Paul's letter to the Colossians is a book that teaches us about the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. Writing to a young church facing pressure from the surrounding culture, Paul's chief aim to is to show that Jesus is not just a way to God—He is the way, and He is completely enough for everything we need in this life and the next. One way to think about the message of Colossians is this: following Jesus is a life lived against the flow. Imagine being in a lazy river at a water park. The current is designed to carry you in one direction. You're supposed to relax and just go with it. But if you try to turn around and walk the other way, you quickly realize how difficult it is. The current is working against you. People and their tubes are bumping into you. It is exhausting going against the flow. In many ways, that is what the Christian life is like. There are times when following Jesus feels difficult. There are moments when we're discouraged, mocked by the culture around us, and we're exhausted—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. If we're honest, there may even be times when we look at those who are simply going with the flow of the world and think, that looks easier than what I'm doing. This is exactly where the Colossians found themselves. This was a young church made up of first-generation believers. They could clearly remember what life was like before Christ. And now, as they followed Him, life felt harder. At the same time, voices around them were saying, "It doesn't have to be this way. You don't have to follow Jesus so closely. There are other options. There are easier paths." Do you know what it means to follow Jesus when everything around you is pulling you in another direction? Do you understand why Christ alone is enough, even when life feels more difficult because of your faith? Do you know how to respond when others suggest that Jesus is good but not necessary? Do you know why this message mattered so much to the Colossians and why it still matters for us today? If the answer is "no" to any, many, or all of these questions, then this study is for you. My hope is that as you move through this study—personally, in a group, or with your family—you will come to see more clearly that Jesus is not only worth following, but that He is fully sufficient. And as a result, you will become like the wise person that Jesus speaks of—one who knows God's Word and actively applies it in everyday life, even when it means going against the flow.
