It documents the deeds of their kings and the works of God’s prophets, prophets like Elijah and Elisha. The northern kingdom of Israel was led by an unbroken string of bad kings, kings who abandoned God’s ways and led the nation into moral decline. Idolatry and immorality overtook the people to such a degree that God eventually allowed the nation of Assyria to conquer Israel and take them away into a captivity that saw them dispersed throughout the vast Assyrian Empire. Judah’s destiny was also captivity, but their punishment was delayed by a few righteous kings who restored the nation to God during their reigns. Kings like Hezekiah and Josiah tried to rebuild generational loyalty in Judah, but ultimately the influence of evil consumed the throne and its subjects. The Book of Kings concludes with the Babylonians conquering Judah, destroying Jerusalem, and carrying its inhabitants away to Babylon for a God-ordained 70-year punishment.
