring their turbines into compliance with these new regulations or risk being denied permission to connect to the power grid. as a result, wind turbine owners are searching for a low cost but effective means to achieve compliance with the new regulations. “amsc has a decade of experience providing lvrt solutions for the global market, making them an ideal partner to provide our customers with an optimal solution to meet china’s new grid code requirements,” stated jesper anderson, ceo of mita-teknik. the wind-rt retrofit solution is well positioned to address this market. this is part of amsc's line of well proven and industry-leading power grid solutions that include the d-var® and dvar-rt™ systems, which together have improved the lvrt performance of over 5,000 mw of wind turbines worldwide. amsc has already provided lvrt solutions that have passed the china electric power research institute’s certification test as fully compliant with china's latest draft of its wind farm grid interconnection code. the wind-rt product has been optimized by amsc to enable wind turbines employing squirrel cage induction generators to meet these specific grid code requirements. mita-teknik and amsc are partnered on the development of the mita lvrt system, which optimally integrates with wind turbines featuring mita-teknik’s advanced turbine control platforms. mita-teknik’s wind turbine control systems are widely adopted in china and represent a substantial percentage of the turbines that require lvrt improvement. tim poor, executive vice-president of amsc agreed, stating, “amsc’s partnership and joint development with mita-teknik has allowed us to develop mita lvrt, a highly optimized and cost effective solution for exactly the type of wind turbines that require lvrt improvement in china. we believe that both the mita lvrt and wind-rt products are well positioned for rapid and successful adoption.” to ensure wind turbine owners/operators have the right solution to fit their needs, additional short-term reactive current injection upgrade is optionally available for both the wind-rt and mita lvrt products. mita-teknik and amsc will be showcasing the lvrt solution at the china windpower conference in beijing, october 19th – 21st. a prototype will be available for viewing and periodic presentations of the solution will be given by amsc’s director of facts products, michael ross, p.e., at the mita-teknik booth (hall e1, booth ea22). attendees are also welcomed to the amsc booth (hall e1, booth ec09-2) to see how amsc’s solutions can best meet their needs. about mita-teknik mita-teknik
