What does that mean? My sons Christopher and Jason were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) around ages nine and seven. They struggled with reading and understanding anything that was abstract or not definitively stated. They did not understand “hints” or common phrases such as “he got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.” Though Christopher always tried to participate in conversations, he often missed the point. Over the years, I noticed that Jason would always leave the dining room table early when we had guests and go off to be alone. I came to believe that he left because he did not understand the conversation. Although he was taught to ask questions for clarity, he would not around guests for fear of appearing stupid. So, with the inspiration of my God, whom I trust, I decided to write this book to help children and young adults understand everyday words and phrases that are simply understood by people who do not struggle with ASD. Although some words and phrases may be connected to a certain area of the country, most are known throughout America. The words and phrases are called: metaphors, euphemisms, and idioms. It is my hope that this book will guide readers in communicating better in everyday conversations. I hope that anyone suffering with ASD will be able to refer to this guide and stay in the conversation. They can even memorize many of the words and phrases and practice them appropriately when they speak. However, not all of the words and phrases in this book are compliments, so a person with ASD should be guided on what not to say as well as what is appropriate to say. I simply wrote what I know to be common language for some or many, but these sayings may not necessarily be appropriate to say to someone or about someone. I have always encouraged my sons to treat others as they desire to be treated. So again, let this book encourage you through frustrating times and help you stay in the conversation.
