As LAPD Detective Jessie Drake probes the killing of plastic surgeon Ronald Bushnell and two of his staff, all found shot to death in the doctor's office, she discovers that the murders are anything but random and that there is a long list of suspects and motives at work. By the author of Dead Air. 20,000 first printing. LAPD detective Jessica Drake (Dead Air) investigates the murder of a plastic surgeon and two of his staff. Suspects include the surgeon's former lover, his own daughter and foster son, his disillusioned wife, and the foster son's real father. An interesting puzzler. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc. West L.A. detective Jessie Drake is back, this time to investigate the execution-style murder of a prominent plastic surgeon, Ronald Bushnell. Bloody sneaker prints found at the scene implicate both the victim's wife and teenage daughter, Adrienne. His foster son, Ethan Meissner, is also a suspect, thanks to his affair with Adrienne and his angry poetry ("Kill 'em all, and watch them fall"). Meanwhile, Jessie has to play detective in her own family. Upscale, uptight Mother, who disapproves of Jessie's job and her newfound commitment to Judaism, thinks Dad is having an affair and leaves it to Jessie to find out. In the end, both puzzles are solved, but not without a lot of missteps, some clever twists, and a bang-up conclusion that pushes Jessie to the limit. Drake's appeal is in her authenticity: she's smart but not too smart, vulnerable but not an easy target. In all, she's a refreshing change for readers who want a break from Sara Paretsky's hard-driving V. I. Warshawski and Sue Grafton's unsentimental Kinsey Millhone.
