Text Messages to My Children is a collection of essays originally written to the author’s children as actual text messages with the purpose of engaging his kids in their faith and perspective of the world as they begin to move out of the home into their own unfolding lives. The author discusses his Christian faith as he grapples with his own discomfort with modern day Evangelicalism. His intention is to share what he believes and why, aspiring to speak his experience with different words than the typical cliches; to suggest to his children another way to arrive at an authentic encounter with Jesus. He also shares his perspective of his past, desires for the future, all along with his current struggles. He is straightforward in his descriptions of where he has succeeded and failed. He shares his doubts, as well as his hopes. Most of the essays center around the father’s real time reflections on what he is studying in his Bible, modeling for his children how he works out his own faith against the backdrop of life with all of its complexities. Rather than directing them in how he thinks they should believe, he chooses instead to honestly reveal his own heart as he pursues spiritual truth in his own beliefs. He offers his children a travelling companion rather than a how-to guide. He does not speak to them like children, but rather like fellow travelers on life’s journey, as the adults they are becoming. Consequently, this is not a children’s devotional, but a thought-provoking series of reflections on life and faith that are relevant to all ages.
